Checks had a bad pain day yesterday. Gave bupe in morning and before bed. Slept on my bed.
today, he ate breffis, then went directly to couch. He was having trouble getting comfortabe. I put the warm rice sock behind his back, but after about 5 minutes, he cried out, so I removed it.
He couldn't get his feet under him to stand up. That has been happening more and more lately. I was able to lure him off couch to see if he could stand or walk. Touching/lifting him, brings an angry response.
He was walking on his back tippy toes, like he couldn't put the foot down properly.

He goes to vet in two hours. He's hiding now, he knows something's up.

I'm so scared, i can barely move......Im scared i won't bring him home. I've never been able to get a real answer about why he keep losing weight, except he's old (16) and diabetic. he has no meat on his hips and thighs.

There's no cure for the bad disk in his back. Surgery's not an option. Arthritis medication is not appropriate for his condition. Doc and I have discussed meds several times.
We talked last time about Adequan, but i dont remember why he didn't want to put Checks on it.
Today i see a different doc. I'll get a differedt opinion .
I'm so scared there isn't anything to give relief, when I dont' even know for sure when he IS in pain until it gets too bad.

Bupe is an opiate, he cant have it on a daily basis..CAN HE??

Last week he felt so good after acupuncture....this time I swear he's worse.

I'm sorry im rambling...I'm so scared. I can't have him in pain....i cant lose him....

If you have any extra prayers, could you send them our way, please

Re: 4/21 Checkers amps 303. vet today. need prayers

Barb, With arthritis , many cats on the board successfully use Adequan..I have been using it like an ace in the hole for when Moonie will need it-My vet had offered it to us & I said I'd wait. Moonie has arthritis
I think Checks might do very well on it, but I hope your vet will help you out--They can give the shot in the office...Just check out any side effects ..
Praying for a positive vet visit for Checkers...Arthritis is surely affected by humidity & atmospheric pressure- Dont I know it! Hope he will be better-Comfort Hugs & Love from us--Paws & fingers crossed!

Re: 4/21 Checkers amps 303. vet today. need prayers

Barb - I am sorry, and I feel your anguish. I will be thinking of you and Checkers today. I hope that you guys will be able to come up with a pain management plan that will work well for checkers. Paws crossed. Mannie and I send tons of prayers and healing vines for your guy, and you.

Please update when you can. Hugs to all.

Re: 4/21 Checkers amps 303. vet today. need prayers

I don't see any reason that he can't have bupe on a daily basis for pain. For humans with chronic pain if other options are inappropriate or don't work, then a narcotic is used. The thing you need to get your head around is that the narcotic isn't being used as a recreational drug. It's being used to manage a chronic, medical condition. Give Checkers what he needs to maintain a good quality of life.

Re: 4/21 Checkers amps 303. vet today. need prayers

Oh barb .. I can just read the fear in your words .. I don't have any advice myself, but Roni and Sienne both seem to think adequan and bupe are options for poor checks .. :YMHUG: :YMHUG: I really really hope the vet can help you make checks more comfortable .. I'm sending all my prayers your way ...

Re: 4/21 Checkers amps 303. vet today. need prayers

Barb, sending vines and prayers for Checkers and you. I'm not positive but I believe Marge gives some Bupe to Gus on a regular basis. I may be wrong but you could pm her. Lots of hugs and hoping for some positive news.

Re: 4/21 Checkers amps 303. vet today. need prayers

(((((Barb & Checkers))))),
We are sending the strongest no-pain vines to Checks today, and praying that he will get relief with the pain medications. Barb, I know how frightened you must be and I hope that the new vet will have some answers for you. KTSS will be dropping by later with some good chicken soup and a spa massage for your boy.

Thinking positively and sending you lots and lots of hugs :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

Re: 4/21 Checkers amps 303. vet today. need prayers

(((Barb))) I gave Bupe to Emily for arthritis long term. You can give it in a low dose which doesn't make the cat too zonked, but which keeps the pain down. She also took Adequan. Will you be getting blood work done as well?

Barb, I am sorry you're scared and I feel for you. Know that we are here supporting you, and you can ramble to us all you want. Prayers are coming from us, for the new vet to offer better help for Checkers arthristis. J.D. is on Adequan for his arthritis, and he gets a small dose of bupe daily for his pancreatitis.
We'll be thinking good thoughts for Checkers and you at the vet visit.

Re: 4/21 Checkers amps 303. vet today. need prayers

Just reading this now and feel so bad for you! hugs from our side of the continent and healing vines from Rupert to his besty pal Checkers.

I know we use adequan on the horses and I've seen AMAZING results with it, with no side effects at all. (of course, different animal all together). Wilf has arthritis in his hocks and he would get an adequan shot once a day... after we started on him it was like he was totally normal again. We stopped using it after we quit competing with him, because now he just gets to mess about and trail ride once in a blue moon so no serious stress, but I"m sure the adequan really helped slow the whole arthritic process down. Hopefully new vet has some ideas. I wonder if Checks WAS feeling really great after the first accupunture and maybe overdid things a bit - just like we do as humans.. soon as something is on the mend we tend to get impatient and just go at it again making things feel sore! I'm hoping that maybe the adequan or the painkiller will really help Checks. After all, a healthy joint is a mobile joint, and maybe he just got 'too' mobile too soon and it's taking a bit of time for his muscles to get used to moving around again?

{{{{hugs}}}} to you and Checkers, we'll be looking for a good vetty report later on today!

Re: 4/21 Checkers amps 303. vet today. need prayers

Barb sending healing vines you way, and hope the Vet can help.

Daphne has a little arthritis and I gave her Cosequin, but I think it made her BG worse.
I had a 20lb Maine Coon, who had very bad tendonitis in her front paws, so we had to keep her from jumping on and off things. When it got bad, we would pull her around in a basket, she wasn't in a lot of pain when she wasn't walking a lot, and she was till able to get to her litter box and move around a little. Our Vet never offered pain killers, I wish he did because I would have used them, I never knew cats could even have them.

Hugs for you and Checkers

Sending no-pain vines and lots of healing white light for Checkers. I hope the new vet is willing to give you Adequan for him. Keeping you and Checks in our thoughts today.

Re: 4/21 Checkers amps 303 +6/252

Thank you everybody for the support. It means the world to me.
I need to clarify something first. Checkers doesn't have arthritis. He has a degenerative disk. I have a copy of the x-ray, and can see it's bone rubbing bone.
I called it arthritis for simplicity when talking about his pain.
The meds for arthritis won't do any good for him. He needs med for pain only. I am however going to give Dasuquin for joint hydration/lubrication...just in case it helps.
Doc recommended it.

Because his pain waxes and wanes, we came up with a plan that I'm happy with.

He will have bupe long term but not constantly. He will get 0.1ml bid, for 3 days, then drop back to .05 bid., for 3 days, for as long as the 'flareups' last.
Dasuquin every day.
I am comfortable with this, because it's how I dose myself. I might need Lortab 2-3 times a day, for several days, then need no medication at all, for several days. I have sort of the same thing Checks does.

He's feeling good right now (on bupe), walking around talking to himself, complaining 'cause he's locked out of the bathroom.

I hope this plan will help to keep his bg down.

Re: 4/21 Checkers amps 303 +6/252

That's good news Barb! As long as there is a plan in place & Checkers not in pain, it's terrific! Hope he gets some energy & starts eating! We all know how those pain med spoil our appetite.
Relax a bit & take some rest, it's quite a day for the both of you!

Re: 4/21 Checkers amps 303 +6/252

I'm glad you have a plan, and wish you all the luck that it works well.

:YMHUG: More Hugs

Re: 4/21 Checkers amps 303 +6/252

yay! I'm glad there's a plan in place that you feel good about .. Everyone here just wants the best for "himself" :-D

Re: 4/21 Checkers amps 303 +6/252

Hi Barb,
I am so glad he is ok and you came up with a plan you feel optimistic about.

The first time Latte experienced an episode of not being able to walk, x-rays showed a similar thing to Checkers. Not sure why I am just remembering this. I guess I have a selective memory at times. Some things I choose to forget. Your description of Checkers this a.m. was very similar to ours. And yes, it is very VERY scary. I am so glad you got him to the vet right away. It sounds like he is feeling a little better already?

We did a low dose of bupe when I thought Latte was in pain, which was pretty much everyday. I hope that helps Checkers. And, if the acupuncture helps, even for short bits of time I would continue with it. Wouldn't it be great if those animal acupuncturist would do house calls so we didnt have to drag them out every week?!?!

:YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG:
I hope you are able to find some rest and peace of mind today, along with some nice Checker snuggles. cat_pet_icon

Re: 4/21 Checkers amps 303 +6/252

The plan sounds good and you can breathe now. More feel better vines and maybe Ktss can spike his chicken soup w/ a llittle bupe from now on!

Re: 4/21 Checkers pmps 295

Glad you have a plan for Checkers! I have degenerative disc issues too! NO disc left at L5/S1 so I can totally sympathize. Some days no problem, other days quite owly. Often depends how badly Harvey has behaved - yes, horse riding perhaps not the best sport to choose with a bad back but I find if I don't ride it's almost worse! keeping moving helps in my case. Sounds like you have things under control. Hope Checkers is feeling up to playing with Rupert soon and they can get down to some serious business in some more masculine colours. These pinks and reds are just far too girly for them!

Hope you are doing okay and that you are getting some rest as well.

Re: 4/21 Checkers pmps 295

Hi Barb,
The report on the vet visit sounds very encouraging. We are sending good-plan vines so that the new plan will work for Checkers. KTSS will be along shortly.
Try to get some good, relaxing time this evening with your boy.

Hugs,

Ella & Rusty

Re: 4/21 Checkers pmps 295

hi Barb - I so glad you came up with a plan that you are comfortable with. YAY! Things sound better! Have a great evening Barb - Mannie and he troops are getting the KTSS ready to pay Checks a visit.

that sounds like a great plan. if you find the .1ml isn't doing enough, you might ask about a larger dose. we gave punkin .2ml and i think he tolerated it just fine.

Hi Barb - I'm so glad you have a plan that you are comfy with, and that Checks is feeling better tonight. I hope you guys enjoy your evening :YMHUG: !!
