Well, well, well...looking who is trying to look normal for the vet. What Mr. Vet? I don't know why my mamabean is all like, what's up with my cat? My numbers are in the 100s. They're blue-tiful.

I do like that this will give him a little pad room for the inevitable vet stress BG spike. Maybe she'll just spike to 250, not 600. I assume if his BG does spike, just let him clear it instead of using any R? We have some family in town later today so he'll be hiding away upstairs anyway, I'd assume.

Anyway, send us your best vet vines. We sure can use them!

BLUEtiful AMPS! Supersized vetty vines coming your way. May he continue to surprise with his BG;s. :-D

Re: 3/29 Cobb AMPS 149 - headed to the vet

Sending prayers for a breakthrough for Cobb and a helpful vet visit. Nice numbers. Suzanne, you are doing very well with Cobb with all your efforts.

Re: 3/29 Cobb AMPS 149 - headed to the vet

Hi Suzanne,

Hope the vetty visit goes well and that Cobb's BG manages to settle back down to blue. Wishing Cobb another bluetiful day.

Re: 3/29 Cobb AMPS 149 - headed to the vet

adding my thoughts for a good visit - i suppose it's over by now, but i've only just gotten up!

by the way, another thought about Lev - it costs less than Lantus to buy, plus the dose on Lev is usually somewhere in the vicinity of 70% of the dose on Lantus.

enjoy your day with the family.

way to go this morning, Cobb! messing with your mama's head! you're The Boy! cat_pet_icon

Re: 3/29 Cobb AMPS 149 - vet update

OMG. Cobb is being a BAD boy. They are having to sedate him to do the exam and give him a rabies shot. We are highly not happy about that. But he has to have a rabies shot, so we don't have a choice about sedating him. She said whatever the old vet used as sedation was "curious" and that she doesn't use the same gas.

We talked to her in depth about which tests to run...

She wants to charge $138 for the acro test, $46.60 for the IAA, $7 for the blood draw and $77 for overnight shipping. She got very defensive when we asked her why such a markup but she said MSU just runs the test and doesn't interpret them. She said it was the "industry standard" and Burger King marks up a Coke by 200%. I wasn't questioning the charge, it was just more than I had expected...given I've done a lot of research and know what MSU charges.

So...we decided after talking in depth that, for now, we are going to test for IAA only and go from there. She said the acro test would just give us piece of mind, if we aren't going to do the SRT since that is the only treatment for it. And she wouldn't approach treatment any different if he had untreated acro. She said if IAA comes back negative then we can assume either acro or Cushings.

Cobb cannot handle a Cushings test, given what I've seen today. That blue number is ruined. Lol.

Anyway...we're now just waiting for her to do the exam and Cobb to wake up. She said the gas she uses should be in and out of his system.

Re: 3/29 Cobb AMPS 149 - vet update

fiesty little boy!

one time i had punkin at the vet and was testing him every 20 minutes because he was running low. we were in the waiting room and someone brought this big slobbery bull dog over to get weighed, right near us. i was interested to see that punkin's BGs were completely unaffected by it! ;-) that's my boy - i'm sure he looked at that dog and though "i can take him!" anyway, he never showed vet stress in his numbers, even though i know he didn't like to go.

it sounds like a reasonable plan. i don't think Cobb has Cushings - the hallmark feature of it is the incredibly fragile skin. if the iaa comes back negative, it's probably acro. although if you have some iaa, there still could be acro - some cats have both. but that does sound like a good plan to work with.

hope the rest of the visit goes well.

Re: 3/29 Cobb AMPS 149 - vet update

Thank Julie. We had a long discussion after the vet gave us the estimate. Hard decision, but I think it's the right one for now.

I'm not happy about the anesthesia..having given him a full dose this morning. And I'm not sure how cooperative he's going to be with ear testing after this.

Re: 3/29 Cobb AMPS 149 - vet update

perhaps a little treat would sooth his ruffled feathers - it's a good way to apologize to a kitty that likes his fuds! :-D

Re: 3/29 Cobb AMPS 149 - vet update

We are home. He is hiding under the bed.

Vet says he does need a dental at some point. He has two teeth that have holes in them...I don't remember the technical name, but if someone says it I can tell you if it is right. He has a little tartar. She said she doesn't think the dental condition is contributing to the high blood glucose. So we will discuss the dental after the test results come back.

No pancreatitis. She said she didn't feel any enlargement of his organs, so that's good. She said, except for the high BGs, he's healthy. And he's fiesty. She said since his energy level is so high, it's obvious we're doing something right.

She said she didn't think he would go too low from the unexpected anesthesia. But we'll see how he is later this evening and dose him accordingly.

Re: 3/29 Cobb AMPS 149 - vet update

he's probably got FORL - feline oral resorption lesions. they're surprisingly common.

i have felt like hiding under a bed a few times after coming home from medical appts, too. sympathy to our sweet cobb!

glad to hear she gave him a good exam and a good bill of health. woot!

Re: 3/29 Cobb AMPS 149 - vet update

Hi Suzanne, Glad to hear you are home.

Cobb wasn't too happy. It was probably a lot of stress for you today as well with the anesthesia and all.

The fact that he has a lot of energy and is feisty is a great clinical sign.

Re: 3/29 Cobb AMPS 149 - vet update

Glad he's home safe and sound and sending feel better vines.

Gosh I just can't figure out why some vets get so bent out of shape about stuff. You have obviously gone above and beyond what most CGs the vet sees will do for a diabetic kitty. She ought to give you a price cut just for that!

But I agree with Julie that this seems a reasonable approach. I hope he does well as he comes out of the anesthesia.

Re: 3/29 Cobb AMPS 149 - vet update

FORL definitely spikes numbers upward.
Some cats show signs of it when you scritch their jawline, upper or lower, and they make a chattering motion with their mouth. If the do, it indicates there is a lot of pain in their mouth. (ECID)
They get holes, and usually many cracks in various teeth . Some reabsorb into the gums. There is no cure. You just have to keep getting teeth removed as they succumb one by one.

Hope Cobb feels back to his normal self in a few hours.

Well, if Cobb spiked from vet stress he managed it fairly well. I'm going to let him rest overnight since today was so traumatic. I think he'll be okay.

Thanks for all the visits today!!

Hi there

Although it's a drag that Cobb had to be sedated for his check up and shots, it provided the opportunity for the vet to get a good look at his teeth and gums.
Keep in mind that in addition to the 2 bad teeth she saw, there could be further decay under the gum-line.

The effect of even one bad tooth should not be underestimated. Have a look at BKs ss.
On 10/23/2008 BK had a lump removed and biopsied. While he was under his vet took a good look at his teeth and saw a fragment of a broken molar, which she removed. His teeth and gums were in such a bad state that she recommended a veterinary dental specialist.

He was at his highest doses when that tooth fragment was removed, some 45u daily (total L and R) .
10/30/2008, one week later, I stopped using R.
11/03/2008 I gave my first BCS.
11/04/2008 BK got his first Lantus reduction.
11/23/2008 he had 2 cycles in a row with only blue and green.

12/08/2008 13u L, first major dental with the dental specialist. x-rays revealed further resorptive lesions under the gumline - he had about 8 teeth removed.
01/04/2009 he was down to 8u Lantus, no R and tasted HC for the first time
04/12/2009 he was down to 3u Lantus.

04/20/2009 red crept back into his ss and back up in dose he went -
05/25/2009 back up to 5.25u Lantus . . .
05/29/2009 back to the dentist for further extractions
10/23/2009 OTJ
He had yearly cleanings with his regular vet after he went OTJ until eventually a couple years ago all his remaining teeth were removed.

I'm sure that his spending his first 5 years as a stray on the streets and being FIV+ contributed, however without a doubt for BK bad teeth and gums turned out to be his Achilles heel.
