How long does Lantus last?? Does it start to lose its potency after so many months??

Tank's SS 6 yrs old, M, Orange Tabby, Diagnosed - April 2016 with Diabetes, Lantus, AlphaTrak II Meter, DKA 04/2016, Kidney Gold Support, Mercola Probiotics, ALOH, Cosequin, Stage 2 CKD, Merrick Limited Duck, Chicken, Wellness Turkey & Turkey and Duck

I believe a pen lasts about 6mo if kept in the fridge. I never have to worry about that, get about 15 days before it's done

My vet still prescribes Tank a vial. Are the pens expensive?? I pay $275.00 per vial but I feel like it loses its potency after 3 months even in the fridge.
