Good Morning ~O) fellow sugarmamas & sugarpapas!

Today's the annual Easter-making bread for me! And a decadent Pecan Cheesecake Pie!!!! Lots of taste-testing going on here today!

Anyways, Gobbles woke up in his wonderful kissy & purry mood. He ate a medium breffis and preened; then he went down to the LB and left a pile of diarrhea. The pee in the litterbox was moderate. Other than the dang diarrhea, he seems good (I did, however, give him a T. of skim milk last night to "wash down" his Tylan capsule). I'll sneak some pumpkin in his food today and perhaps that will help his BMs.... I've notice more water-drinking; must be the Tylan makes him thirsty...or probably the diarrhea.....?

Re: 3/30 Gobbles AMPS 305

I'm glad Gobby is feeling good this morning, but sorry about the pile of unmentionable. I can't comment on the Tylan - did you ever get some of the FortiFlora hidden in the stinky food? Have a great day!

Re: 3/30 Gobbles AMPS 305

Bummer that Gobby is still having LB issues. Did you change his food when all this started with him? I'm wondering if he could be sensitive to something or other??? My three civvies all have digestive sensitivities. It's a LONG story, but I do seem to have them under control now (it' involves dry fuds, so not appropriate for Gobbles at all), but when they had issues, they always seemed perfectly fine except for their LB prezzies...they ate, were social and active, etc. It's just another thought, since Gobby is still having issues despite the meds.

Have fun baking. I do that tomorrow...giving carrot cake a whirl for the first time ever. I love to bake!

Re: 3/30 Gobbles AMPS 305

Hi Kat. Hope Gobbles diarrhea was a one time thing from the skim milk. Glad he is feeling good.

I can smell the bread and pecan cheesecake pie all the way down here in Texas. Have an extra piece of each for me tomorrow .

Have a great weekend and a Happy Easter.

Re: 3/30 Gobbles AMPS 305 +5 143 ? okay to give SARDINES ?

He's picking at his food and I'd like to get him to eat more plus "cover" the taste of pumpkin I mixed into it. I have a can of "Finest Brisling Sardines"--thinking maybe put a little of the oil over his food. Ingredients: Brisling Sardines, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Salt. Protein 14 gm, Sodium 300 mg, Carbs 0 mg, Cholesterol 50 mg, Fat 20 mg, (Vitamin A 6%, Calcium 30%, Iron 6%)--in an entire 3 oz. can. Anyone use this type of "lure" before? Know if its safe? I read somewhere online that "too much" olive oil can cause diarrhea in cats--I don't want that to happen because his BM is already very loose....

Re: 3/30 Gobbles AMPS 305 +5 143 ? okay to give SARDINES ?

Yes, diarrhea can cause dehydration so him drinking more would make sense. Put an ice cube in his water bowl to see if he can amuse himself for a few minutes :-D

He started to nib at the stinky/fortiflora, then did a 180 and walked out of the room....I'm trying to get him to eat a little pumpkin, but don't want to force feed him with it

Re: 3/30 Gobbles AMPS 305 +5 143 ? okay to give SARDINES ?

First, many many cats are lactose intolerant. I would not give a cat that is having GI issues any milk products.

If Gobbles won't go near FortiFlora, please try Pearls, which are small probiotic pills.

Beef and fish are two foods which many cats are allergic to. Unless Gobbles has eaten these foods without a problem in the past, at least for now, I would remove them from his diet. You will also need to read the cat food cans carefully. Many poultry varieties (e.g., Fancy Feast) actually have fish in them. Some cats have diarrhea as a result of eating these foods. I would also make very sure that you're avoiding anything with gluten.

This has been going on for over a week. When did your vet say to get in touch again?

Re: 3/30 Gobbles AMPS 305 +5 143 ? okay to give SARDINES ?

I find that the freeze dried treats, either given in chunks or sprinkled on food, tend to dry out Shadow's LB offering.
I often will see the treat in her stool. ( dried out spots)

It's what I crumble on her food these days to get her inspired to eat. ( Purebites Turkey -as she dislikes the chicken)
Maybe the Pearls and freeze dried would help get her to a normal consistency.

The vet prescribed Tylan on 3/28 and said to give it 2 weeks (if diarrhea gets worse, to call). He has his last dose of Cypro, Amforol & Metronidazole a.m. 3/28 (had one more day of each--vet said do not give him any of those anymore) and his first dose of Tylan p.m. 3/28. I was/am getting desperate with him; thence the milk yesterday p.m. because I gave him a Tylan (which I put in a capsule) and he would absolutely not drink water or eat anything and I was scared of it getting stuck in his throat; and will not squirt a little water in his mouth with a needleless syringe because I tried that with the Tylan (powder) yesterday and now is petrified of the syringe. Also, I buttered the capsule today. I gave him a little yogurt the other day. I gave him 1/2 tsp. 17% gravy with his Tylan capsule this morning. On top of all this, although he is eating, he isn't eating a lot at once. I probably open at least 7 different cans of food a day; all different flavors. I did get a few specks of fortiflora in him just now (mixed it into wet food, which he ate maybe 2 bites of). I seriously think his belly is bothering him, but do not want to give him pepcid (just another pill). He has been tortured enough. And on top of all this--I am getting some serious "crap" from DH. He is totally fed up with all the meds, food, vet trips, online orders and time I spend obsessing over all of it while at home and away from home, (including my trail cam) as well as time spent with Gobbles. This is not good; I shouldn't feel guilty about trying my very best to help my best friend :( I don't really know what to say.... :( :( Probably with re: to Gobbles' BM....just give him his Tylan, try to get him to eat pumpkin, fortiflora (package says :best by april 2013--think it's still good???) and wet food. He has been eating all the varieties before that he is eating now.....what more can I possibly do? To keep the boat from rocking, I would have to sneak to the local drugstore and buy pearls

I tried several of the freeze dried treats--he will not go near them. He will, however, eat raw or cooked chicken, hamburger and steak....

Thanks Frosty; oh gosh, I'll eat more than an extra piece of the Easter bread--I make one just for myself...and the pecan pie is divine; I will have an extra piece and blame the calories on you! Have a wonderful Easter :)

I don't know wt fudge is going on; I think I'm just feeding him too much...well, crap. (see my response to Sienne's post) I'm sure your carrot cake will be devine--!!!! Have a wonderful Easter :)

Re: 3/30 Gobbles AMPS 305 +5 143 +6 121

Sorry that DH feels so neglected. You might remind him that if he wasn't feeling well, you'd give him a similar amount of attention. You can also offer to set up the trail cam so we can all watch him the next time he has a GI flu!!

My concern is that if Gobbles isn't getting enough of the FortiFlora in him, it may not be doing much of anything. You really need to get about a packet of the stuff in him a day. That's why I was suggesting a pill since it's not dependent on how much Gobbles is eating.

Will Gobby eat allergy formula Pill Pockets? That may make it easier to get a pill down. Also, you don't need to follow-up a pill with liquid. Any food will do. If he'll reliably eat a treat (e.g., a piece of chicken, ham, etc.), that will help to make sure the pill doesn't get stuck.

I mentioned the "if you were sick" thing last week and his response? "He's just a cat"!!!! Needless to say, I was slightly livid.... he keeps saying "you told me he was getting better" (overall) since I've been telling him that since Gobbles' 11/17/12 dx. He thinks the trail cam thing is a little twisted, but my vet said that was a "great idea" (he's a fellow hunter; I'm hunting for BM....lol). How about if I put the fortiflora in a capsule (if he won't eat a whole packet)? Inasmuch as I don't like giving Gobbles pills (he absolutely hates it) I could try that though it will take a few capsules to get one whole packet into; either force it on him or, if I didn't feed him for a few hours, could tuck it into a piece of turkey (lunchmeat that has no sugar in it). Do you think it's a big deal that the packets have a "best by" date of 4/2013? I doubt he'd eat pill pockets... DH & I have to run up to the grocery store; maybe I'll bite the bullet and have him stop at Riteaid--hopefully, they sell Pearls (would that be in with vitamins or digestive aids???) I think I'll tell DH they are a "female product"--should get no questions asked...LOL!!! I always thought there was danger of a pill "getting lodged in the throat". I will give him a treat with his pill (if I have to stick the pill down his throat)....Thanks Sienne :)

have you tried a commercially prepared raw food?

Nature's Variety Instinct Raw Chicken provides a swift solution for loose stools with all of my kitties. it works much faster to correct a loose stool problem than any probiotic i've ever tried. i mix half a medallion in with some of their favorite canned food if they won't eat it by itself.
repeat until the problem is solved.

Re: 3/30 Gobbles AMPS 305 +5 143 +6 121 +8 179

I honestly don't know about not mixing the FortiFlora with food. That's what I've always done and it's what the vet suggested. Something like the Pearls may be small enough to tuck into a chunk of chicken, etc. so you don't have to force a pill down his throat.

As for DH, when a guy says something inane like, "It's just a cat." I remind him that most of us girls will comment about our male friends/partners by saying, "He's just a boy." Many of us rely on our cat's judgement as to the suitability of a partner.

Awesome! I just clicked on the link you provided and there is a mom & pop pet store just 5 miles from my house that sells it! They are closed for the weekend, unfortunately. I will get some for Gobbles on Monday. I did get up to RiteAid and bought a box of Pearls; I just gave him one about 1/2 hour ago...

I managed to get up to RiteAid and get the Pearls. I just gave him one about 1/2 hour ago (now I see why they're called Pearls...LOL)--very easy to administer. I had some hamburger thawed out and covered the pearl with it. LOL,,,I do rely on all 3 of my cat's judgement re: partner--he never owned a cat until he met me, and I did tell him that I had "cattage"--he does really care for the kitties (but draws a line) and all 3 of them seem to love him (the civvies hang on him and Gobbles will lay on his lap)...

Re: 3/30 Gobbles AMPS 305 +6 121 +8 179 ? pearls/fortiflora

Ok...since I got Gobbles the Pearls:

how many per day? for how long?
should I still TRY to get the fortiflora in him (a challenge; haven't been successful yet)?
how long do the Pearls take to work?

Re: 3/30 Gobbles AMPS 305 +6 121 +8 179 ? pearls/fortiflora

How lucky I am to have an oblivious DH ... doesn't pay one bit of attention to what comes in or out....
recently got 100 lbs of kitty litter delivered ( safflower seed) and he didn't blink an eye.

Hope the pearls you got make a difference.

You lucky chickie!!!! Mine was oblivious, for a while. But then he asked me how much $$ was in our checking account...yikes!!! If I hear one more peep out of him, I guess I'll have to get out the big guns and tell him "no bass boat"!!!! I DID say it was okay to buy a bass boat (so long as it is a pretty, sparkly metal-flake with a hog of an motor on it) but I COULD rescind that!!!

I would not give the FortiFlora and the Pearls. I would start with one Pearl per day.

Until his diarrhea is better. It can't create any problems although some cats can get constipated on a probiotic. Once things are better, I'd stop the Pearls.

I was trying to think of something to say in defense of the un-fairer sex.... I got nuthin'

Note to DH.... Dude. "Just a cat"??? First off, the deer / LB spy cam was an absolutely brilliant idea. A part of what makes your wife as special as she is is that she'd go to these lengths to care for him. Just like she might have to do for you some day. Just a cat? Sort of like somebody saying "It's just a BOAT". Yeah, the costs suck. And the time it might be taking away from other junk probably sucks. But Gobbles would be dead right now most likely if Kat had never found "this place". And a big part of your lives would be missing. Dude, you're making "us guys" look bad. The day could come really soon when Gobbles will be off insulin and life can get back to what it was "before". But really, it'll never be the same. Your lives have been changed forever by feline diabetes. But if you really sit back and think about it..... it's changed for the better. For Kat, for you, and especially for Gobbles.

"And that's all I have to say about that"

Re: 3/30 Gobbles PMPS 419 +4 353 $1,010 RAFFLE total!!!!!!!!

Wow, Carl! That was an absolutely stellar response!!! Gosh I wish I could voice that.... You are so on the money about my care for Gobbles. On top of everything, my heart still breaks for Gobbles. I am doing all that I can. Right now, it is more than just the shots & testing--he obviously has something underlying, due to the diarrhea and lack of appetite... That deer cam has given me an exact picture of his bowel habits, which is very helpful; I can basically gauge from the time he eats until the time he has a BM. This website? I do not know what I'd do without it. I could never give enough "back". And the true, caring friends that I've made? I often can feel others holding my hand through all this (it is scary) as well as feel rest assured and feel the cyber hugs given from others. Presently, I would like to get Gobbles back to the vet and get some tests run if his diarrhea doesn't clear up soon/by Monday. Thank you for your response; I am going to have a talk with DH tomorrow. I did tell him the other day that "I don't ask for much; just for $$ for my pets". Have a blessed Easter/Passover. I pray that Gobbles good health returns :-D
