Leroy starts methylprednisolone to see if that helps with the coughing/lip smacking/swallowing issue. I requested liquid instead of the pill. I figured that a pill might irritate the problem area in the throat, even with a Pill Pocket. Plus Leroy has issues eating/swallowing semi-hard/hard treats so I didn't want to take a chance. The starting dose is 1 ml :shock: Getting ADD Leroy to hold still won't be easy ohmygod_smile Giving him 0.45 ml of the antibiotic was hard enough even with small squirts at a time @-) Of course, on the bright side, he completely forgets what just happened so there's no chasing him down for the next dose :lol: It's 1 ml SID for 10 days, then 0.5 ml SID for 1 week, then 0.25 ml SID for 1 week, and then 0.25 ml every other day SID for 1 week.

Has anyone used this steroid before? Can it be mixed in with a little gravy canned food to disguise the taste?
 
Hi guys .. I haven't ever used that medicine before so have no advice .. just will be keeping you guys in my thoughts that it all goes over easy and leroy doesn't mind the meds to much!
 
I used prednisolone (which I believe is the same thing as methylprednisolone). I used pills and I also tried an injectable liquid suspension. I never tried the oral liquid form. Is it a suspension or is a syrup? If it is a veterinary formulation, it may be flavoured. I always gave pred with food, so I can't see any problem with mixing it in with gravy. What is the concentration of the liquid?

Did the vet say that it is an oral (meant to be swallowed) medication, as opposed to a trans mucosal medication like Buprenorphine, which is meant to absorbed through the cheek pouch? If oral, you should be able to mix it with gravy.

You could taste it yourself :shock:
 
It's 8mg/ml. Not sure if it's a syrup or suspension (I'm looking at Leroy's online records right now). It says to give orally. I can check with the vet hopsital pharmacy when I go to pick up. Dr. B is also working today.

I didn't think to ask for an injectable ohmygod_smile But with Leroy having ADD and being wiggly, there would be no way I can inject 1ml into him in at once. At least with a liquid we can take a break after each little squirt.

Need to stock up on the gravy foods today. Maybe Ill get some baby food, too. I can make the baby food extra soupy, mix a dose of pred into that, and syringe the whole mixture into Leroy.
 
If it is a suspension, it will have directions to shake it up to mix it before using. The injectable pred was a weird milky suspension which had to be mixed. It was quite difficult to use. I used it for Emily, who absolutely could not be pilled.

8 mg is a decently high starting dose. Many vets start with 5 mg, but Bear Man took 15 mg. The protocol of starting high and tapering down is good.
 
Thanks, Linda :smile: So it's a suspension and Leroy has to swallow it. I gave the first dose mixed with some pouched gravy food and Leroy licked it all up :thumbup Of course, Emma had to get her own bowl of pouched food so she wouldn't try to eat out of Leroy's bowl.

Should I worry about bgs being affected by the steroid? nailbite_smile Or is that more of a problem for a cat eating dry food and is obese? I can test Leroy since he has those huge ears with lovely visible veins and capillaries :lol: I still have Squishy's stuff, just need to buy test strips and lancets.
 
I just want to say good luck with the pred. I hope it clears up what ever has been bothering Leroy. He is such a sweet hyper boy. Hugs to both of you.
 
I guess it is possible that the steroid will affect hs BG. Bear was on a high dose for a long time before he became diabetic. Teddy was on steroids for years and never became diabetic. Unless he becomes symptomatic, I would probably not go looking for trouble :shock:

I guess you're right. I'm just super paranoid about every little abnormal thing my pets have :oops: Fingers crossed for no FD-symptoms nailbite_smile
 
Fingers crossed here too for no extra worries about the steroids! I hope that cough/swallowing problem clears up.

I love hearing about your active little guy. What a little imp!
