Yesteday's Update

Atlas and I are home from the Westlake Animal Clinic. Atlas got his Subq's today from Dr. N and he only did 150mls. Atlas is now on all oral medications. We have Zeniquin, Cyproheptadine, and Cernia along with the Bupe & Tamiflu. I also have the impression that this was the last of the Subq's. We are to go for follow-up tomorrow at 3pm, instead of an early morning trip. Dr. N says we have just a few (2-3 more days) to go and Atlas should be in the clear and all we're doing now is getting him back up on his paws with food and slowly withdrawing the immune system support.

ouch on the high numbers! are any of those meds in syrup that might have sugar in them?

great report - sounds like the little guy's finally recovering. hugs to both of you, beth.

Beth - don't slap me. I'm supersensitive today LOL. Gave a d*ck in a white car the finger today because he honked at me - he was being a d*ck but I rarely react. I also said some really bad words. I'm lucky my window was closed. The last time I swore at a car was about four years ago and within seconds of my outburst (pulling off a highway) I got a flat tire. Thankfully I made it home today.

Any time you give cypro - you really should be giving ondansetron. Cerenia is good for vomiting but not nausea. I speak from experience. I see food aversion on FAF and know its real and almost all of the cats that get it are given cypro or mirtz without giving an anti nausea medication. Someone today posted that their cat hasn't eaten on his own for 11 months. He realized its because he tried an appetite stimulant without addressing nausea.

If you can ask your vet for a script for ondansetron, I will pay for it. This is how strongly I feel about it. I think you have a big heart and Attie has a spot in my heart. I hear you can get it affordably at Costco and don't have to be a member. I can paypal you the money or send it to DCIN. It doesn't matter to me either way as Canadians don't get a charitable tax receipt. What ever you don't end up giving Attie - when he is back to being well and eating on his own, you can donate them to another inappetant kitty and pay it forward.

Glad to hear he is doing so wonderfully. Heart refill.

Hi Karrie...

No slaps ...I only have enough cerenia for 3 days. Attie should be over the vomiting phase at that point.

If he is still vomiting at that point it means our treatment plan failed and the virus is stll active. I have a feeling this is less about nausea. He is still getting fluid loss (minor), but if everything here clicks in the next few days we should be in awesome shape.

The cypro already has him eating canned foods and he wasn't doing that before. He was just grazing kibbles.

I will keep your offer in mind, but since we're treating a very unusual case and Attie's doctor has an excellent track record dealing with this in puppies/kittens...I'm not prepared to up and make changes for 3 days. In fact, the cypro is labeled as 1 tablet every 12 hours AS NEEDED.

I don't think Attie is exactly food adverse. He is quite eager to eat whether he hears the kibble in the bowl or crack of the can. He just isn't eating enough...and that has to do with him having ripped a whole new intestinal tract. Dear Dr. N wants him to eat, but he isn't getting too excited about him not eating enough right now. He keeps saying he wants the appetite to come back on it's own.

No, there's no syrup in those meds.

Attie has not shown an interest in his regular foods just yet. So he is eating a bit of kibble. Not enough to keep his weight steady, but enough to spike the BG. ohmygod_smile

Dr. N is watching closely and we anticipate to getting back to the grind of regulation by the end of the week.

He is trying to balance the fluids, meds, and the diabetes...

Ok - one more thing then since you are great about not slapping me.... get some feedback on the amount of cypro to give. Vets way overprescribe this. Most cats are on 1/8th of a pill a day. For some reason some vets prescribe a whole pill. So I'm sure others will give you some feedback on what they gave their cats. Just a heads up from FAF. I am so happy to read about his improvements. I know you are still guarded about his recovery. Hang in there.

I'm glad Attie is doing better and I am keeping those full and quick recovery vines coming.

I bought Ondansetron at my grocery store pharmacy for $33+ for 10 pills. I bought 30 of the same pills at Costco for $9.75. That's a difference of over $3.30 a pill and $0.33 a pill.

My cypro says take 1/4 tablet daily, but when I was giving the 1/4 tablet, J.D. was so wobblily. The bottle says "THIS MEDICATION MAY CAUSE BLURRED VISION", well I think that's why J.D. was seen almost tripping down the stairs.
I now, have given him 1/8 tablet and he doesn't seem to be so adversly affected. He is also on a low dose of bupe 0.05ml when needed, but the bupe alone doesn't seem to make him wobbely, so I blame it on the cypro, and J.D.'s already limited vision. Sorry for the spelling errors
