The zyrtec might be making him sleepy but hopefully it'll turn around soon. I give civie manic Moo zyrtec and she'll sleep for a while then out and about. I understand about the fear of going back to the vet. The two recent vet visits for Doodles I was not in the room (one was a 4 hour stay), the other was acupuncture where they had me leave for the needle insertion and when I went back in he was under the couch and it was disgustingly filthy under there. A few days later is when all the mystery began.

Hang in there Elise and sending lots of vines your way.

The vet that was in the office said to give 1/2 a benadryl as it's stronger but I know that can make them very sleepy and I need him awake enough to eat so many have said zyrtec won't and can act as an appy stimulant so for now that is what I bought.

The vet visits are now going to be more of a problem than ever and even if or rather when he beats this without a visit he is supposed to go back next week to check kidney values again.:banghead::(

I'm so clueless on this stuff but honestly she has been eating more lately! I don't give it consistently. Mr. Max man is going to beat this for sure. Have you looked for a mobile vet? I know it would be unnerving to switch.

I can't even find another vet I trust that works nights and weekends when mine has a little time off. Oh, now he's only in Fridays until 11:30 so add that to my list of time I'm not covered. I'm going to gently feel him out on whether I can get a private email for when I'm really scared but I doubt I will get it. Maybe he will agree to have the vet on duty call him but that likely is the best I can do and it might upset the vet plus who knows if she would really call him.:banghead:

Just got off the phone with my vet. The IDEXX urinalysis was all normal. The pH came back up so it looks like his CKD just advanced in a big way but it is atypical so we recheck in a month. If the discharge is milky he wants to give him a shot of Convenia which scares me. He will give an oral if I refuse the shot but again said he had not had any issue with it. Pray neither is needed. Thanks.

I sure hope no AB is needed. Frankly I don't like any of them. So far Doodles has not had any issues with the Covenia shot. Although the first 48 hours he did seem a little more sleepy. Its so hard for me to tell these days if something is wrong or if it's from the high numbers. Sending vines and prayers for no AB!!!

Max got a shot of it for a mystery ailment as well. He did okay.

Prayers that you can stay AB-free....poor Max. But, at least he's eating now!!!

I finally reached a point with Trix where I only take her if it's an emergency - the flares and colds were too hard on her. I don't even take her for BP checks any more, because even those visits caused her p-titis to flare. And, she is now maxed out on her CKD treatments, so frequent checks won't tell us to change anything anyway. It's a risk and sometimes I really worry....but by NOT going for anything we've actually managed to keep her "healthy" for a full year now - anti-jinx! Sadly, we have to take her soon because by law they can't renew her scripts past the 1 year mark.

What would you do in my case? Oral or shot if antibiotic needed? No pressure. I think I'll take a poll if necessary. I'm almost at your point. Thus is really frustrating. I hope Trixie survives incident free when you take her in.

Personally I would do oral. I had the option last week with Zen and he is a BEAR to medicate, but I still chose oral instead of the shot. It takes both DH and I and I had to go with liquids because I don't think I could ever get a pill down his throat (prayers that I never have to) because Zen is just that difficult with meds (otherwise he's a big mushy baby!). I know chances are slim that the shot could cause issues, but it does just make me nervous that once it goes in, there's no going back, whereas with oral meds, if there is an issue, you can easily discontinue them. That's just me, though.

Which ones are best for possible kidney though culture negative and respiratory do you know?

That I don't know for sure, but last year Trix was on Zeniquin and it did work well for her for her p-tities. She was on a second AB at one point because she did culture positive for enterrococous (no idea how to spell that)...that was a different AB that I had to have compounded into a sugar-free liquid but unfortunately I can't remember what it was....sorry. I bet Marje would know, though!

Piling on more vines. :bighug: I sure hope that this will clear up without more vetty visits and ABs. My vet's rule of thumb is always that, unless and until the discharge turns green, she won't give antibiotics. If it's just clear or milky discharge, it's most likely viral and the ABs won't make a difference anyways. I would give the Zyrtec and Lysine a chance to kick in.

He's all over the place probably because he doesn't feel well. This is scary. I wonder how long it takes for them to get over a cold if that is what he has. :banghead::(

Been wondering the same with my civie who started his sneezing a couple of days before Max. I read somewhere up to 2 weeks but Theo is improving just on Lysine.

Sending healing vines for sweet Max. :bighug: I hope you don't need another vetty visit soon.

Thanks Wendy. He's miserable. I felt rotten the last couple weeks too but I'm not diabetic. How long has Theo been on lysine? I've read it can take a week to kick in and a new study said it doesn't work.

Sorry to hear Max is still feeling so cruddy, Elise!!

As for the Convenia, from what I understand, it's most effective use is for skin conditions, not URI's, so I'd stick with a different (oral) antibiotic. When China (and everybody else here) had that bad URI last fall, everybody was on Baytril and it worked well.

Sure wish you could find a vet that does home visits....would be so much less stressful on both you and dear Max :bighug::bighug::bighug:

I started Lysine last Thursday, but then I noticed it had expired so got some fresh on Friday. But Theo's only sneezing, no discharge from either eyes or nose. He did get a steaming from the shower yesterday too. Theo was also at the shelter for 5 years, got exposed to lots. I wonder if he'd build up some immunity from previous exposures and it's just a milder version. But it'd been quite a few weeks since vet visit so I don't know where he could have gotten a cold. Or it could be allergies and the rain is washing it out of the air.

Usually amoxicillin is the best a/b for a URI or amoxicillin and clavamox. URIs are usually always viral but many vets will give an a/b for potential secondary bacterial infections. Of course, amoxi and clavamox can make some cats nauseous and inappetant. ECID...Gracie took clavamox for months with never any issues.

Baytril is a pretty potent a/b which is often given for ear, respiratory, and urinary tract infections inc kidney infections but it should be used with caution in cats with CKD. Also, the dosing has to be precise because one uncommon but noted side effect is it can cause blindness.

I also wonder if the stress and his age compromised his immune system and this is his feline herpes acting up.

Sending a ton of vines for Max.
