Upped my little man's dose today from 1.5 to 1.75 he spent most of the day outside as I was working, when I got home the meter wouldn't read the BG level, all it said was "HI". I was told once here that sometimes when upping the dose the liver doesn't know what to do with "normal" BG levels and it dumps extra glucose into the blood stream. I don't know... I checked it twice and gave him his shot after he ate. Not sure what's going on!

His poop is great, his appetite is great, his energy and alertness also really good... so he seems to feel more than fine! What's the deal?! I'm a little scared and hope I didn't hurt him :(

Don't worry - it takes time for a new dose to settle. Give it a few days. I've had the same issue with my guy - in a few you should see a change. no you haven't hurt him, but understand how you feel. if he was outside, perhaps he ate something that isn't on his food list - had that happen here too.

so - no, don't worry. New doses do take a few days.

Yeah I want to get him a collar that says "Don't Feed Me - I'm on a special diet" but he frickin' HATES collars and loses them in hours! I hope you're right about the dose needing to settle, I'm nervous until I get results! I hate waiting! :)

I do know what you mean - completely understandable! I'm not big on the waiting thing either. I'm also no expert, just know from my experience with Mannie. If you want to get the attention of those truly in the know her - put "dose question" in your subject line - it helps them find you.

And I hear you on the special diet thing, darling husband was the worst offender... he took training - came down to "don't feed the cat"...

Good luck to Jake!

You've got this partially correct. It's not exactly clear why this happens, but sometimes with dose increases, rather than the insulin initially bringing the numbers down, numbers jump up. We affectionately refer to this as "new dose wonkiness"(NDW). What you are describing is what happens when numbers drop into the low blues or greens (i.e., normal BG) and then there is a bounce into high numbers. This is rebound and is caused by the liver releasing stored glucose and counter-regulatory hormones into the system. Unless Jake dropped into lower numbers today while you were gone, it looks like this is more NDW than a bounce.

Are you testing for ketones? With Jakes numbers still running high, this is an "ounce of prevention."

Yes, today I checked right after that huge number. I got lucky and he had to pee... so I did two tests, both showed the lowest number "trace" ketones but it was barely the pink color that was for trace so I'm not sure.
