Morning All, I gave her 1 unit. Thank Goodness I did not have to chase her down. She hung out on top of the table, her usual place to be fed. When I got close, she looked like she wantd to bolt, but it was too late. I am getting as close to the edge as possible and last couple of times, it went well (so think more pain-free), but she is just not the type of cat who wants to even sit on your lap, let alone have her ear poked. Oh, well, it could be much worse, so I count my blessings today

Happpy Wednesday all, I may be able to get out of work by 3 today, so might have an earlier test also.

Congrats on your testing! It does get easier, and easier. We never believed it would happen, but it has.
I hope Cleo brings her little self down for you today. How about some nice yellows and blues today Cleo?
I hope tbp flies by and you get out by 3. have a good one!

Good morning and welcome to Lantus Land. I see you're very new here and that's great - you've found the best thing that could happen to you and your sugarcat! :-D Just like everyone says, things will get easier over time. I'm pretty sure I switched from using the lancet device and by hand ear pokes at least 4-5 times before I finally got the hang of doing it by hand. Treats really do the trick. All I have to do now is just say the word treat and my little guy comes running and is even drooling for his treat.

I hope you have a great day and that Cleo comes down a bit for you toady. Keep it up!

Here is your link to yesterday's condo: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=92863
We always include that so someone can go back and see her history. Good job with the testing! Treats will help a lot with Cleo's attitude. :-D Have a great day, Jane!

What is a good treat for SugarKitties? She is not a people food kitty. She did like some crunchy treats, but was never crazy in love with any. I had to chase her down to test her when I came home, and once again when she felt cornered, she let loose with a LARGE load of urine! thankfully we were out on the patio, so some bleach and the hose and all was good. I feel so bad...right now it is as if she hates me :(( I hope it gets better, cannot imagine it going like this for the rest of her life. I hope we manage together for her curve on Saturday. I may have to close all of the bedroom doors.

Don't worry - for most of us, initial testing was a bit of a nightmare.
I had to drag Honey out from under the bed by her scruff for a week or so.

Then, it suddenly got easier - weird, but that's the way it seems to go :-D

Yes, treats are really important. None of my 3 liked any treat I'd previously bought them but then I got the freeze dried chicken (I used Purebites which you can get in Petco but the online cheaper is she likes it).
Now they all come running if I shake the bag and Honey would let me test all day as long as she can chomp on them :-D

When you test, try to have everything ready. Then get the treats out - I crumble them in a dish so it takes her longer to eat - and then start the testing process.
Keep a treat handy so you can slip it to her quick if she starts to get restless.

Hmmm, freeze dried chicken, I will have to look for that! Thanks, I know it will get better, and I won't give up. Just extra stress at a bad time - I am thankful she has no other major issues. Vet's office did a full bloodwork when she was dx on 4/5, and everything was great for her age. Well except for the glucose of course-LOL! Her thyroid was a little low, but they felt it was caused by the diabetes, and was not an accurate reading.

Hello.
It takes a while but you will get a rhythm going.
There are other things that are good for treats too. If Cleo likes a pinch of tuna or some boiled or baked chicken/ or turkey. ( mine likes a bite of raw turkey when I get it)
Purebites also makes a freeze dried turkey, freeze dried shrimp ( which rehydrate very nicely) and freeze dried liver. You can experiment to find the one that gets the most attention. My cat didn't like freeze dried chicken
and I quickly learned she preferred the turkey ( has a higher fat content than chicken)

I went to look at your profile and saw this....

Amount fed per meal: None, poor kitty
Number of meals/day: 1

It is better for diabetic cats to get food more frequently...
I'm sure you didn't mean none.... since you then said 1 meal a day.

You can let them have a little food most anytime of the day but it's best to take it away at the very least, 2 hours before shot time so you don't have a food influenced test number.
Unregulated diabetes makes them hungry most of the time and smaller more frequent meals are better for their pancreas.

LOL Rhiannon, I have to update the profile. Someone on this board was nice enough to make it up for me :)) I will try to get alot of that done this weekend. There are not enough hours in the day for me right now.

I will have to hit Pet Supermarket and other local pet stores and check out their "treat" products. I really hope I find something she loves. Cleo has always been a "hideaway" cat. Only came out at meal times. Spends most of her day relaxing out on patio. Does NOT like to be handled in general, so this testing is hard on her and me. I truly feel like crying when she runs from me, even if I am just passing by. She is becoming more reclusive, just to avoid me. Still comes out to my hubby for some night time rubbing, but I am to be avoided. :(

And if it is time to be tested and given insulin, I can't just wait for when she feels like coming out. My other guys come to me when I call - she never did, but at leat she didn't run. Have to stop stressing about this.
We can only do the best we can -

Jane

You can also get the dog version of the freeze dried chicken. It's cheaper than the cat ones. Don't tell Cleo. Is there anything that Cleo especially likes, like a toy? You could play with her test and shot time.

Hi, Jane, even though Cleo doesn't show it, I can yell you're a great kitty mama.

Once you find some treats that she likes I'm sure her opinion of you (especially during tests) will improve.

I buy PureBites freeze dried treats at Petco ~ Ripley likes the chicken, turkey, and shrimp. I try to keep all 3 varieties 'in stock' because her taste is always changing  .

I know it's hard to believe, but it does get easier.

Oh, Ripley loves tuna flakes, too  .

It's nice to 'meet' you and Cleo!

i was going to suggest tuna/bonito flakes but Josie beat me to it. They are much cheaper at Asian supermarkets than at a pet store.

In addition to freeze dried chicken, my kitties also like Wellness Pure Delights. They are a jerky style treat.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I will try the Pet Supermarket or Petco tomorrow. They are closest to me, and I need something!!
