It was definitely a Monday.

Well, today was SUPPOSED to be Donovan's dental :?. Restricting food for him and the others overnight was as you can imagine not particularly pleasant, but at least there was no kibble explosion as has been known to occur in the past. I gathered Donny up and tried to stuff him into a carrier. Yeah right. I hadn't dug the large one out of storage, so figured I'd just use a small one (it's only a few miles to the vet). Not happening. I ended up squeezing him in Butthead's small soft carrier since I could shove him in butt first and deal with the No I Don't Wanna Legs In All Four Directions problem. I get there and check in, and sign papers for the procedure. I notice it has him listed as FIVE YEARS OLD. Not a good sign of things to come. I mention it, they scratch it out to say FIFTEEN, and tell Donny to be a good boy as the technician carries him off. I also reminded them to do bloodwork/senior panel while he's under. This is about 8:30 am, and they say to call and check on him around 1 pm.

I get a call around that time. They did not do the dental since he's 15 years old and the vet wants to wait for the bloodwork results to come back before proceeding. Now, I don't know who dropped the ball here. I made the appt weeks ago -- did they not know he was 15 *then* and realize that he should have bloodwork ahead of time? Did they have to wait, what, FIVE HOURS, while poor hungry Donny sat there alone, to figure this out? To his credit, I am glad the vet was cautious, but I'm irritated at how it was handled. Somewhere along the line the assistants screwed up. I am happy to report that while my big sweet Donovan is easily upset and frightened, he was VERY happy to be home and did not seem to hold a grudge. He did not run and hide, he had his fuds, and he slept and purred the rest of the afternoon away. But he really stinks of VET, blech.

The vet also called me back later tonight to verify Donovan's info (is he still off insulin; how's his BG; what is his diet; etc. - guess he was going over that day's patient's notes), and he'll contact me as soon as the bloodwork is back. So I do believe the vet is dedicated and cares about his patients, but some of his help is, shall we say, not up to par. As a one-man operation, he needs better assistance.

Butthead is holding his own. He goes for a re-check at Angell in Boston on Wednesday. His steroid med ran out a couple of days ago, and I only gave him a few doses of the flagyl for his diarrhea before stopping it. That stuff was so nasty - he hated it. No runs in the house at the moment, knock wood. Took Butthead outside for some fresh air today, and he seemed to enjoy it as always. He has definitely lost weight in spite of nibbling all the time, and is not as active, and still wanders around like he's restless, but he's happy, purring, eating, sleeping, etc. I think I feel more lumps but to be honest it's such a jumbled conglomeration of "stuff" that I just don't know. Even so, what more can I do about it? Don't want to think about it. Until I absolutely need to, I won't. Or at least try not to.

A million thanks for your emotional support through Butthead's most unfortunate journey.

omg... and poor Donny! I'm not too sure how well I would have handled it. Kudos to you for not loosing your cool. It's just s shame that he had to stay there all that time before they called you. Donny's a good boy - no grudges, life is good. I did get a chuckle out of the attempted carrier. Been there too. I hope the next dental go around is better.

I am glad that Butthead is holding his own. Doing Butthead things. How nice that he could go outside and that he still enjoys it. One needs to appreciate each day as they come, take care of him as best you can. I hope his follow-up appt goes well. Paws crossed.

MJ, Maybe the doc's office screwed up with the info but once they did realize Donovan's age I'm glad that they proceeded in the manner that they did. You don't want him being put under anesthesia if, GOD FORBID, there is a reason he shouldn't be. Anesthesia claims so many animal's lives when there was some unknown reason why they shouldn't be having it. a few bad teeth or not, Alex will never have a dental with his HCM although some would disagree. This is the choice I have made with my vet. My Jackson is a bad candidate too and he had a cyst on his side that bothers him very much at times. I'm still trying to figure that one out

Poor Butthead. My heart aches for the little guy. And for you. It's terrible to watch and feel helpless when they are sick. How are you giving him the flagyl? It IS nasty. I had to take it last time I was sick so I can sympathize. Alex is on it a lot. I cut it into quarters and wet his mouth first. I stand above him so that he's looking up at me and distract him with silly talk and just open his mouth real wide and pop it down followed by a syringe of water. If he makes nasty face I give him a piece of cheese. I don't let him...or try not to let him taste it because it's so bitter that the few times he has he starts foaming at the mouth.

Scritch and hug BH for me. I hope that what you felt are not new lumps, MJ. I really do ((((MJ)))

Hi there,
Unfortunate on the dental visit. I hate mistakes, but at least you caught it in time! And, I wish things could be different for Butthead. One day at a time, right?
He is such a sweetie!

I got the flagyl in liquid form. Pilling Butthead just doesn't work - I ended up using pill pockets for his chemo meds. I tried mixing the flagyl with baby food, but he refused to eat it, so I squirted it in his mouth, and once he realized how nasty it was, he fought harder each time. He was on an antibiotic months ago that was also bitter, but he would eat it in baby food. Flagyl must be exceptionally offensive.

I too am glad the vet wanted to check Donovan's bloodwork before his dental; I wouldn't be able to live with myself if anything had happened to him. The sequence of events was just unfortunate, and since his BGs have been quite nice lately, the dental probably isn't urgent now, so I'm gonna let him take time and get over it before trying again.

Hi Miss ((((MJ, Donny and Butthead))))

Thinking of you guys, and keeping you in my thoughts and prayers. Four legs going in different directions    , to funny we have that problem here too.

(((((MJ)))))) ((((((Donovan))))) (((((Butthead)))))

I'm sorry the vets office messed up - better safe than sorry. Nice catch btw.

I don't know what to say about Butthead. Every day you have with him is a beautiful gift. I wish miracles were not so few and far between. Wishing you positive news at his follow up. Keeping you and Butthead close to my heart.

Hi MJ,
Good you caught the mistake at the vet's. Also good that you've decided to wait a while before rescheduling the dental. Donovan doesn't need all that trauma so soon again. KTSS will be along later today with the spa treatment for vetty smell!
I hope that Butthead's visit to Angell on Wednesday will go well. That beautiful guy deserves a hopeful report. We are thinking positively.

Hang in there. As you say: one day at a time,

Ella & Rusty

sounds like a frustrating day for sure but hope your vets gets everything straightened out and he can get his dental soon and ((((hugs)))) for Butthead

Donny!! i never dreamed you would be a handful like Little Miss Annie Fannie!!

she tore apart 2 carriers before sitting quietly on my lap for the rest of the trip.

what a frustrating day for you....but the report on Butthead seems hopeful.

always keeping you and your babies in our thoughts, prayers, and heart, MJ...
