Yesterday's Condo

Hi there citizens of Lantus Land!

Today was one for the books, I suppose. After the urination on my new roommates bed and this morning's lack of Tyler sized urine clump, I got Tyler squeezed in at the vet's today for a checkup. He wasn't able to actually tell if he had a UTI without a sample, but he gave me a liquid antibiotic, and boy giving that dose was uber traumatic (for the both of us). I'm not good at giving pills so I thought a liquid would be better... my mistake! 2mL of that yucky stuff and Tyler was not pleased! He is going to have to man up and take it for the next 10 days! I skipped his +7 because he hid from me after the antibiotic administration. I should have done that first! And his PMPS was high, but I expected that, after today's drama!

What ab is it? If it's berry flavored, lots of cats can't take that - makes them froth at the mouth and freak out. 5 of my 8 can't take those flavors...but they LOVE bubblegum!

A lot of liquid antibiotics also contain SUGAR...or xylitol (which cats should NOT have)

You may need to go back and actually get pills, but what really needs to be done is to get that sample and have a culture done to see what bug (if any) you're fighting. I know your wallet isn't liking it much, but giving antibiotics without knowing for sure there's an infection (or not knowing if it's the RIGHT antibiotic) is what's causing so many of the "Super-bugs" these days that don't respond to anything.

A sterile sample should have been pulled so they could really check for a UTI. They can use a needle to get urine straight from the bladder to test.

I wouldn't worry too much about the numbers today...if Tyler is stressed out from the vet visit and the medication, that's enough to make his numbers go higher

I never used to be good at giving pills either. Then I discovered gel capsules. I put the pills in one, coat it with baby food and it goes down really easily. I then chase it with baby food which Max eats on his own. The gel caps hide the nasty flavor of the pills. You can buy them on line through thrivingpets.com or capsuline.com. The latter will send you some to try if you ask them. Get size 3. The smaller the number the larger the cap. I have never used larger than size 1. My cats would foam whenever I gave them liquids or if a pill had to be reinserted because they popped it out. With the gel cap, if Max manages to get it out because I don't get it in the right place, I can pop it back in without it getting mushy. A pill gun can help too.

You really need a urine and culture to make sure he gets the right antibiotic.

Sorry he isn't feeling well and hope it goes away quickly.
