Well, that didn't go well. Shasta is home from her vet visit & sitting on my lap. Here is a recap of this morning's events:

- I slept in since I wasn't giving her insulin this morning. Well, I tried to sleep in...but SOMEONE wanted fuds (which she wasn't allowed to have before her vet visit.)

- She harassed me all morning. Whining about wanting food. Whine, whine, whine...gripe, gripe, gripe.

- I dropped her off at the vet's at 8am; told them my concerns about sedation/heart problems nailbite_smile , but I was concerned about possible renal failure, possible bladder infection/UTI, etc. (was hoping they would take her right back and sedate her...my understanding is that they let her sit for a while...bad idea.)

- I got a phone call at noon saying that they were unable to sedate her because she was hysterical, hyperventilating, lashing out, etc. :o They tried putting her in a quiet room, by herself to see if that would calm her down...nope.

- Luckily, I had already been set up to take the afternoon off. I got my sub plans ready and raced out the door. I got to the vet's clinic to see if I could calm her down long enough for them to do anything...nope. Anytime they got close to her carrier, she went feral kitty on them. It still shocks me to see her like that as I sit here and look at her napping on my lap. :YMSIGH:

- The vet said they will order some of the plastic litter so that I can try to get a urine sample for them. He knows it won't be sterile, but there are still tests he can run to assess the renal failure and/or bladder infection, etc.

Needless to say, I am sad that she would not cooperate with the vet. I do fear that renal failure is around the corner...lurking. I pray that I'm wrong, but in the meantime, more pets...less worry. (that last part is easier said than done.) :YMSIGH: So, that is our vetty story. Sorry I don't have good news or numbers or anything.

((hugs)) I'm sorry the vet visit did not go well .. Mocha turns into a big ol' lump at the vets and can pretty much be man handled .. but twix our civvie is like Shasta .. except you need to add in foaming at the mouth like a rabid dog  So I can totally relate to stressful vet visits ..

Re: 3/4 Shasta +13=276 +19=306 vet visit

((((Deborah)))) Poor you and poor Shasta! That was generally all around traumatic. I'm sorry it didn't go better. I hope the pee collection at home works and gets you some useful information. Yes, more petting and less worry is tough. That's why we need reminding again and again.

Re: 3/4 Shasta +13=276 +19=306 vet visit

aw man....

i guess you need my tenacity. I have an outdoor cat that when I first tried to teach him he could live here in the yard.... i got him a harness...
had him tethered to the porch.... and he was fine.... dum dum dum...
until my husband walks around the corner ... with bike cleats and helmet on... on rocks.... ( ugly sound) and the cat freaks.....
he's convulsing to get out of the harness.... and I don't want him to run back down to the culvert drain ( where he was living) so
I grab onto him thinking I'm going to calm him down... :-x
I didn't let go for at least a few minutes... he bit me, clawed me... arms/legs /head ... all over... before I finally let go as the harness did too....
and he ran away.... I tho't he would never come back again but he was there that night on the back porch... like it never happened...

urgent care for me who sent me to ER.... i was quite cute with all my bandaids/wraps... they were worried about my thumb but the surgeon
said i was fine... what a waste of a day....

anyway....

I thought there was a pill that made them relax/drowsy/tranquil that you might be able to give before future vet visits....
I remember we gave something to ours ( many years ago) for traveling to help them just lay down relax/sleep that the vet gave us.
After all, she'll have to see a vet at some point.... maybe it would help her future visits ....
obviously you need vet appts where you can stay and be the assistant. And she might a straightjacket... they do sell those for cats...

I think my tenacity is what made Shadow cave when she would have her little fits that she didn't want a shot ....
I figured out with her I had to show her I"m still the alpha.... at home....
when she goes to the vet... she melts too.... never gives them any trouble.... but she fights me pretty hard.... it takes 3 of us to trim
poop off her butt hair when it gets stuck to her... she won't let me do it.... she'll manage to get a paw up on my head and try to scalp me.

Good luck getting that sample... :YMHUG:

Re: 3/4 Shasta +13=276 +19=306 vet visit

Deborah, oh my, so sorry about the Vet visit and Shasta so traumatized! Has this happened before at this Vet? I Hope Shasta has calmed down now that she's home. I remember my Siamese boy was a holy terror at the Vet's and had to be sedated. Hugs for you both.

Re: 3/4 Shasta +13=276 +19=306 vet visit

((((Deborah & Shasta))))

What an ordeal for poor Shasta! Had she ever been to that particular vet? If so, they should have noted in her chart that she would need to be examined right away and not left to fret for hours. I hope that they will make a note of this for her future visits.

This evening you and your sweet Shasta can relax and hopefully the urine samples will be easy for you to get. Bummer on the whole day!

Thinking good thoughts for Shasta and hoping that any possible renal/urinary issues can be dealt with easily.

Hugs to you, Deborah,

Ella & Rusty

Re: 3/4 Shasta +13=276 +19=306 vet visit

I'm wondering the same as Rhiannon.....why can't they give you the sedative and let you shoot it and then take her right in? Or a pill?

I'm sorry for such a stressful day.

With the urine, the vet can check the urine specific gravity. If it is low (she isn't concentrating her urine), it can be a very, very early indicator of CKD; quite often, the BUN and creat might still be normal but there would be a decrease in the USG. Eventually, you would start to see the BUN and creat go up.

Hugs for you both!

Re: 3/4 Shasta PMPS=211 vet visit

Deborah I'm sorry things didn't go well at the vet. I hope Shasta has recovered now. Hopefully the pee collection will be successful and give you some idea of what is going on with her.

Re: 3/4 Shasta PMPS=211 vet visit

Maple is the exact same way, to the point I have to have a travel vet come to the house for her. If she ever gets ill, not sure what I'll do, She is out of controll and stresses so much don't know if it's worth putting her through it, so I pray she stays healthy.
That pic made me laugh, then I instanly thought, there is NO ONE like mom. Shasta knows that more than anyone at that moment.
Sending healing and good test vines.
Just love her and focus on the moment, try not to worry < coming from the biggest nerotic on the board...  ohmygod_smile

Re: 3/4 Shasta PMPS=211 +1.5=174 +2.5=105 +3.5=83 vet visit

Thank you, everybody, for the ((hugs)), support, advice, stories of other crazy kitties and so much more! Shasta has wanted to be on my lap most of the day, but she's quick to remind me that she's still pissy with me! Her numbers are fairly low tonight and I say that because she has missed out on 2 shots this weekend (Friday night and Monday morning).

She's eating ok...not great, but ok. Her pee piles are still ranging from small to medium and I feel that she's still drinking a bit more water than she was even last month. She had a small amount of poo and it concerns me that it's not more...she's getting 1/8 tsp miralax every morning and 1 tsp - squash every night. Is all of this ok? Should I increase something? Decrease something? Freak out a little more?

We sent our vet a little note after we got home...
Shasta's sorry

Any chance one of the vet techs could come by and get a blood sample?

Maybe next time they'll do the tests as soon as you arrive!

    on the note to the vet! Mike wants to know if she's Lucretia McEvils sister....of course, you are pretty young...you might not know who that is ;-)

Nice numbers tonight for the McNasty cat. Love the pic. Sorry you couldn't get the answers you are looking for today.

Do you have a traveling vet nearby? They get pretty good at dealing with the wild ones.

Very cute note, although I think Shasta doesn't look one bit sorry. Maybe even proud of herself.  I had to look up Lucretia McEvil.

Liz, I think you're right...she is proud of herself. ohmygod_smile I, too, had to look up Lucretia McEvil.   Thanks, Marje!

Sienne & Wendy - I remember my last vet (that I didn't care for) mentioning that she would consider coming to my house to draw blood or anal sac expression...whatever we were dealing with at the time...until she asked about her temperament at home...she's not a bit nicer. In fact, I think she would take it personally if I ever brought a vet here...on her own turf. She eventually warms up to people, but it takes weeks and weeks of always being around. Maybe I should place an ad: SWF (single white female) desperately seeking SMV (single male vet) for live-in boyfriend status and wild cat care giver!!!! :-D

Oh man...it must be late. Time to haul Shasta off to bed. Thank you, again, for checking in on us. I'll keep everyone updated on any progress. Good night!

I love that - I don't know why I didn't think of that when I was single! And Shasta's apology - too cute!

I have two scary kitties at the vet now. Angie used to be an angel but since the vet gave her a few bg curves she has become "fractious" or "uncooperative" and the vet nurses can't get her out of the cage! End of bg curves. Angie turned into sweet kitty as soon as she saw me and jumped into my arms and got all smoochy - I think it was just to make a point to the vet nurses "see how much I hate you!!!"

Jetzin my other cat was a feral kitten and he reverts whenever he's afraid - he can be scary at home or at the vets. He actually cut himself on the nose by lunging at the bars of his carrier to attack the vet! He makes the most terrifying noises and needs a general for anything to happen to him. I've had a few vets ask me not to bring him back and ask if it wouldn't be better if we just put him down! When he's at home and not scared he's a total sook and very purry.

I'm impressed that you manage to take bg readings from Shasta! I really hope that you work things out with her. It's worrying having a cat that won't accept check ups.
