I fired up my old cell phone last night...

and found this pic of Binks taken five months prior to his Dx  :o

Don't tell Binks I shared- he'd be mortifed...but I believe this might shed some light on how we came to be a part of the Lantus Family :-D

the pic is sideways and you have to click on it to enlarge (pun intended),
but I think it speaks volumes (pun intended)...
a cautionary tale featuring an uninformed, indulgent bean who thought her "Chunky Monkey" was 'charmingly plump'-
and a kitty that reaped the whirlwind as a result

what a great idea for a Loose Lips Condo, Anne!

"Before and After pics of our Sugarbabies"

This is the "new improved" pic (thanks to CD and her magical powers)...
we'll call it "Half-a-Binkster"

Eat your heart out, Marie Osmond!

In all fairness, the camera does add 10 pounds.   There was just more of Binks to love. Looking good now though!

I'm right there with you Celi...Binks looks great at his new leaner weight. Ollie needs to lose a few pounds, maybe he would have a chance to join Binks at the falls if I got him on a diet and made it work. :)

Thanks for always stopping by our condo, you always put a smile on my face!

Here is my Chunky Monkey - Henry - playing with the ipad App. Its nice to see him play, because he is such a scardey cat that he hides when I pull out a cat toy:

Henry is 16.8 lbs and eats kibble only and only in a certain place with no stuff around (even a chair near his food bowl and he won't eat). He started his diet March 2nd. He is not diabetic but he's not even three years old. Remember cats can't lose weight like humans - their livers clog with body fat their body burns - Feline Hepatic Lipidosis. So Henry is going to be closely monitored to avoid this. We have a baby scale that weighs to the ounce. Goal for this week is to feed enough that we know he will maintain weight and not gain. We will reduce the calories by 1-2% a week. If he loses more than this we will feed him more. After three weeks of 1-2% weight loss, we will do a week or two of maintenance to give his liver a break. Safe weight loss in cats is slow weight loss. I do not want to deal with diabetes with Henry.

PS. Broken diabetic foster adoptee Heff's blood glucose was tested a couple weeks ago after breaking into the dog kibble. His hair has been looking a little greasy too. He pulled out a 50 right on the button.

Celi, what a difference with the after pic of Binkster. In the first one, he could be Maggie's twin when she was first diagnosed with the curvy tummy. :-D And that tail.....
Karrie, the video of Henry is adorable and so good to see him playing. He has come a long way under your care.

Oh my goodness, Karrie...Henry is ADORABLE! and now I see why Tess and Henry and other kitties are always trying to look UNDER the I-Pad!

So now...bean ignorance admissions...

Binks went from 9 lbs to 18.5 lbs (with nary a vet EVER suggesting he lose weight :? and a momma that just LOVED to cuddle and 'knar his belly')...
then we lost his Boxer daddy and his Manx daddy within a week's time- and his vet and I attributed his sudden weight loss to 'grief reaction' rather than illness.
So poor lil neglected guy went from 18.5 lbs to 8 lbs...and it was only the neuropathy that finally prompted me to take him to a different vet.
By that time...he was quite ill...we relocated a week after his Dx with a useless vial of Vetsulin- and 2 months later as I cradled my Lil Baby on my lap at 3am
expecting him to not live out the night...we stumbled onto the FDMB.

And at that moment...Ceiling Cat intervened and sent us a miracle in the guise of Venita from DCIN- Binksy's "Lightning Action Angel" o:-)-
who got us set up with supplies- guided us to the Lantus Forum...and thus began our blessed relationship with YOU WONDERFUL FOLKS !
Small wonder that we revere this place, eh? :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

ROTFLMAO, CD!!!

(and somehow i think it's no accident that Binks has a bag shouting 'Flaming Hot')

You guys crack me up!!!!!! Celi I had no idea Binks was so sick before you found FDMB. Heart tug. You guys all know Maverick's story (in my signature).

I feel bad for letting Henry gain all this weight. When I adopted him he was only 13lbs and chunky then. I didn't have capacity - and now I have to do sooo much more work to get him to lose this weight safely.

I wish I could meet Binks in real life. How are things with the fur family?

Bahahahaha, at CD's picture. Celi, you can't let her at your photos....or the Binkster at your chips.

Karrie, adorable video. I want an IPad. I love how Henry bats at the floor, where mousie ran under the IPad.

Things are going along swimmingly with the girls, Karrie- thanks for asking!

Annie is just the the sweetest little "steal your heart" charmer-
and she and Binks have actually tried a couple of quick, wary play sessions (does 5 seconds count as a session?).

Smudgie will likely never be content with her lot- you know..."always the Binksmaid, never the Binks" ;-)
but she hisses MUCH less frequently :-D

We just Live, Laugh, and Love in the Ol' Northwest...

OMG, I love this thread!
Binks has come such a long way- how miraculous! I didn't know he didn't have a tail- what a cutie!

And that Henry- omg! I want to hug him!

I confess, I have always loved fat cats. I never minded when Atticus got chubby. He was 17 lbs at his heaviest, but spent most of his life around 15.5. Was 12.9 at dx, is 14.6 now. I probably don't want him putting any more weight back on. But I now realize how harmful it can be to be a cute chubster. So I am trying not to love it so much when cats are fat. But, omg, that Henry!

Atticus' avatar pic is from a few years ago. Now he's strapping instead of zaftig.

OMG!! I have had a headache all day and have been feeling terrible until I read all your comments on this condo. I love the picture of the before and after Binkster, especially CD's picture of him on the potato chip bags. And Celi, the last picture you posted of the kitty with the pet door stuck on him was hilarious!

Karrie, thanks for posting Henry's video with the Ipad. He is a little bit of a chunkster but of course, the long hair adds a few pounds. Your diet plan sounds very safe and thanks for reminding us of how important it is not to let our kitties lose too much weight too fast.

Since it's GS cookies season. . .

I'm eagerly awaiting my cookies from the brownie down the street!

Simon was not actually very overweight. I think he was 14 pounds at Dx, but he has BIG feet and is a big boy. He was 12.8 at his dental, and he seems like he's at a good weight. My civvie---well, she's heavy. I actually took her to the vet today and the Dr. remarked "That's a whole lot of Calico!" as he pulled her out of her carrier. Molly weighs 13.8 but is a smaller framed cat. She has actually lost almost two pounds since being on the wet diet with Simon!

What a great condo....I needed these great laughs and I love Henry's video....he looks for the mouse off the screen!

Binks

ALL of you TOTALLY made my week!! Seriously, it has been one of those weeks and all of my belly laughs have totally made me forget about it all! Binks you are a very special and wonderful kitty. Don't fuss over what mama bean has written about you. Remember, we always tease those we love most! I agree with Anne! I didn't think he was all that fat till I had to search for his head amongst the pillows!   But as for your tail, Sam wants you to know that short (and crooked) tails are totally in fashion! (Have you ever taken a look at his funky one? Never seen one quite that...umm...well, is it too long, or too short...not sure). Thanks for all of the great belly laughs...heard they are good for your health and I believe it!! haha_smiley

BTW...Just watched Binks OTJ party video. I think I know now where all that lottabelly came from. That big ol bowl he was climbing into almost swallowed him up. Been a little piggy right from the start!!
