I wasn’t comfortable with an increase this morning because I have had an emergency to deal with (not Max). I’m not sure when I will increase him but it will have to be when I can monitor him the way I’m comfortable with.

I won’t give any details right now but I will ask that if you are a believer who prays, please keep me in your prayers. Thanks so much.
 
@Wendy&Neko I missed the phone call from my vet today but she just sent me this text message. Please tell me if you have any opinions about this. She has not sent me the lab values yet. I will call when they open tomorrow and ask for them. I was really needing some good news today, but anyway I wanted to see what you thought of the diet she recommended. We’ve got kidneys and pancreas to consider as well as his IBD. Thank you.

“Overall, labs look good. Kidney values are normal but his Renal Index was positive which can be a very early indicator of kidney disease. I suggest transitioning Max to a low protein/renal diet to ease stress on his kidneys. His glucose was 288 & he had glucose in his urine. I know you monitor this very closely. His thyroid level was normal. His amylase & pancreatic specific lipase were a little elevated. He may have some degree of inflammation in his pancreas. If you are not seeing any gi signs, I don't think we need to do any thing. The Michigan State test is pending. Have a good evening. Pls call if you want to discuss more.

Not sure I like that suggestion about a low protein diet for a diabetic cat though? I do realize you were directing your question to @Wendy&Neko , however I think @tiffmaxee has some experience with the kidney disease issue as well, I am hoping both will chime in soon. Will wait to see his labs as well. Hang in there Lori, you will be in my prayers!:bighug::bighug:
 
That suggestion is old school. The current thought is to not move to low protein until stage 3-4. It would be good to find a lower phosphorus food though. We need to see all the labs first. If very early ckd I would not switch to a low protein diet. Will the labs be emailed to you? When you get them add them to the labs tab on your spreadsheet and let us know. :bighug:

Thank you Ruth. I need the prayers! The news about Max sure didn’t help today either. I didn’t know that @tiffmaxee had experience with kidney disease, but by all means I welcome her advice or opinions too! I just tagged Wendy but anyone who has any ideas is certainly welcome to help me with more info. I didn’t think the low protein was a good idea either for Max. Thank you again!

Thanks Elise. I will call tomorrow and ask them to email them to me so I should get them tomorrow and I will post in his lab section and let you know. Thanks so much.
 
As others have said, let's see the labs first before jumping to conclusions. Even when Neko got to stage 3 her IM vet was fine with her sticking with her regular diet. And to quote from my go to site on reading blood work "Elevated blood amylase levels are of little significance in cats. " A different story in dogs.

Thanks Wendy. I will try not to worry right now. As soon as they send me the labs I will put them on his SS and let you know.
 
After a 3 oz can of 21% carb he is 85. I thought that might bring him up a lot. I'm leaving food out for him tonight. I cannot monitor.

I would like to see the labs. I have lot (unfortunately) of experience with kidney disease. I am in agreement with what Elise said. That’s correct. Dr. Lisa Pierson on her catinfo.org site also has a lot to say about it as well and she does not recommend the renal diets. Lowering phosphorus will reduce workload on the kidneys as you know. You already do a lot of home made food with EZ complete and that is low phosphorus.

Thanks so much Suzanne. Hopefully I can get his labs from the vet today. I’m so fortunate to have all of you here for your experiences.
