Oh no. Please keep me posted about Mouse!
Mouse is 2 1/2 weeks into her Amoxicillin. Some days she seems on the mend. Other days she seems to be worse. This morning she seemed pretty off. She ate a little, but she is still drinking more than usual. At least I see her drinking. I never used to. She fell asleep with her nose in her water dish! Weird. So, I called the vet. We may go in tomorrow. Other than that, she had a good day. She has also lost another 1/2 lb. So, I am all over her with the food! I just wish I knew if this is just how it goes with these infections. Is it the Amoxicillin? Is she getting better? I wish I spoke cat! And now Kahlua's weird episode.....I hope that's nothing.

I am concerned that Amoxicillin isn’t the right antibiotic for her infection. I probably didn’t say so because (1) I can be forceful; and (2) I was hoping that the Amoxicillin would really do the job.

I am, too. The vet said it's the correct one, but I felt like she was doing better on the Orbax I think it was. I have to say her urine doesn't stink anymore and no straining. The pooping is under control, too. But, she's not fully herself and I'd expect that at this point. They could recheck the urine to see if the bacteria levels look lower, right?

Yes. They could. And actually send it out to a laboratory for culture and sensitivity/ susceptibility testing - to see what antibiotic will kill whatever is in there.

That's what she did the first time. Can that culture be wrong? Is there more than 1 antibiotic that can be used? Tonight Mouse is racing around and playing with her toys!

I'm calling the vet again in a bit. Be forceful and tell me which antibiotic might be good, Mouse is miserable.

There are so many. It's just awful. Which antibiotics have you tried before that Mouse can/can not take? Did she take Clavamox and have a bad reaction to it?

you probably already called... if so... tell me what the vet suggested?Amoxicillin is in the penicillin class of antibiotics. There are so many to choose from and I'm wondering if he wants to switch to a different class like the quinolones or cephalosporins?

Okay....so the antibiotic is working. The infection is all but gone. She is constipated again. So back to more Miralax. I'd slowed it down because she had diarrhea, but up we go! They rechecked bloodwork and her kidney values are slightly higher. Not abnormal, but a smidge higher. She got fluids and a cerenia shot and has eaten a bit. Still yowling, but she did eat a bit.

Oh. Poor dear Mouse. That constipation causes her to feel so lousy. Is she still on the Amoxicillin? You said all but gone. Does that mean she still had just a few bacteria in her urine or not? I hope the Miralax will help her soon.

She has to finish the Amoxicillin. The vet said she thinks it's way up in her kidneys, so she wants to get it for good. But nothing shows up in her urine currently. Poor baby has been frantically yowling since yesterday. She has finally eaten some boiled chicken and fallen asleep. She is exhausted. She won't eat her food, but she does love that chicken!

That is dangerous to have a kidney infection and it can cause damage, so I am glad you’ve been on top of this. Usually for a kidney infection, a minimum of 30 days of antibiotics is required. And then you have to make sure it doesn’t return. Hooray for chicken!

Yeah....that's why the long term antibiotic. She said at least 6 weeks. Her kidney numbers were perfect in January, so I'm hoping we caught this fast enough. Poor girl has been at the vets nearly weekly for 2 months.

I am glad to hear your vet is handling this appropriately. You would not believe how many of them do not. I see it happening on another group a lot. Poor mouse. Good job, Maria!
