i'm tinkering with the food volume and timing to see if that improves his numbers if the majority of his food is with his injection. this morning i gave him a full can instead of 2/3 can and i'll give him about 1/3 can at +3.

my oldest daughter came home last night and saw him for the first time since Christmas - she says he's lost weight. i got on the scale with him and think he's about 13 pounds, so he may have lost a pound. he acts like he's starving in the evenings.

dang. i just stabbed myself with his needle while trying to get him still. i thought it only poked me cuz i didn't see any blood, and i went ahead and gave it to him anyway. but i did get myself. hopefully i didn't contaminate the needle.

good luck with the food experiment. Sometimes the best thing to do is try different things, take notes, and see what works best.

If Punkin doesn't get back to green today, it might be time to look at increasing his dose. It looks like the last dose reduction may not have held and he might need more juice to get the green back. Let's see what he does today, though.

Julie: Jill had us start putting foods, amounts, etc on Gracie's SS and it has helped us immensely. You can look at Gracie's SS and see how we do it. It's been really educational.

thanks for the input - i'll keep posting and welcome your suggestions.

hmmm, marjorie i looked at Gracie's spreadsheet. that's making me wonder if different varieties of the Fancy Feast might make a difference. I guess i keep looking for exactly what the equation is that raises his blood glucose, although i know it's a combination of factors and you can only adjust one at a time to get any real information.

i think i'll look back at the food list and see if there's much of a difference between the varieties we got. all were on the list, but still.

FWIW, when we started out, we were feeding alot of different foods: Wellness, Evo, Merrick, Before Grain, etc. Jill and Sienne both suggested that we try for more consistency so we went with Wellness because (1) it controls her numbers nicely (2) she's not allergic to it (Merrick) and (3) she'll eat it well. I do use the 1% Before Grain for her +5 snack just because it is very, very low carb and I want to give her a little something before her nadir so she doesn't get too hungry. I think the consistency has also helped a great deal as well as our feeding regimen. She doesn't take these enormous dives much any more (little dives but not huge ones).

Re: 3/6 punkin amps 273 +3~160

we switched his food to Fancy Feast on Feb 12, i think, and only have given him 4 varieties since. i just looked and they are all 3 grams carbs except the chicken which is 5 grams. probably one factor was that i was giving him too much for a treat after poking him, so now i've got that fixed.

i think i saw in a post to someone else that the +1 and +2 numbers were important because of what they showed about the cat's own insulin production. can anyone explain that to me?

he jerked away as i was giving him his pm shot and i think not all of it went in, although most did. we'll see what it looks like later.

Good that you didn't give more insulin. Never re-shoot because, as you observed, you don't know how much insulin went in.

I'm not sure what you were referencing about the +1 and +2 with respect to insulin production. I can take a try at explaining why those numbers may be important. With an "ideal" curve, the +1 will reflect a food spike. The +2 should be approximately the same as your pre-shot numbers. Lantus onset begins at approximately +2 or +3. If you see that numbers are decreasing at +1 or +2 it's most likely a signal that it's going to be a busy cycle.

Most people don't get a +1. I do test at +1 because Gabby is a kitty who drops fast and early in the cycle.
