Good Morning, Everyone,

We are saddened to hear of Curry's passing last night and send our deepest sympathy to Tena. Fly free, sweet Curry!

It's another cold, rainy-drizzly day, but the snow ended early this morning. Rusty was energetically trying to get us up an hour early this morning. He was licking my hair and forehead, head butting, squirming, jumping down off the bed, jumping back up. He was hungry! We had a good test, shot, breakfast (1 oz. Wellness Turkey; 1 oz. by Nature turkey & turkey liver, eaten in 2 sittings), and a good chillax in his little bed next to the welcome heat of the radiator. Last night, at bedtime, when he posted his green bg 93, he was more energetic than he had been all day and seemed to snap out of the doldrums. That pleased me, because I was worried that he might have a health issue. I think (hope!) that today's AMPS is a bounce from some good green numbers last night. We'll see later. Rusty wanted to go outside in the cold drizzle, and he did--but only for about 10 minutes. There was no squirrel activity. Bummer!

Edward is at his yoga class and we have nothing planned for the day. Tomorrow, if it clears up a bit, I will go on a hike with friends, but the weather forecast is not optimistic.

Wishing you all a good day and continuing to send healing vines and good thoughts to BigMac, Sid, Rocket, DC, and all kitties and beans in need of some,

Ella & Rusty

Re: 4/10 Rusty AMPS 153

I'm glad to hear that Rusty is full of energy and has snapped out of his doldrums, show us some happy Greens Rusty.

Re: 4/10 Rusty AMPS 153

Hi guys .. bet with those greens last night rusty worked up an appy, that's why he was so eager to get you up and going! I'm sure he'll be back down before to long, this is a nice starting point .. have a great day guys!

Re: 4/10 Rusty AMPS 153

Hi again,
Sienne, this is the 7th cycle on his newly fattened dose. I had been waiting for NDW to end (if that's what it was; I was also worried that he might be under the weather). If his numbers don't approach his "normal" today, I'll take him up another notch tomorrow (to skinny 1.75).

Re: 4/10 Rusty AMPS 153

It was nice to see Rusty back in green last night. I hope he settles into this now.

I was going back over your calculations for Rusty's calorie intake and I think you were right in the first place, 13.6 x 16= 217.6 + 70 = 287.6kcal/day. I really don't understand the other calculations w/ conversions you were given, but 230.4 kcal/day seems far too little. Using Dr. Lisa's calculation she gives an example of:
Using an optimal body weight of 12 pounds as an example, we come up with 233 calories/day as a starting point. [13.6 X 12 pounds] + 70 = 233
That is 233kcal for a 12 pound cat, not a nearly 17 pound cat! It is very important to not try to have him loose weight too fast.

You said you thought the weighed out food looked like more than you had been feeding. Dr. Lisa actually has another method for calculating food for weight loss which is her first choice for reducing calories:
First Method
The most accurate way is to calculate how many calories your cat is currently eating to maintain his not-so-svelte figure. Then take 80% of those calories as a starting point.
I would dish out all the food you give him per day the way you usually did, weigh it, calculate the just how many kcal he has been eating. Then just multiply by .8 for his reduced calorie intake. Give it 2 weeks and then you can see if it is working.
A safe rate of weight loss is 1 - 2% of their current body weight per week.
For Rusty's weight of 16 lb. 15 oz. that would be 2.71 to 5.42 ounce a week. The next week he should loose a little less. If no weight loss, reduce the amount of calories by 20% again.

I'd also reread the whole section on weight loss on Dr. Lisa's site.

Re: 4/10 Rusty AMPS 153, +5.5 99

Yay, we're at the lagoon again. Let's hope he stays there for a while!

Hi Ann,
Thanks for the info. about the calorie formulas. I had gone back to Dr. Lisa's page last night and saw that my original calculations were the ones she gave. And I think you're right that it might be better to use her first method. The main problem is that I have always given Rusty his food by eyeballing the volume, not taking into consideration that some foods have more calories per volume than others. So Wellness Turkey, for example, is twice the amount of calories as By Nature Turkey. I don't always feed the same amounts of the various foods, since when his numbers are trending high, I give more of the foods that are lower in carbs! Dr. Lisa does say that the calculation method is "generous", so I think that I'll just aim for a lower total than the 287 calories he is entitled to if his desired "lean" body weight is 16 lbs (not the 16 lbs. 15 oz. it is at present!) (actually, I think the 230 calories is about what he has been getting before I started to measure; yesterday he only got 190, because his appetite was slightly "off")

Re: 4/10 Rusty AMPS 153, +5.5 99

Morning! YAY!! Rusty - you made green! Way to go, and keep them coming.

Sounds like Rusty really wanted you up this morning, and did not want to wit from breffis. That would haev been BJ, and now Elsa, Mannie always just sits and waits. oh wow on all those calculations, but I really need to take a look at Mannie's. He's a bit overweight, but hasn't gained any,. just needs to loose some.... Guess those two had better get back to swimming some laps! Good luck with Rusty - sounds like you have a good workable plan for him. This bean needs to do the same. :-D

I am glad to to read that he has snapped out of the doldrums. phew! That always worries me, when one sees a change in behavior. It must have just been one of those days.

Outside in the cold drizzle? Rusty - very brave! I agree: bummer on the no squirrel activity.

Have a good day Ella. I hope the weather gets better so you can hike tomorrow.

Re: 4/10 Rusty AMPS 153, +5.5 99

Just remember that too few calories is worse than too many.
Hepatic lipidosis can also develop when a cat consumes ~50% or less of his daily caloric requirements over a period of many days. The definition of "many" varies from cat-to-cat. For this reason it is important to understand that you need to have some idea of the calories from canned food combined with the calories from dry food that your cat is consuming on a daily basis while you are implementing the transition to canned food. Or, if you have a multiple-cat household that makes it difficult to know how much each cat is consuming, I suggest weighing the transitioning cat daily.

I have never seen a cat develop hepatic lipidosis when consuming at least 15 calories per pound per day. This number is figured on lean body weight, not fat weight.
If your cat weighs 18 pounds but really should weigh 12 pounds, please make sure that he is consuming at least ~180 calories per day. (12 pounds lean body mass X 15 calories/pound/day = ~180 calories/day)

If Rusty should weigh 16 pounds, a minimum of 15kcal/lb would be 240 kcal a day.

Re: 4/10 Rusty AMPS 153, +5.5 99

A very exciting +5.5! Rusty is full of action today.
I hope your weather clears up, here it's cold, windy and starting to rain. Fingers crossed you get your hike tomorrow.

Re: 4/10 Rusty AMPS 153, +5.5 99

Hi guys, hope you're able to get outside! If not, I hope you enjoy lots of cuddles from Rusty! I always secretly enjoy the rain and the excuse to be lazy. . .with kitties!

Re: 4/10 Rusty AMPS 153, +5.5 99

Great news that Rusty is feeling better. Nice green there at +5.5. A nice lazy day sounds great to me. Can I come over? Hope you all have a great night Ella!

Re: 4/10 Rusty AMPS 153, +5.5 99

I'm glad Rusty is feeling better, both with that nice green and energy wise! Maggie had a couple of doldrum days, too, but seems better today. Yikes with the discussion of kcal and carbs, a little lost here, but I guess I should be doing it with Mags a little fluffy. Have a nice afternoon.

Hope the weather changes for you & Spring comes to the mountains again!
Have a good night--Hugs & Love from us!

Ni ni everyone and thanks for visiting and for the neat pics (Celi & Binks),

Rusty had some really active and energetic play and outdoor squirrel chases in the late afternoon, ate his +9 snack late, and then only ate about half of his dinner. Then he slept all evening and had the same bg at bedtime as at PMPS. Weird. Maybe not enough blood on the strip? Maybe my meter is going wonky? Then he gobbled up his FF T&G bedtime snack. His bedtime food awaits him (he's still downstairs; Edward thought he heard a mouse).

See you all tomorrow.

Ella & Rusty
