..so nugget ate a pretty good first breakfast.. and now wont eat sometimes for a while... even after a dose of Mirataz, and its been given adequate time to kick in (since trying to do daily.. gave a little over half dose see how he does.. trying not to overmedicate. but maybe he needs the whole strip..)

i was advised by vet nurse to rub it in for a minute, only did like 5-10 seconds.. could it be that? i usually just swipe it in, rub it in maybe slightly on the pinna, and we go on our way.. idk.

maybe the phosphorus.. or anemia.. idk. 😞 all i can say is that the up and down is exhausting and scary. he got his insulin too.. i dont understand.

he finally ate some, but then had to potty.

if he doesnt start eating better.. hes just going to waste away and die. idk what to do. πŸ˜– i realized to start counting how many cans he’s eating.. and see it’s about 1 can and a bit over 1/4.. his usual is two cans. and sometimes he doesnt eat the whole thing fully. the stress is bad sometimes.. the hopelessness. but im grateful to have my cat.. and i would like more time. but i guess we just play by ear.. cause this isnt it. πŸ˜žβ€οΈβ€πŸ©Ή

I believe with this med it's "dose to effect" so if he needs more, then give more (up to the full dose).

I initially was giving 1/2 a dose and when Ivy had pancreatitis, my vet said to use the full dose as we wanted to be sure it would work.

So....If he's eating well with a full dose, then I would think you could then try giving less (please correct me if I am wrong here anyone else).

I guess it can't hurt to rub it in his pinna for a minute as suggested. Maybe it could make a difference??

I agree it's important to keep good notes on how much he is eating and watch his weight so you know what's going on there.

I know the stress is very intense 😭

sending you both much support and love :bighug: :bighug: πŸ’• πŸ’• β€οΈβ€πŸ©Ήβ€οΈβ€πŸ©ΉπŸ’–πŸ’–

Ugh, I'm sorry - and I have so much sympathy, since Gen is barely eating right now as well. It's so frustrating, especially when you're doing everything you're supposed to as far as you know (the meds etc)!

I think increasing the mirataz dose is a good idea. I know some folks around here have cats who respond to tiny amounts, but my vet said this about it when I mentioned giving a half-dose twice a day:

the label dose is 2mg/cat, which is actually at the lower end of the dosing range. Cutting it in half drops it to nearly subtherapeutic range, especially considering bioavailability transdermally is only about 65%.

ECID, but it makes sense that Pudge (and Gen) might need a higher dose. Also, it apparently comes in pill and liquid form - they may be more effective than the transdermal based on what she says about bioavailability.

I usually rub it in pretty good; I figure the absorption matters (the way you would rub lotion into your skin instead of letting it sit on top). But I'm not sure, that's all guesswork on my part.

Hang in there and keep loving him. ❀️ You're doing an incredible, attentive job, and he's really lucky to have someone who invests so much time and care!

Thanks for the suggestion. ❀️ I don't think Gen's having any trouble with hydration, though (he's good about drinking water), and with the diet trial I'm hesitant to add any new supplements (I may wind up cutting the ones he currently gets). But I'll have to remember about that just in case.

im doing it mostly as enticement; he seems to really like it 🀩 hydration is a bonus.. he has to drink like two packs a day tho for hydration benefit.. oof.

Thinking of you and sweet Pudge. It seems he's not the only kitty not eating well. What is going on???!??!?!?!????
If I could wish for one thing, I'd wish that all the kitties were half as hungry as Nestle is (he's always hungry and ready to eat).
