3/9 Niki - all over the place still

Sorry to bother you all again. Niki did not get a shot tonight as he was 62 PMPS, but he was acting normally.

I guess my concern is that he is all over the place (still). We made the switch to total wet food yesterday morning in the hopes that it would make a difference and start normalizing these numbers, but maybe it is too soon to tell?

He is acting fine and has put on some weight, which we are happy with since he was pretty much skin and bones when he got here.

Vet is suggesting possibly switching him to another insulin, but has not indicated which one.

If anyone has time to look at his spreadsheet and offer any thoughts, we’d appreciate it.

thanks!

The problem isn't the type of insulin, it's that his dose is too high for his new diet. You should have reduced to 3.5 units after that 56 on the 7th. And since you only got four shots in before getting low (but still safe) numbers again, and are now feeding all wet, I might suggest trying 3.25 units now. Switching from dry food to all wet food can make a huge difference.

Whenever you find your self having to skip multiple times because the number is too low for you to shoot, reducing the dose will help you shoot twice a day. By the way, I wouldn't be surprised if you will still have to reduce the dose some more.

I am assuming that you are using SLGS for dosing guidelines as you did have dry food in the picture. That means you should reduce the dose anytime you get a number below 90.

Thank you so much! Your explanation makes so much sense. We need to be more vigilant in reducing his dose when the numbers support it. I knew that the elimination of the dry food made a difference, but I wasn’t aware that it would make that much of a positive difference so fast. That’s a good thing for Niki I guess!

We will go with 3.25 units tomorrow morning.

thank you so much for having patience with me as we try to figure it out.

You are doing a great job testing. Keep it up. We have seen doses go down by several units when dry is removed. It all depends on the carb% of the dry and how much they are eating so it's hard to say where you will end up. But I expect you will see more reductions in your future.

If you're able, it addition to Wendy's suggestion, it may help if you post a bit more often. Getting comfortable with a dosing method takes practice and there are always lots of questions. We're happy to help.
