I still think Jupiter is dehydrated so I added some water to his food last night and today. I also drained water out of a can of tuna last night and this morning and he slurped it up so fast! Going to try to find some tuna today without soy and vegetable broth. If anyone knows of any kinds/brands of tuna that does not contain soy and vegetable broth I would really appreciate the help!!

Todays numbers:
AMPS - 294
+2 - 284
+4 - 280
+6 - 293
+11 - 271
PMPS - 249
+2 - 212
+3 - 165

Re: 4/15 Jupiter AMPS/294 +2/284

Adding water to his meals will help with dehydration. Unfortunately, I don't feed tuna, nor do I buy it very often for us, so I'm not a big help with regards to your question. If/when I buy tuna, I normally buy the stuff that has water (I don't look at the label closer than that). Good luck!

Re: 4/15 Jupiter AMPS/294 +2/284

I hope adding the water to his food helps today. How much are you adding - are you measuring it out so you know how much he's getting? I'm not sure about the tuna either. I haven't looked at the label that closely. Find anything online?

Re: 4/15 Jupiter AMPS/294 +2/284

Boy, tuna water will do it every time, over here! Leo got a whole can of juice yesterday when I made tuna fish sandwiches. I can't believe how fast that bowl was lapped clean! We get the water packed too, so I can't say on the ingredients.

Re: 4/15 Jupiter AMPS/294 +2/284

I just checked a can of tuna in water that I had in the pantry and it too has soy and vegetable broth - BUT, it also said 0% carbs. Are you worried about the carbs? I know I remember reading about soy not being the best thing for feeding cats and grains aren't good either , but what about the veggies?

I also looked at some organic chicken broths online and some are soy free. I did notice however that they did use vegetables but again, the carb count was really low - 1g per 8oz. I do wonder about the salt content thought. I would think high salt isn't the best thing either - doesn't that make you retain water? Have you asked any of the experts if they know anything?

"I don't know what brand does not contain vegetable broth and soy. Those are the two things you want to avoid. The vegetable broth often has soy in it and soy can cause anemia in cats." This is from a message from Marje.

And this is a message I just sent to her.. "so far what Ive found - there are a few kinds/brands of tunas that do not contain soy and vegetable broth, but they are pretty expensive - cheapest seems to be $2.09 (if I can find that brand near where I live) but on average $3-$4 a can.

I have a fancy feast appetizer here "Tender Tongol Tuna Appetizer in a Delicate Broth" The ingredients on that are: Tongol Tuna, water, xanthan gum, guar gum, sodium nitrite (to maintain color).

Do you think the "juice" from this is better then the "juice" from the canned tuna?

I am just trying to make sure jupiter is not dehydrated - so thats why I drained the water from the can of tuna for him.. he sure did love it too - drank it all up so fast"

I am going to wait to see what Marje thinks about that. I would assume the FF appetizers are in fact better because they do not contain soy or vegetable broth.

So the main problem I see with this option is : the FF appetizers do not seem to have as much "juice" in them, and I really want to make sure he is getting enough fluids in him so he isnt dehydrated.

I would think that if there were other ingredients other than the water, it would be listed. But I really don't trust food labels here in the US. If you feel like it's ok, I would try draining it and then mixing it with a bit more water so it still retains the flavor, but he gets even more water. How are his LB habits? Is he peeing regularly?

Re: 4/15 Jupiter AMPS/294 +2/284

Idk.. Its hard to tell because 3 cats total are using the litter boxes and eating the food..

The canned tuna that I have here does list soy and vegetable broth as ingredients. Thats why I was trying to find a different kind of tuna that didnt have those ingredients.

Re: 4/15 Jupiter AMPS/294 +2/284 +6/293

High numbers for Jupiter all day =[

Whats up with these high numbers?!!? They need to stop coming back!!

Re: 4/15 Jupiter AMPS/294 +2/284 +6/293

Bounces can take up to 6 cycles to clear. One other thing, a flat yellow cycle (what you're seeing so far today) can indicate an active cycle coming up next, in some cats.

Re: 4/15 Jupiter PMPS/249 +2/212

The past few days Dane said he has seen considerably less pee in the litter boxes.

Today Dane said there was a lot of big puddles of pee in the boxes. Maybe I mixed in a little too much water (lol) - but I wanted to make sure he was getting enough fluids since I havent seen him drinking much water lately.

I will cut back just a little on the amount of water I mix with his food tomorrow - and try to determine from there how much water I should add to his food.

Starting to see some lower numbers here tonight.. And I am very worried about his numbers going low tonight. Jupiter tends to pick the worst nights for me for his numbers to go low. =[ But guess I will take good numbers whenever I can get them.

Re: 4/15 Jupiter PMPS/249 +2/212

I wouldn't worry about adding too much water. It's fine.

You want to avoid vegetable broth because one of those vegetables can be onions which are toxic for cats -- they also can cause anemia.

If you can find tuna (or bonito) flakes, you can put them in warm water and you'll have tuna water without any additives. I've found them in Asian markets or sometimes, even in a large grocery store.

Re: 4/15 Jupiter PMPS/249 +2/212

Yeah I found those tuna flakes at Petco, they are a little expensive. I mixed a FF chicken appetizer and half of a FF tender tongol tuna appetizer together and then added water to that and mixed it really well and Jupiter really seemed to like that today. So that may end up being the cheapest option for the days I dont feel like hes getting enough fluids.

I will probably feed them a bite or two of tuna tomorrow am until after Dane goes to the store - then after that I wont feed them anymore of that tuna- so no more soy for them

Re: 4/15 Jupiter PMPS/249 +2/212 +3/165 worried about drop

PMPS - 249
+2 - 212
+3 - 165

Worried about the decent size drop in his BG numbers today.

How often should I test? Like how soon should I test again? Should I still let him eat as he pleases since his numbers arent too low yet?

Re: 4/15 Jupiter PMPS/249 +2/212 +3/165 worried-need advice

I would test in an hour. It's fine to give him some LC to snack on.

You know how you were saying you didn't like those yellows? That flat yellow cycle can be a signal of an upcoming active cycle.

Hi Jamie

I'll be here to watch you and Jupiter tonight. I'm sorry it's another bad night for you. Could you p,ease test at +4 and we will see if he's still coming down at this rate? See you soon!

Re: 4/15 Jupiter PMPS/249 +2/212 +3/165 worried-need advice

Yes I will test at +4 and post that number. that is in about 20 mins

Re: 4/15 Jupiter PMPS/249 +2/212 +3/165 +4/163-need advice p

+4 was 163. He did eat since the last test though so I am not sure if this number is food influenced or not. I am not sure how much he ate - I was unable to get up to check - sorry.

Re: 4/15 Jupiter PMPS/249 +2/212 +3/165 +4/163-need advice p

When is a good safe time to test again? I am worried that if that number was food influenced - his numbers could possibly still be decreasing?

Thank you all

Re: 4/15 Jupiter PMPS/249 +2/212 +3/165 +4/163-need advice p

Jamie

Hold on for just a minute ...I want to catch up on his SS. I think he's done this to us before where he leveled out and then came down again. BRB.

Re: 4/15 Jupiter PMPS/249 +2/212 +3/165 +4/163-need advice p

What is easiest for you....a +4 or a +5? You are probably ok to put down some LC food and rest until +5 and then test but if its easier to do the +4, that works, too.

Re: 4/15 Jupiter PMPS/249 +2/212 +3/165 +4/163-need advice p

+4 was already done. He is not transitioned to LC completely yet. He will eat MC (pate mixed with a small amount of shreds) he will only occasionally eat the LC (sometimes he will eat the plain pate but mainly he only does this if its a seafood flavor). There is both some LC and MC left out at night although he probably wont eat the LC stuff. Dane put a decent bit of fresh food out a little while ago before he went to bed - along with some catsickles for tonight

Re: 4/15 Jupiter PMPS/249 +2/212 +3/165 +4/163-need advice p

I can test at +5 or +6 though - which time do you think is best to test at? (+5 is in about 30 mins from right now)

Re: 4/15 Jupiter PMPS/249 +2/212 +3/165 +4/163-need advice p

I'm sorry...duh. I'm helping two others as well tonight. I think the +6 is just fine if you can wake up or if Dane can test. Can you just leave down his normal MC food then please?

Thanks Jamie.

Re: 4/15 Jupiter PMPS/249 +2/212 +3/165 +4/163-need advice p

Dont thank me... Thank you!! I appreciate the help!!

Yep I am going to take a little nap and test at +6 will post his number here then. Thanks.

Re: 4/15 Jupiter PMPS/249 +2/212 +3/165 +4/163 +5/142 advice

Since I was still awake I got +5 and it is 142 so still decreasing a little bit

Re: 4/15 Jupiter PMPS/249 +2/212 +3/165 +4/163 +5/142 advice

Jupiter! I know you like to do this!

I was hoping a +6 would show an increase in the numbers so you could sleep. D you feel up to getting a +6?
