I usually post under the ProZinc group, but wanted some other eyes on this problem.
Briefly: last Thursday afternoon Fred was paralyzed on his left side. He was fine in the AM but by 4pm He couldn't stand and only wanted to lay on that side. I took him immediately to the vet where it was decided that all vitals were normal so it must be a neurological problem. Fred spent the night at the neurologist. They examined him but could determine no issues except for the paralysis. He was kept over night and given fluids but no insulin, as an MRI was expected for Friday.
After the MRI and spinal tap, they could not determine the problems other than a small spot on his cerebellum In the place that controls motor responses. Everything else was normal. Blood work was sent out and returned from the Univ. of Color. with no indication of infection. We are waiting for the tests on lymphoma to return from Auburn Univ.
The strange thing is that he was given antibiotics, in case it is an infection. The vet said that was a long shot in his opinion. The stuff upsets his stomach, but almost immediately he was able to walk around - with difficulty and weakly -- but the response was immediate. If this is a tumor, would it respond to an antibiotic?
His numbers are high for him, but I'm working to get them down. His stomach was upset, but I'm tempting with rotisserie chicken, laced with Forti Flora, which seems to have boosted his appetite a little today. He even went outside to nap in the grass. he looks bright, but his body is failing him.
One vet suggested that he could have a "protozoan infection". He did eat a chipmunk or two before they hibernated last fall. Could this be the problem??
Everyone is stumped. I don't know whether to plan for his death or his recovery. This is just so hard - especially when we were so close to regulating his BGs.
Any help would be appreciated!
