Good morning every one!

This is the first morning I'm posting with Lances numbers. I started a SS on 2/27 after some of my first posts over in the main forum.
Home testing has really opened my eyes, and I couldnt be happier that we started. Lance too! I may be crazy, but I see him already feeling a bit better. @-)
I've been trying to stay up later to do evening reading on him, but I always end up falling asleep. - Not use to that!

Im still getting all of this figured out, but I am so glad I took that leap and did this. I cant tell you (and im sure a bunch of you understand) how stressed I use to be over blind shooting. Never knowing what was actually going on.

I look forward to continuing this trek to improved health for Lance. He really is my best buddy. I work from home, and although I have the other two "babies", he has been there for me through pretty much all of my young adult life and figuring things out. :-D He knows whats up!

Re: 3/3 Lance AMPS 257- First time on the Lantus boards!

Welcome to the board! I'm glad to hear that Lance is feeling better. He will improve with each passing day. The people on here are extremely knowledgeable, and will help you. Have a great day! :-D

Re: 3/3 Lance AMPS 257- First time on the Lantus boards!

Welcome Lance! My little kitty is Stella. We have been here for a year and a half. I had taken a hiatus from posting and started 'lurking' but honestly, the interaction is always best. :) You sound very enthusiastic. I am so happy you found FDMB.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Re: 3/3 Lance AMPS 257- First time on the Lantus boards!

Welcome to Lantus Land!!

Has Lance been on Lantus since 2007? You may want to put together a Profile so we don't all keep asking you the same questions about Lance over and over again!

Lances numbers are looking good. Like you noted, if you can bet a before bed test every night, that would help to fill out the picture. FWIW, many cats experience lower numbers at night so those tests can be important.

You may want to look over the starred, sticky notes at the top of the Board. They will help to familiarize you with this Board.

Please let us know how we can be of help.

Re: 3/3 Lance AMPS 257- First time on the Lantus boards!

Thank you for the warm welcome over to the lands of Lantus!
I am VERY enthusiastic, and was a lurker for some time. - I created a profile for him, but for kicks, here is his story in a nutshell:

The story behind Lance and his diabetes, as well as his life with me, is a strange one. He was diagnosed in 07' and when I received him in '09 he was still massively overweight. His paperwork stated at the time of diagnosis in '07 he was 22lbs. Then at the time I met him in early summer '09, hanging around 18lbs. He was on Vetsulin, I believe getting about 5 Units 2xs a day. As well as free eating kibbles with occasional wet prescription diet. (If my memory serves me correctly). The person who allowed me to take him was unable to afford his medication or food. Which was part of the reason they sought me out to surrender him to. I am known within my group or friends as the girl who adopts "problem" or "special needs" animals.

I quickly found these boards, and got to work.

I got him transisioned to FF, he was visiting my vet regularly, losing weight, and our dosage dropped to 2U 2x. Until 7/2010, I went on vacation with a boyfriend and left him in the care of my best friend who was use to caring for ALL of my animals. She was 16 at the time, and I think I trusted her a bit more than should have been allowed. 4 days into a 12 day long vacation in CO (I live in IL, and had driven to CO) I got a phone call that he was not moving, eating, anything. She had missed every single shot after I left. - I had him rushed into my exotics vet (whom I trust implicitly with my sugar gliders, and that week found I now trust him implicitly with my cats!).
We spent $2K on a hefty 5 day vet stay. (I came home early). He came home on all sorts of liver/ kidney medication. And went through 2 rounds of the Kidney meds. It was horrific. During his hospital stay, the techs and all the vets were blown away by what a fighter Lance is. I was reminded almost daily until I returned home, that he -might- pass. He was very weak, and they tube fed him nearly every day he was there. His first night home was messy and tearful, they gave him a few more months to live, at most a year. I set in for the worst, hoped for the best, and knew I'd love him no matter what, always.

My Exotics man, Who is now my main vet, put him on Lantus. For the first 2 months Lance was home, he was on 2U 2xs a day. We went back for subsequent visits every 4 weeks. My vet texted and phoned me often to give me to the second support, should it be needed. By November we were down to 1U. Everything coasted nicely, and Lance seemed to get stronger by the day! Christmas time had him running up and down hallways again, and singing songs out windows to birds. He even would venture out to the barn to feed the horses in the morning, sometimes  He seemed to have defied the prognosis given to him just a few months earlier.

Not everything can be golden though..
We lost our farm in April of 2011, and because of the uncertainty of our living situation, Lance had to return to the person he came from before me. I was heavily reluctant to do this. I offered to assist in the expense of his care, wanting to help make sure he did not end up back in the same condition I once upon a time received him in. I spent the next 16 months calling and emailing the person he was with, as well as visiting as often as I could. A 4 hour round trip was a lot, but I managed it every few months.

In early October 2012 (last fall) I got a phone call from the person keeping him. He asked if I could take Lance back, because he was causing major problems with he and his room mate. He had been to the vet, twice in the past 3 months. No diagnosable issue.. Lace had been marking, and throughout his stay had continued to get more antisocial and withdrawn. Despite our tight living quarters (My fiancee and I are -still- living in a very cramped 2 bedroom apartment, running 2 small businesses out of it, no less!) I said yes. I said we would compromise, we would make room. We did.

I brought him home, and he seemed abysmal. He hated me, it seemed. For nearly 2 weeks I struggled to get him to eat enough for what I knew to be "safe" to shoot him on. To top it off the person he had been with had him back on "cheetos" (dry kibbles). And for some reason he now hated ALL brands of safe/ approved wet food. He hissed and growled every time he saw anyone, and spent all of his time sitting in an old rocking chair with one of his old blankets on. Glaring into space, or sleeping. - Then, one morning I woke up and he was sitting at the end of the bed, where he use to sit and wait for me every morning. He slowly started to realize he was home, and really with me again. His demeanor changed entirely first back into the kitty I remembered, and continued into this sweet and loyal, and dare I say cuddly, older cat.

When I agreed to bring him here, I made a promise to him as well as a pact with myself. I was going to feed him the best I can afford, and as soon as I could spare the extra money, we were going to start home testing. This cat's story is far more complex than I can fit here. He is an amazing cat. He deserves the best I can do for him.

Like I said, he is my very best friend ;-)

Re: 3/3 Lance AMPS 257- First time on the Lantus boards!

Wow....that is quite a story!!! Welcome to Lantus Land.

With that +3....do you have any high carb gravy foods in the house? I would give him about a tablespoon and retest in half an hour to see if he rises. If he's still dropping give him a little more HC food. You don't want to give him too much at once, because you don't want him to get too full, in case you need him to eat more again in a hour. Ultimately, you want to see several non-food induced rising numbers in a row.

Unfortunately, I can't stay on line for long, though, so update the subject line of your first post showing that +3 number and asking for help. That way, others will see you need some guidance and will help you through.

Also, there is a sticky at the top of the board about how to handle low numbers. Here's the link:
Handling Low Numbers

You are in the best place for you and Lance!!!

Re: 3/3 Lance AMPS 257 +3 69 - First time on the Lantus boar

Thank you, We have done this and am now waiting for the retest time :)

That is a shockingly low number!

Re: 3/3 Lance AMPS 257 +3 69 - First time on the Lantus boar

I'm here and can stay with you for awhile.

I just read your story. Wow! I bet Lance is happy to be home with you again.

I would do like Amy said and give him a little high carb gravy food and let us know what the next test number is.

69 is not too low, but you want to watch it.

Re: 3/3 Lance AMPS 257 +3 69 - First time on the Lantus boar

Hi Dyana!
Offered him HC food about 15 minutes ago, and he ate happily. Have another 15ish minutes to go before the re-test.
Man, am I glad I work from home! :-D

Thank you so much for the help! His numbers have never been this low before (to my knowledge). I'm thinking maybe he needs a dose reduction? his numbers have been wavering near the 100's off and on. I saw a post somewhere yesterday saying that to shoot anything below 200 is sort of risky. :/ I'm so glad I am here on these forums.

Since beginning typing this message he has come and popped up next to me on the couch. He seems normal still. Im anxious to check him again! I think he knows! :-D

Re: 3/3 Lance AMPS 257 +3 69 - First time on the Lantus boar

We don't reduce numbers quite yet! The dilemma will be that Lance is a longer term diabetic and we make dose reductions a bit harder for those cats who have been diabetic for over a year. The flip side is because you're new to testing, no one has any way of knowing whether the dose is too big, too little, or just right.

Depending on when you last fed Lance, I might have given some thought to trying some low carb food first and seeing if that slowed his drop down. If not, at the next 30 min. interval, I would have given a bit of high carb food.

You may want to bookmark or print out this post on handling low numbers.

Re: 3/3 Lance AMPS 257 +3 69 - First time on the Lantus boar

Wow! What an inspiring story! I am so happy that you found each other, and that he is back "home" with you where he truly belongs. How wonderful of you to open your heart and home to a special needs kitty... I got a touch misty eyed reading your story. Welcome to Lantus Land, and congratulations on taking the next steps in Lance's treatment with home testing. You've found the best place in the world, peopled with beans (humans) who are just as dedicated to their kitties as you are. Just as Lance found his home with you, you have both found a home here with us.

Re: 3/3 Lance AMPS 257 +3 69 - First time on the Lantus boar

That's good. He's what we call surfing along (staying in the same range). 68 and 69 are normal non diabetic numbers and you want his numbers in this range as much as possible for his pancreas to heal. You just have to watch them (test more than usual) to make sure he doesn't go too low. I would feed him a bit of low carb food (about two teaspoons) and see if we can get him to keep surfing along.
Next test in 30 minutes, and please post the number. You're doing fine

Re: 3/3 Lance AMPS 257 +3 69 - First time on the Lantus boar

Absolutely will do! <3 I cant thank you enough for your help!

I know these are around the target numbers for optimum healing. Seeing them on the screen after such high numbers is very.. shocking!
He is still happy to accept another snack, and has selected a sheet of bubble wrap to knead and poke around on (his favorite).

I will re-test in another 30, and update!!

Re: 3/3 Lance AMPS 257 +3 69 - First time on the Lantus boar

I had to Google sugar gliders to remind me what they are. How cute :-D I want one. Do you still have them?

Re: 3/3 Lance AMPS 257 +3 69 - First time on the Lantus boar

No, unfortunately I do not. The 4 I had were rescues, and lived about 3 years after I adopted them. I would like another pair, or quad, when we move into a house again. Our 3 cats are pushing it as is :-D We make it work! I am a dedicated litter box cleaner.. ok, I am a dedicated housekeeper, period. Being able to be home almost 24/7 helps too. Needless to say we are all very very close! .. I like it like this, but I do miss having a house!

Re: 3/3 Lance AMPS 257 +3 69 - First time on the Lantus boar

Morning! I just wanted to say welcome to LL! what an incredible story - you two were meant for each other, and I am so glad he is back with you. Good luck with today - Quite the +3!

Re: 3/3 Lance AMPS 257 +3 69 - First time on the Lantus boar

That's a great range for a surf. Just give a bit of food every time you test. The more time Lance spends in these kind of numbers, the better!

FWIW, I'm sure he's done this a lot. You just weren't testing and didn't know.

Re: 3/3 Lance AMPS 257 +3 69 +5 121 1st time on board!

:D I bet you are right. I'll keep testing every 30ish and giving snacks. - Is there a "minimum safe number" That should he reach, I should ____________? (50 if im not mistaken).

He is, as of his last test at 121! So, this will be his +5 ;-)

Big sigh of relief!

So, this is what "normal" numbers look like! - is it normal to panic at first?!

Yes.

 It's normal to panic even after you've been here awhile, but once you get used to this whole FD dance, you start looking forward to and wishing for lower numbers like Lance's. Mid-high 60s are fabulous numbers and nothing to be concerned about. It starts to get "exciting" when you see low 50s and high 40s, though. Still, to this day, my heart quickens a bit... not out of fear, but joy!

yes! I can imagine. How exciting that will be, I hope we can get there and stay!

The amount of "thank yous", I can't even tell you! And what an amazing experience to have dove into this truly extraordinary group of people.
I dont think I could do this on my own. I am always so cautious, especially with him.

I look forward to tuning in here, for myself to benefit, and hopefully someday I will have earned my stripes enough to help out too!

We are at +6 148 :-D all seems well. Every kitty is napping, and Im posted back up at my desk! Onward! flip_cat

Re: 3/3 Lance AMPS 257 +3 69 - First time on the Lantus boar

You might want to get a +8. Sometimes, numbers can wobble around as higher carb food wears off.

What a story and what a first day in LL! Welcome!! You are in good company here.

Re: 3/3 Lance AMPS 257 +3 69 - First time on the Lantus boar

Hi again,

Great numbers today! (Don't forget to update your subject line).

I had written you a post earlier in the day and was wondering what happened to it. I just realized you have 2 posts for today's date! Did you realize that?

One of the things I had noted on the other post, was that it looks like Lance might have a +3.5 or so as a nadir and when you tested early today, his bg was low again so I think this is something to be aware of and keep checking both day and evening at about that time. You'll want to know Lance's usual nadir.

What a story poor Lance has! I'm so glad he's back with you.

Oh no! my apologies. I thought I had updated at my last post around +6, but I must have edited the wrong part or message. I went back and edited the original posts title!

his BG levels seem to be climbing still actually. We are +10 260. Thats the first time he has had HC food in a LONG time, and he has always been very sensitive to them

I am going to stay up as late as I can manage tonight (hopefully around midnight to 1am) and test him and see where we go! We will be shooting at 8pm, I will likely test him up to (and as well as) his PMPS.
Thankfully I will have much to keep me busy. I have a performance this coming saturday, and have some presentation pieces for the event's gallery that need finished.

Our PMPS is 377 - our highest number recorded yet.

Dinner has been fed, he was not very hungry. He ate about half as much as he usually does. He has been extremely playful all night though. Even more than usual!

Off we go to do our evening shot.

This day has been crazy!

What you are likely seeing is a bounce. When numbers drop fast or if they drop into ranges that are lower than what your cat is used to, the liver and pancreas react. They put out a stored form of glucose (glycogen) and counterregulatory hormone that function to cause a rise in BG. This is a protective mechanism and while annoying given the high numbers, it's a normal response.

Thank you Sienne and Gabby, I'll be adding that tidbit to my own e-notes. I started my own little note pad of tips, reminders and good info. So if for some reason my internet or power goes out I have a little handbook to look on!
I added some additional notes about today into his SS. for future references. That thing sure is handy!

I'll also be trying to stay up until midnight or maybe even later. My customs are all finished, so I have only my own pieces to work on all week until I present this coming weekend! This means I will have extra time to dedicate to Lance. I'll be very interested to see his late eve-early morning readings looks like!
