Hello all, got the urinalysis back from the vet, and UTI is confirmed, also said that there was high traces of sugar in his urine as well. :(
I got the pill form today, because he has puked up the liquid twice and puud on the couch again. Luckily for both of us, I approached him with the confidence that the pill was going down! So he took the pill and it was quick & easy, but is a twice a day venture. He is hiding under the bed now, and I'm going to let him be because I can tell that he does not feel well today. My vet did not want to prescribe anything for the pain because of his diabetes(?)... I hope the AB's kick in quick enough to bring my friend down off the pain-mobile, when he hurts, my heart breaks!

What kind of ABs did you get?
I'm just asking because J.D. was on Orbax liquid and when his vet said he could have pills instead, she gave us Baytril.

Antibiotics will kill both the bad bacteria and the good bacteria, so you may want to give him some probiotics too to put some of the good bacteria back in. I think tummy problems are caused because there isn't enough good bacteria when on ABs. I may be wrong about that, so anyone correct me if I am.

I am sending UTI be gone soon vines to Tyler.

On the bright side, infection is the easiest to deal w/ for UTIs and if he is taking the pills well it should clear up soon. Inflammation from crystals or blockage is much harder to deal with. Behavior peeing can make you tear your hair out too.

My vet did not want to prescribe anything for the pain because of his diabetes(?)..

I've never heard of that, our vet always prescribes Bupe for pain when Tess gets a UTI. Pain can increase BG. When I give the pain meds she starts to feel better right away and stops peeing all over. We usually only have to give them for a day and by then the Abs have taken over. And if you look at her SS for the last few days when I have given her Bupe her numbers have come down.

Oops, I forgot to mention, that the pills are Baytril (22.7mg/each) 2x's daily.

Huh. As far as I know Baytril is usually prescribed as once a day. Too much can cause problems with vision. That's what I was afraid of. Baytril - Safety and Toxicology It has therefore been recommended to treat cats with Baytril at daily doses not exceeding 5 mg/kg b.w., which is the officially registered dose in most countries of the world. Are you sure it says twice a day on the bottle?
J.D. is 11 lbs so 5 kg, so 5x5=25mg. You might be giving 45.4mg per day if you're giving 22.7mg twice a day.
It's just a concern of mine. I hope it works well for Tyler.

my understanding about Baytril's dosing and side effects is the same as Dyana's. Blindness is a side effect of too high of a dose of Baytril, so i would just give once a day until you can confirm with your vet.

you can wrap pills in pill pockets and then they don't stick to your finger when you're shoving the pills down his throat. the Dog version of duck and pea pill pockets are safe for diabetics. there used to be a cat duck and pea, but it went off the market. the others all have sugar in them. You can get pill pockets at pretty much all pet stores or online. just make sure which version you get.

i'm sorry the poor guy's got a UTI. Punkin used to get them every year before he was diabetic and i know he never had pain meds at the time. Once he was diabetic he never had one again. Go figure. but i'm glad! probably was because i switched him to canned food and added water to his food.

Poor baby Tyler!

But at least it's something that can be treated and hopefully he'll feel better soon, and both the peeing all over the place and his blood sugars will come down!

Because they have the extra sugar in their urine, our kitties are more prone to UTI's...Sugar is an excellent breeding ground for bacteria :sad:

Hopefully once this clears up, we'll be able to get him better controlled and that'll reduce the sugar in his urine too!

With any antibiotic, it's important to also give a probiotic to put the "good bacteria" back into the gut. The one a lot of us use is FortiFlora which can just be sprinkled on his food, but you can use others (I know Fortiflora is a little high for my budget too so I got some probiotics from WalMart)

Hope Tyler feels better soon and will once again be your bestest buddy! (and not acting like he doesn't feel good)
 
Wow. I hate that doubt is being planted in my mind about my vet. He's been a vet for 35 years! I will read the link posted in here and call my mother's vet on Monday. I don't know what to think!
 
I can't believe they didn't prescribe Tyler anything for his pain. I've never heard that you cannot give a diabetic cat pain medicine. It always boils my blood when humans, especially vets, believe that animals can't feel pain. Buprenor can be prescribed and made at a compounding pharmacy with no sugar added. That WOULD work for a diabetic cat.
 
I'm also sorry Tyler has a UTI.

There are a couple things here that concern me. One is that is seems like you took in a free catch sample. In order to determine if it is really a UTI, it has to be a sterile sample the vet takes by doing cystocentesis. A free catch allows too many opportunities for the bacteria to originate elsewhere than in the cat.

Normally, an a/b like clavamox, orbax, etc is used for a UTI. Baytril, because of the potential side effects, is typically used, as others said, once a day at about 22.5 mg. Baytril is usually used for kidney infections.
 
Was a culture done? If so it should list antibiotics that are not resistant to the infection. Tiffany got lots of UTI infections and was never given pain meds for them. One vet gave me Baytril for another cat because she was hard to pill and it only needed to be given once a day. I also agree about probiotics to avoid GI issues when taking any antibiotic. I hope you get this cleared up quickly and get in touch with your vet tomorrow. You could also call an ER to ask about dosage.
 
Elise, just because the vet did not prescribe pain meds doesn't mean Tiffany was never in any pain from a UTI. Have you ever had one? OMG. I used to get them ALL-OF-THE-TIME.. Of course for humans there is some other type of pain med that we take to relax those muscles used to pee.. haha.. My male cat had a UTI and I asked the vet for those pain meds to help relax his bladder, and I gave them to my Digger.
