Started insulin regimen today. Vet wanted to watch him. I let them do it as I wasn't sure I could wake myself up every couple of hours to test his blood. Night shifter here, unfortunately had a hard time sleeping over the worry. All early BG readings were done by the vet.

You should have seen the look he gave me when I told him I already had a glucometer and that I had gotten a recommendation for one that worked from multiple people. I thin he wanted me to buy the kind they have there thats especially for cats and dogs.

Anyways the vet gave me this:
8:45 Insulin given BG 340 Did not want to eat
11:15 BG 240
2:00 BG 118
3:15 BG 178

Did I fill out my chart right ya'll? I wasn't sure what to do with half hour increments. He was at 186 when we got home at 5:30.

Whoa, he was at 253 before his shot and dinner, but jumped up to 344 in an hour. I'm assuming it jumped more this evening then it did at the vet because he refused to eat for the vet. I wish I could have stayed at home with him and kept checking his levels for the night. nailbite_smile At least I get off a little early today, so I can check it again when I get home.

I hope this wasn't just me being a total failure at giving him his injection. No one ever really showed me physically how to do it. I mean they told me, and pointed out where I should do the shots, and I looked it up online, but I never got to physically see someone do it.

Should I have someone check my technique? Or am I making mountains out of molehills?

Hi-

I'm a newbie myself, so I don't feel qualified to answer your questions. But when you have specific questions, it helps to note that you have a question in your subject line, then the experts know you need some help.

takes some days for the insulin shed to fill...i'll leave it for the more experienced folks to clarify, but if you put the word 'question' in your subject line,
it will catch their attention.

welcome! by the way...you'll like this forum...lots of good help and support here!

Haha, sorry ya'll. I wasn't sure if I should change it or not XP

This is my first condo so thats why you haven't seen me! Please call me Kurai, though that's obviously not my real name, but it is a real nick name.

I read about the insulin shed, even had a whole conversation with the vet this morning about it. Rather one sided I might add. I don't think he understood what I was talking about X-x. Said he doesn't have many patients using Lantus.

I'm making mountains outta molehills. I'll keep checking on him though :3 Thanks guys. Hopefully I can do a mini curve at home this week.

Here's how we would translate the numbers into Lantus-speak:
  • 8:45 Insulin given BG 340 Did not want to eat --> AMPS = 340
  • 11:15 BG 240 --> +2.5 = 240
  • 2:00 BG 118 --> +5.25 = 118
  • 3:15 BG 178 --> +6.5 = 178

You can look at Gabby's SS for one way of noting the times. You may need to manually change the colors if you have more than a number in a cell.

If Daniel didn't eat all day, it's quite possible that's why you're seeing such higher numbers this evening. Also, if you look at the "New to Lantus/Lev" sticky, you'll notice what an ideal curve looks like. A food spike is expected at +1.

As Celi mentioned, during the first 5 - 7 days of Lantus, you might not see a huge response. This is because a small portion of the insulin you're giving is going to form a depot or "shed." This is what makes Lantus a much gentler insulin and helps to make it a long-acting insulin. There's more info in the sticky on this topic.

Thanks Sienne, I'll go ahead and fix that in my spreadsheet. Glad the spike is to be expected, in time I'm sure I'll actually figure out what I want to see, and what I am seeing on this chart. I dream in charts and numbers now XP
