Good Afternoon to Everyone. I hope all is well with everyone and their babies !!

My boy appears to be doing all right except for the fact that he is ALWAYS hungry !!! I don't know how he will ever make out with the twice a day feedings which I have to start real soon. I've been cutting down on his 4:30 food, only by a 1/4 can. I give that to him at his 11:30 p.m feeding. Somehow I have to transition him to twice a day and I DON'T know how to do that with the way he is hungry all the time.
I will start to take his BG when he gets on the twice a day inj. for my own sanity sake. I don't like not taking them, but he is soooo afraid of me and I don't want to keep stressing him out !! God, this is HARD !!!!
He doesn't act like a sick cat at all, he acts the same as he always has. I guess he doesn't know he is sick !!!
It's only been three days since I cut his food back a little, but I would REALLY like to get him started on his twice a day inj. I think they will REALLY help him alot !! I ddn't know the Lantus worked for only 12 hours, so at night he wasn't gwtting any help at all. That's when his numbers went to the 400's.
What I REALLY would like is for him to get back to NORMAL !!!

Will someone tell me how to put these cute smiles on my posts ??

Thank you all !

Bowhuntress and Deb, there is a post for both of you on 4/12/13. Sorry, I just read them and answered them there.

I'm glad that you will soon be shooting twice a day, and I'm glad you plan to test before his shots. You're right, Lantus is new to you and Rags and it is safest if you know what is going on. That is a good decision.

About the feeding, I know your vet says twice a day, but honestly I don't think there would be any problem with spreading the food out into more meals. What if you fed two main meals, and then just a snack later on? Just save a little bit of his breakfast/dinner and give it a few hours later. That should make the kitties happier, and you would still almost be following the vet's instructions. Just a thought.

I usually feed my cats 4 times a day - breakfast, lunch, dinner, bedtime. I have done that even when I have had cats on insulin (Lantus or Levemir) and they have done well.

Perhaps you could ask your vet what her thinking was on only feeding Rags twice a day. Why did she think that was necessary?

Yes, he needs to have some food in him when he is getting insulin, but there is no reason I know of why he can only eat 2 times a day.

Wink was and still is, eating 4 times a day,

1. early breakfast with his shot,
2. second breakfast about 1-2 hours later,
3. early dinner with his shot and
4. late dinner before I went to bed.

He was on Lantus too.

This insulin is nothing like the old one you were using, the Novolin N, where you had to make sure he ate a good amount before the shot. Novolin hits hard and fast.

Lantus hits slower and more gently. Easier on his system.

Libby & Lucy, . My computer just erased what I was writting. Of course, the very first part. Rags made a liar out of me tonite, he only ate about 1/2 can at dinner. He will be eating at 9:30 p.m. (hopefully) I do give him very little of his so - called "diabetic " dry food. I STRESS a very little, cuase it has carbs too !!! As soon as I start testing him, I'll know more about what he can have extra a day, ya know ?? I really like this new insulin and can't wait to start the twice a day inj. I just have to get him away from 4:30 p.m. feeding and change to eight only.

Thank you for being there !!

Deb, she didn't understand why I was feeding him three times a day. I told her he was t.i.d. on his inj.
I'm starting to wonder how much she knows about this insulin since you said she didn't want to change it in the first place, ya know ?? That really blew my mind when you told me that !!!
She didn't seem to have a problem with it when we spoke about it.

I will be able to feed him a little more when he starts getting both inj. and I test him. She doesn't seem to want me to test only the 12 hour. I think it's cause I told her how stressed out he gets when I even come near him. I think she really would like me to do it, just thinks it stresses him too much.

I really like this insulin and think he could get reg. ALOT faster with it. I just can't figure out WHY these Vets use Novolin when they KNOW how it acts, and it would be much easier on the cat and his owner, ya know ?

By the way, I did receive the Miralax, but do not know how much to use. Also you said you were sending syringes, they were not there. FYI
I do need test strips, cotton, and food, are there any sites that could help me with those things ?? How about insulin ? I think I told you I had to borrow the money from my friend for that, but I can't keep doing that. I already owe her ALOT of money. I don't want to stop using this insulin, I feel more secure with this.

Thanks Again for being there for us !

Becki & Rag what ever happened to his avitar, I thought Carl said someone was putting it on for us. Do you know ?

You said "By the way, I did receive the Miralax, but do not know how much to use." Most cats get 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon with every meal.

Larry & Kittens, you have alot of kitties. I used th have thirteen in my house and must say, I REALLY miss them so VERY much ! They were ALL such GOOD kids !! I love and miss them soooo much ! (sorry already saqid that)
Thank you for repling about the Miralax. Why do they need it ?

Becki & Rags

Kitties can get constipated quickly. Hard poo is no fun so the little bit of Miralax mixed in with food can help if that is an issue.

Wink was getting 1/4 teaspoon twice a day but that was too much for him and gave him diarrhea. He now gets only 1/8 teaspoon twice a day and has normal softer poos.

I tried stopping the Miralax, but then his poo gets too hard and he is straining to use the litter box. The Miralax keep the poo softer and easier to pass. One of my little 7 pound kitties, Delta, only needs 1/16 teaspoon mixed into her food.

You do need to mix water in with the food with the Miralax because it works by drawing water from other parts of the body (osmotic). You do not want your cat to become dehydrated.

I hope both you and Rags do well with the Lantus. Have you printed out and started studying The Lantus sticky notes. They are very important to understand.
