yesterday's condo

Well a bit of crazy last night.. but nipped it in the butt early so I could get some sleep.. shot 15 mins earlier this morning... 45 mins down.. 1 hour 15 mins more to go by wed AM..

Have Monday PM, Tues AM, Tues PM, Wed AM left.. which is only 4 shot times left so not really sure how that's going to work.. and can't watch her Tues AM or Wed AM (obv).

Nova didn't want to get up early this morning.. I was trying for a bit more than 15 mins.. but she took a lot of convincing :).. she's in a decent mood.. not very opinionated but not really sad either... just sleepy :).

I've emailed the vet to make sure it's cool if I bring Nova along on Wed if I need to.. still hoping I can make it as far as the shot time shift goes.. need to have another cat to worry about that morning like I need a hole in the head..

Re: 4/12 - Nova - AMPS=90, +2=97, +3=77

Well.. I don't know what the heck yesterday AM cycle was.. but today seems to be back to super awesomeness!! So very happy!!!

Not much luck with the bird feeder yet :(.. it's still right around freezing temperature wise so not a ton of bird action outside other than seagulls.. my husband explained to me that putting a bird feeder close to where "predators" live.. most birds aren't stupid.. and it takes one of the dumb birds to stumble over here and see theirs great food..and then go tell all the smarter birds.. I don't know.. he dumped a bunch of bird food on the grass this weekend.. said the stupid birds might come sooner with that help..

Re: 4/12 - Nova - AMPS=90, +2=97, +3=77

Hah! That cracked me up Dawn. I had issues like that too when I first put my feeder out - it's the kind that suctions onto the window. The cat can see the bird, but the bird can't see the cat because of this mirror material stuff that's on it. The birds need time to "find" it - then I do think they tell each other like you said! My vet also said at first they need something to land on that's near the feeder because often they won't fly directly into it - they'd rather hop onto it from something nearby. Hmmm... Squirrels even go in the thing. I'm gonna dig up a picture so you can see what I mean...

Boomer sits on the arm of the couch and waits. This piggy squirrel has it's head down into the seeds! Sometimes raccoons come up and stand on their hind legs and eat the sunflower seeds. Mooches!

Oh that picture is awesome!!! Made me laugh.. pretty sure my cats would find a way to go through the glass if a squirrel was that close! :)

Re: 4/12 - Nova - AMPS=90, +2=97, +3=77

Nice looking day for Nova.

Are you kidding that you are exepecting birds in Edmonton already?
Not still a bit cold on that side of the country.?

I have no doubts that you will manage just fine with the vet visit although
I did think it was funny that you called and asked the vet if you could bring Nova too.
Almost like Jerry has a playdate and Nova is crashing the party.

Re: 4/12 - Nova - AMPS=90, +2=97, +3=77

Well there are a few song birds around here now when the weather is nice..but we had a bad storm.. so I haven't heard much chirping today..

As for taking Nova with.. believe it or not.. I actually used to ALWAYS take Nova with Jerry when Jerry was getting weekly ekgs.. He did a lot better stress wise with her there.. I normally wouldn't think twice of packing her up and bringing her along.. but for the ultrasound and xrays she can't be in the room..

I know I can just put her in a recovery kennel there and she'll be fine.. but she's a real talker.. has lots of opinions and when she wants attention nothing but "right now" will do.. and I don't know how her complaining will effect Jerry.. he's really protective of her. Where we have his heart doctor set up the portable ultrasound equipment is pretty far from recovery.. but the xray room is right next to it.. and I'm sure he'll hear her.

So it's a matter of whether or not there will be enough people around to have someone entertain Nova.. they already have extra people come in early to help with everything.. I doubt they've scheduled someone for "Nova entertainment".

Hi, Dawn & Nova! What a wonderful day for the two of you.. Beautiful #s!! O….. The joys of moving shot time around.. Good times, huh?
Wishing you both a great rest of the day!!

Re: 4/12 - Nova - AMPS=90, +2=97, +3=77, +5=88

Nova sounds very much like my BB. There's a reason BB's name is what it is. I'd tell you but then I'd get in trouble for using phowl language but the first word is Baby and the second one rhymes with ditch. Hubby named her. It suits though. It really, really does.

Is Nova offended by bodily noises beans make? BB is, very much so. It's terrible when someone in the house has allergies or the flu. *coughcough* "meh" *achooo* "Mehmeh" Bast forbid you pass air from either end. "mehmehMEH!" (imagine something between a duck and a baby lamb) I really should get video of her talking.

She also yells at her boy and his friends when they make offensive noises. Or if they put her out and close the door. She's very opinionated about how things should be in her universe and does not hesitate to share her opinions with anyone who is around.

I love that they comfort each other... mine don't do that. Not that I've ever noticed. Bella might, she's a little mama. I think she'd try if the others would allow it but Echo is probably the only one who would... maybe Tugger if he was really feeling awful just so he could have some company.

I hope everything goes well Wednesday, we'll keep you all three in our thoughts.

Re: 4/12 - Nova - AMPS=90, +2=97, +3=77, +5=88

That word that rhymes with .. that you mentioned.. that's one of Nova's nicknames.. even the staff at the vet has used it.. For the first while I started using it.. the vet staff used to be like "awww thats so mean to call her that".. then they got to know her really well :).

I love it though.. I really do.. she's wonderful. I worked so hard with her (and an animal behavourist) to get her to come out of her terrified shell when I got her.. I've never seen a cat so scared.. of everything.. (primarily of being hit.. people are awful :( ).. every time she fusses up a storm (so 8059023 times a day) I smile and think of how she was when I got her.. and celebrate our success :).

We should think of a code word for "that" word.. because every morning in her condo.. I want to post.. "she's her regular <word>y self".. and instead I say "opinionated" :).

She doesn't get mad at random noises.. it's not actually any outside stimulation that sets her off.. she just has lots of opinions..and the happier she is.. the more vocal she is about it.. except for Hitch.. Nova swears at Hitch all day long.. so much Hitch doesn't have ANY idea that hissing is anything more than Nova's name for him.. She's all talk though.. she loves Hitch.. (I've caught her mommying him when he's sick... she promptly denies it when she's caught by punching him in the head).. she likes to have him around for entertainment and tormenting.. she gets him to chase her and then makes fun him by running a tiny bit faster than he can (which isn't fast ;) ) or jumping up where he can't get to (which is almost everywhere) :)..

Re: 4/12 - Nova - AMPS=90, +2=97, +3=77, +5=88

What a lucky girl to have you =) I can't imagine hitting a cat! I'd bopped Boomer in the nose a few times for being pushy but that's a thump not a hit and it doesn't hurt and isn't out of anger and he's a huge dog. I've never actually had any experience with an abused cat, dogs yes, but cats, never. Boomer came to us with some issues that made me think he'd been hit at some point but he's come to trust that we won't ever do that to him so he doesn't flinch when we flail our hands around or carry stick-like objects anymore... how on earth do you ever gain a cat's trust though? Obviously with a lot of hard work and patience, but I'm interested to know a bit more if you ever feel like sharing (or can point me to somewhere you already have, I don't mind going back in time!)

Bella is a little shy of moving hands, sudden movements, things like that, but I don't think she's been abused just not socialized very well with beans. I've learned to get her attention before making a move for her, make sure she sees my hands and that they are being gentle and I talk to her a lot. I'm not sure what else to do, nearly all of my cats before her have come to me as kittens and been raised by me or have come to me as well socialized adults. Getting involved with rescue though, I'm coming to realize I should start learning how to help not so well socialized adults too. Bella has come to trust us more since she's been here (less than a year) but she's still a bit gun-shy. I think given more time she'll be just as easy going as the rest of them, except for treatment type stuff, I think that may always be a bit of a battle. ohmygod_smile BB is nearly the same way so I think it's a girl thing. My boys all just submit and let me do whatever. Tux makes it sound  like you're killing him but he doesn't fight, he just screams.

I think it's pretty awesome that you've come so far with Nova. She got the perfect new mamabean when she got you

Re: 4/12 - Nova - AMPS=90, +2=97, +3=77, +5=88

Nova was pretty over the top.. she wouldn't do ANYTHING without permission.. and she wouldn't ask either.. she wouldn't even meow. I lived in a 1 bedroom apartment at the time.. and it took almost an entire month before she explored it..

Well.. I talked quietly, moved slowly, and never approached her from "above" (that's a dominance thing for cats) .. I did an awful lot of just laying on the floor near her (but not in her personal space) and singing or talking to her softly.. I basically tried to make everything fun.. and was crazy over encouraging.. did my best to be ridiculously consistent.. even as far as day time routine routine stuff.. showers, teeth brushing, cooking meals.. so she would always know what to expect was next.. as we all know, cat's like routine.

A lot of working with her was addressing specific behaviours every single time and the exact same way.. one I think about a lot:
She never hid for extended periods of time unless she did something she thought was really bad.. like spill a little bit of water outside of her water bowl (she's a paw drinker, so it happens a fair bit).. then she would hide, cower and shake horribly for half an hour or more..

I would go over and splash the water all over and dump the water dish all over the ground and laugh (quietly).. play in the mess.. go fill it up, and do it again.. over and over until she eventually came out from her hiding spot and relaxed enough to check out all the fun.. If she knocked something over that was safe, I put it back where it was and knocked it over myself repeatedly.. if it was something that broke I would clean up the mess, and put something else where it was and knock it off repeatedly..

Whenever I mention playing bottle caps with Nova.. that's what that game is.. I put a bottle cap on something..she knocks it off.. I go pick it up and put it back..repeat.. usually for about 10 or 15 minutes :).. it's her favourite game.

The whole thing was basically a slow process of me being as consistent and predictable as I could.. overly encouraging even the most "normal" of behaviours if she initiated them herself (drinking water, meowing, getting out of her cat bed, etc).. tried to teach her that I was predictable, not aggressive (obviously :) ), calm, I was happy and proud of her when she was making her own decisions.. tried to give her self confidence, teach her that there was nothing she could do that would make me angry.. and that she was special and important to me.

She's the boss.. top cat.. even of me.. with the exception of when it's for her own safety or medical reasons. I put up with NOTHING when it comes to stuff at the vet (the staff is usually surprised how strict I am with her ha ha), taking medicine.. she NEVER wins.. but other than that.. she pretty much always gets her way and can do no wrong.

She is the opinionated drama queen I created, and I'm proud of how far her and I have come every single time she makes demands :).

Re: 4/12 - Nova - AMPS=90, +2=97, +3=77, +5=88, +8=113

Well carp, now you've gone and made me cry. You are awesome. I knew it. And you should be proud, that is a lot of work and she has come far!

BB is a paw drinker too :-D She likes glasses of water, so no one will drink from a water glass that has been left unattended. She dips her paws in the water bowl too, delicately dipping out her sips... or washing the litter off her paws, I'm not sure which now that they're on canned. No one seems to drink much but I'm always finding bits of litter in the bottom of the bowl *blech* so I dump and refill it as often as I did when they drained it 5 times a day.

I think I'd have no problem with most of that, but consistency is not my strong suit. I do very few things the same way every time or at the same time of day. Even my morning routine varies. Some days I make coffee immediately, some days it takes me a half hour to be functional enough. Some days I wake up and have to test/feed/shoot first thing, other days it's an hour or two after I get up. It would be torture for me to be that consistent I think. This is partly why I never joined the military myself

Re: 4/12 - Nova - AMPS=90, +2=97, +3=77, +5=88, +8=113, PMPS=175

HOLY SMOKES! Where did happy fun times go :(

Moved shot time 30 mins early.. really wasn't worried about shooting THAT ps early.. Nova what's going on with you and how can I help? :(.. *sigh*

Never fails.. I start to think we're on the right track with baby steps.. and things just slip away.. be nice if I could stop crying.. I HATE the 1U dose.. hate it hate it hate it.. just can't get away from the stupid thing no matter how hard I try.. can't go higher, can't go lower.. driving me NUTS.

Anyways.. should I go back up to 1U? The short cycles don't seem to be making her go anywhere near too low..

Edit: Can't really do it until Wed or Thurs anyways..so she's just going to have to hold her own until then.

Re: 4/12 - Nova - AMPS=90, PMPS=175, +2=90, +3=54

Well I have no clue what she's doing (other than reading her condo.. and trying to make me look like an idiot).. my theory is that little miss predictable decided she wants to take up skydiving.

Don't you just love when they make you look like an idiot? You aren't, I promise! I wonder if she does like Tugger and goes up before she goes down? Hubby is online so I can't open pages and look at her ss to see for myself, I don't even know if this reply will post. The next window I open will be Verizon to look into getting him his own line. I can not deal with this.
