I apolgize the update is so lengthy. After typing it all up I realized its soo long... I should not have tried to explain so much lol but dont want to retype. (and sorry for any yucky details)

The tech took Jupes temp which was normal. She weighed him and he did gain a little weight since the last time he was there. (Not necessarily important here… but just thought I would mention it here)

The vet first did an exam and felt Jupe’s belly. He said he could feel stool but that it felt soft. He said because of Jupe’s past problems with constipation and blockages, he wanted to do xrays just to be sure. He showed us the xray and explained that Jupe does have a lot of stool in there… but he doesn’t see anything that indicates a blockage. He said he thought Jupiter must have been starting to get constipated so it was a good thing we gave Jupiter the enema on Saturday. If we wouldn’t have given the enema and Jupe didn’t have any bowel movements, the vet said it would probably be much worse today, so he said we definitely did the right thing. He said he wanted to give Jupiter a little more time to have a bowel movement since the xrays indicate he will probably have a bowel movement soon (I guess where the stool was in the colon maybe?)….and since the stool seems soft, he doesn’t see a reason why Jupiter shouldn’t be able to pass it…… Although, he did say its possible that Jupiter wont have a bowel movement so he told us to keep an eye on Jupiter today and makes sure he has a bowel movement. Vet said Jupe should definitely have a bowel movement today…so if he doesn’t pass any stool by tonight… the vet said to give Jupiter another enema. He said give him 1/2 of the pet enema only if no bowel movement today.

If for some reason, Jupiter still doesn’t have a bowel movement by first thing tomorrow morning, he would want us to bring Jupe back in so they can do some enemas and get all that stool out. (but he said he doesn’t think this will be necessary because if we give him the enema tonight he should have a bowel movement just from the enema). Vet said within a few days he should be having regular bowel movements (because I asked if I give Jupe an enema and he passes only a little bit of stool…. How long should we wait for him to have another bowel movement without getting worried again) so if he passes stool tonight from enema, he should have another bowel movement within 48 hours after that and to call and let them know if not.

Since Jupiter vomited a LOT…so many times on Saturday after the enema, the vet said he wanted to give Jupiter some fluids to help with dehydration. The vet also said that if we give him an enema tonight… we can give him some cerenia 1-2 hours beforehand to help with the nausea and vomiting. I also asked about the really skinny pieces of stool since he normally has very wide pieces of stool (when we scoop the litter box its always easy to tell if hes had a bowel movement because his poop is much more wide then the other kitties). He said it could have been that Jupiter was constipated and had some small hard pieces of stool causing the straining without leaving anything in the litter box. He said the enema we gave Saturday probably helped pass that stool….. or that his stool could have been wider… but the enema may have broken it up on the outside causing the liquid stool and then the skinny pieces.

QUESTION ABOUT FLUIDS

:?: they gave Jupe fluids while he was there.... the fluids are leaking out.... is this normal? :?:

called the vet after posting that.

i called the vet since it still seems to be slowly leaking ... she said its okay and it can happen. she said it may still be leaking this long if his skin was so tight there before they put the fluids in? she should i could hold something on it with a little pressure to help it stop but she said it may still leak a little but should be done leaking by this evening.

Re: 3/31 Jupiter OT vet today update

I'm not very experienced with fluids, but I've heard that a little will leak out sometimes. It should stop as the hole from the needle closes up. His has stopped leaking by now, right? I know the vets like to use harpoon sized needles to give fluids (so they can give them more quickly) and that hole from the needle probably just didn't close all the way at first.

Re: 3/31 Jupiter OT vet today update

Its still slowly leaking... which is why i was concerned (more then 3 hrs after the fluids were given) and called them. But they said its okay...he got mad when i tried to hold something on it

Jamie

It's ok. I've never seen it leak that long but I use small needles compared to the vet. They use harpoons. As long as he's not bleeding, it's ok.

I'm glad you got in, got X-rays, and have a plan. Feel better soon, Jupe....and POOP!

Re: 3/31 Jupiter OT vet today update

jamie, i think you did the right thing by getting him examined further today. you can be reassured there's nothing more serious going on.

along with Inspector Crap Dash and Detective Poo, the ordinary residents of Lantus Land will be waiting for your next poo report.

JUPE POOP! / UPDATE #2

I forgot to post here earlier. Jupe pooped!!!

thank you all for the visits and vines...

and yes I think taking him to the vet today was for the best. They said he was VERY dehydrated and fluids were necessary. Vet said dehydration probably due to all the vomiting on saturday. Feel bad I didnt even notice any signs of dehydration - but glad he got fluids in him now.

I will still continue to monitor him...especially since the bowel movement today wasnt very much considering how much stool the xrays showed.

Re: 3/31 Jupiter OT vet today update #2

Hi Jamie,
We are very glad that all seems in order. I'm sure there will be more poop tomorrow (or tonight). Vines and more vines.
You did good today.

Hugs and scritches,

Ella & Rusty

Re: 3/31 Jupiter OT vet today update #2

There are instructions for 2 methods of checking dehydration in my signature link Secondary Monitoring Tools, along with some other assessments you may wish to make on occasion.

Anne, you about "bowl"ed me over with that post of a kitty on the pot! I'm positively flushed ...

Re: 3/31 Jupiter OT vet today update #2

Hi Jamie,

Glad you were able to the x-ray to check things out.

When I give Rex fluids he also leaks a little. I try to apply a small amount of pressure to help the hole close up.
But Rex has never bled. :)

Sending healing vines to Jupes!!!

~RR

POOR APPY TODAY

Thank you all for the vines. Jupiter is doing okay today but has a very very poor appy today. He only wants to eat whiskas temptations treats

and he has been going pee a LOT today. I assume from the fluids

Re: 3/31 Jupiter OT vet today update #2

Sending happy appy and good elimination vines for sweet Jupiter! I was just thinking of him today, as I was watching a video of a boxer pup running on the beach who didn't have any back legs. He didn't know! I am glad Jupe has such a great mamabean to care for him. Hope he improves and you get lots of extra snuggles.
