I did my first BGC yesterday and Tarragon's numbers were great. I got a little skittish for his evening shot when his numbers were so low so I only gave him 2U rather than his 3U. Now I could kick myself since he threw such a big number this morning.

I don't know how you all ever got the hang of this! It has taken me two weeks to learn how and where to get blood from him without stressing both of us out. I finally got the hang of it yesterday so I will be updating his numbers more faithfully now.

I talk to the vet this morning to go over the BGC numbers so hopefully she will give me some great insight.

I hope everyone has a great day!

Generally, we don't recommend that you shoot with numbers below 150 unless you have more data. You might want to take a look at the Data Ready sticky.

When you shoot a lower number than you've seen, you want to get both a +1 and a +2. Given that you shot a 73, you really needed to get some additional tests last night. You have no idea how low Tarragon's numbers may have gone last night.

What you're seeing this morning is a bounce. Tarragon isn't used to being in normal numbers. As a result, his liver panics and dumps a stored form of glucose and counterregulatory hormones into his bloodstream. This is a protective mechanism and all of our kitties experience this to some degree.

Thank you for the sticky. I was looking for that last night and couldn't pinpoint it.

I did do a +1 and +2 last night, I had just forgotten to put the +2 on my spreadsheet. It looked like it was on the rise again. However, I probably should have gotten a few more in the night.

He has been testing at around 200-230 before his shot, when I have actually been able to get enough blood. I haven't put those on the spreadsheet since I was on a learning curve and couldn't get a number each time. Yesterday was my first BGC and I think I have figured out the trick so it will be easier now.

I didn't know if the large number this morning was from a bounce. I am still really new to all of this and trying to feel my way through it.

Thank you for the advice. I really appreciate it.

Hi guys .. I'm sorry that you are seeing such a high number this morning, but Sienne is probably right, it's a bounce from tarragon being in the lower number range .. he's just not used to being that low, but he will get there .. And you are doing awesome .. Have a great day guys!
