3/7 Marvin in hospital

Hi All,

Update on my big Marvin, he wasn't eating the last day which for him is a big big sign something isn't right. He was acting like he wanted his food, excited and all, but when I got back from walking the dog he hadn't eaten any or maybe a lick or two. I went to work this morning, and booked a vet appointment for the afternoon. When I came home to pick him up, he was breathing different and not acting like himself.

The stress from the car ride to vet made him worse. When the vet saw him, she immediately took him and had the staff give him oxygen. They took Xray, and showed liquid in the chest. She's concerned too because I guess the internal organ seem to be pushed maybe from the liquid or something else. I am thinking it is his heart, even though the murmur is no longer there, he does have an arrhythmia at the moment. Vet removed some liquid and had me bring him to Ottawa vet hospital so they could monitor him tonight.

I got really worried as his breathing got worse on the ride, plus he was pretty doped up. Poor thing is in a oxygenated cage. When I left he looked a bit better. The vet at the vet hospital was really really good. He hasn't dealt with Acromegaly but understands it's treating the symptoms and avoiding any unnecessary tests or procedures.
Costs are amazingly high.... :o :arghh::woot::(

Thinking that it is his heart, we discussed perhaps starting heart meds without the tests, however it could be dangerous if the issue is with the lungs.... So tonight will be focused on stabilizing him and then we will see what steps to take

@Wendy&Neko would love your take on this.

(((Nat))) so sorry Marvin isn’t feeling well. :bighug:Did the vet say fluids in his lungs, or elsewhere in the chest? Neko spent some time in an oxygen cage when she had heart problems. Has Marvin been given fluids the last little while? That’s what set off Neko’s heart issues. Long story short, she ended up in the oxygen tent not because of fluids, which were drained, but air in the chest cavity which happened as a side effect of fluids drainage.

Does the Ottawa vet hospital have a cardiologist? I think an echocardiogram and consult with a cardio vet are the next steps. Did the vet put him on anything for the fluids, like Lasix (furosemide) or is that the one they are waiting to decide whether it is heart or lungs.

I can sympathize on the costs.:arghh:

They are not sure if lung or heart, the xray they could not see the heart cause of the liquid. They were only going to take another xray if he got worse. They did just do some blood test which are abnormal and said it's a sign of heart problem. They don't have a cardiologist on staff but do have a mobile one that comes once a week. The tech said they gave him some meds to help with his breathing and seems to be helping and now will try to ween him off the oxygen over night. the med they were concern if we gave and was a lung and not heart problem would be the Ace inhibitors, so waiting on deciding what to do till he is stable.

Oh Nat, I haven't been on much, but happened to see your post tonight. I'm sorry Marvin is having a tough time. Sending lots of positive thoughts and vines, and heaps of :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug: for you, I can just imagine how overwhelmed you must feel, just take things one step at a time. Hoping your vet will get things assessed, do keep us posted, you never know who might have experience that can help you as you go. :):bighug:

The vet just called, looks like Marvin is struggling again, they took another Xray, and still can not see the heart. So they are going to try and remove some more liquid and see if that helps. He will call me after the procedure to give me an update.

Keeping you and Marvin in my thoughts. It took several chest taps over a couple days before Neko could get out of the oxygen cage. We also stopped her benazapril (ace inhibitor). I was lucky that the clinic I was going to at that time had a cardio vet and the ER. If you are interested, here is the link to the day she came home. Read back a couple days for the story.

Vet just called again, they removed some more liquid, there was quite a bit. They also did an ultrasound and there is some weird flow in a chamber. They will be treated him as a CHR, they are giving him meds for the liquid, think it's the one you mentioned earlier. He did mention Marvin is unique. If all goes well I should not get more updates tonight, unless things get worse.

I will go and read Neko Story, will help me probably figure out questions to ask and what to do. Thank you so much Wendy as allways I really appreciate your support and so does Marvin.

Wow sounds like Marvin's story today. Pretty sure Marvin is having the exact same issues, except for the air/gas in the chest. If memory serves which is scary think he had twice the amount of liquid removed (early after noon and tonight), think vet mentioned 300 something lol .... I don't know my measurements. If it is double, that would explain a lot, poor baby, off in a few to try and get some sleep. will post tomorrow when I can.

Thanks to all

Hugs and pets and loves to you and Marvin. All four of my fuzzers send you both love
