Good Morning fellow sugar-parents ~O) I woke up to a very kissy & purry sugar-boy! He ate about 3/4 cup of Friskies LC with a sprinkling of FortiFlora mixed in it. He pee'd moderately during the night. He had diarrhea (1x) w/soft poo at 6:40 this a.m. (prior BM was soft poo at 6:24 p.m. yesterday). Today will be Day 5 of Amforal & Metronidazole (his last dosing will be tomorrow, Day 6). If he still has diarrhea tomorrow, I'll call his vet, as the vet told me on Tuesday to call him if Gobbles still had diarrhea after his meds were all finished). I am going to give him pumpkin at his next feeding and hope that works to firm up his BM.....but do hope it doesn't make his diarrhea worse confused_cat

Re: 3/28 Gobbles AMPS 302

Morning Kat,

Pumpkin is apparently one of those magic foods, it helps with both constipation AND diarrhea. I hope it helps Mr. Gobbles  have a good day,

Kathie

Re: 3/28 Gobbles AMPS 302

Hmmm... try the pumpkin? I can't get Stella to eat it, but is sure seems like a miracle worker for most. Have a great day!

Re: 3/28 Gobbles AMPS 302

Good luck with pumpkin. Tarragon won't touch it but I know a lot of kitties love it. A kissy purry boy is the best way to start a day. Have a great day!!

Re: 3/28 Gobbles AMPS 302

Good luck with the pumpkin. At least Gobby is feeling great despite the puddin' poo. Have a great day, Kat!

Re: 3/28 Gobbles AMPS 302

@Amy, Melissa & Mary: I called the vet (I changed my mind and thought to call today instead of tomorrow in case the vet wants to prescribe more of the Metro and/or Amforol...Gobby only has enough left through tonight) and the tech said to hold up on the pumpkin till he calls me back this afternoon....Gobby is still in a great mood: he started doing something new this week--carrying a toy mouse in his mouth, then dropping it, meowing and wanting scritches for catching the mouse....very cute!

Re: 3/28 Gobbles AMPS 302

Gobbles must be feeling good inspite of the mushy poo to be so purry and playful.

I bought my raffle tickets!

Thanks Cathy! You were one of the first to respond to the "double your tickets" promo I'm running today! So you get double the tickets you've paid for; I will send you a confirmation of payment email here in a minute :) Thanks so much

Re: 3/28 Gobbles AMPS 302

Since Gobbles' dose reduction on 3/24 (from .75 to .50 U) AND since his emergency vet visit (where he was prescribed two A/B--Today is Day 5 of Amforal & Metronidazole) , Gobbles numbers have been somewhat high. I am wondering if the antibiotics are making his BG higher? (please note: I am not counting the 3/24 BG's as "somewhat high" because of the shed from the previous, higher dose -- .75 U.--).

Gobbles' PM shot today will be Cycle #10 since his dose reduction. I am going to give the dose decrease a few more cycles and hopefully he'll come down to lower numbers. Antibiotics can cause higher BG's, but I guess there's no way I can know for sure....LOL Any thoughts on A/B = elevated BG?

Re: 3/28 Gobbles AMPS 302 +5.5 289 ? A/B = elevated BG ?

I'm thinking that the higher BGs are from the underlying cause that he's on the ABs for, rather than from the meds themselves? And when the ABs get "that" under control, you'll see better numbers?

Re: 3/28 Gobbles AMPS 302 +5.5 289 ? A/B = elevated BG ?

Oh, I shoulda waited a couple more days to buy my tickets, lol!! Oh, well. So glad to see you're getting close to the goal. Maybe that little incentive will finish it off. Hope so! Thanks so much for a great fun-raiser!

Star has done a similar thing all his life--he gets a toy in his mouth, meows loudly (muffled by the toy, of course), and then brings it part way to me, drops it, and trots over for praise and a treat. I remind him he's supposed to bring the toy all the way to me, but he just grins because he knows I'll give him the treat anyway. I'm such a softie . . . No idea where he learned this--instinctive behavior? I'm just glad it isn't a dead mouse.

We do love our furbabies. Hope Gobbles turns the corner today on his treatment and doesn't need any more prescriptions. Sounds like sweet boy isn't letting his tummy troubles get him down. cat_pet_icon

Re: 3/28 Gobbles AMPS 302 +5.5 289 ? A/B = elevated BG ?

Gotta love Gobbles, glad he is feeling better despite lb issues & bg issues  Story to tell....Sabrina is an indoor kitty & a couple of years ago a mouse got in the house & we couldn't catch it :o One day DH comes up in the bedroom & spots Sabrina with something in her mouth...he gets closer & realizes it's a mouse tail...hanging out.....good, good, Sabrina cat_pet_icon for finally getting rid of it....NOT grr_red our fiercesome hunter had just been playing with the little critter & when DH startled her, out popped the mouse from her mouth...& it ran away  So much for the great hunter!!!!! We ended up setting a trap in the room & the next day got a two-for-one haha_smiley The mice really should stay in the fields!!!! I hope everyone enjoyed this little tale...(tail  ) Cindy & Sabrina

Re: 3/28 Gobbles AMPS 302 +5.5 289 ? A/B = elevated BG ?

Please remember the warning about the Amforol -- it should not be prescribed for more than 5 days.

If the diarrhea is persisting, you may need a fecal culture.

Antibiotics, unless in a sugar syrup, should not raise BG numbers. An infection, however, will raise numbers. Once the AB kicks in, numbers should come down.

Re: 3/28 Gobbles AMPS 302 +5.5 289 ? prescribed Tylan

Gobbles' vet advised to discontinue the cypro, amforol and metroz. He prescribed him tylan powder (1/16th tsp. 2x day for 2 weeks); he detected it in his food, and therefore I had to mix a little of it in a needle-less syringe with water and force it on him. Has anyone ever used it? Have any advice as to how I can get him to take it?

Re: 3/28 Gobbles AMPS 302 +5.5 289 ? prescribed Tylan

Never heard of it. Did you try to mix it in baby food chicken or turkey? Be sure the baby food has no broth, sugar, garlic s, onions, cornstarch. I use Beechnut.

Re: 3/28 Gobbles AMPS 302 +5.5 289 ? prescribed Tylan

It's tylosin powder and I think a few people here have used it.

Here's some info on tylosin. The link notes that the stuff has a pretty foul taste. You can check with your vet to see if there's a compounding pharmacy that could put it into capsules or find some other more palatable method of getting it into Gobby.

Re: 3/28 Gobbles AMPS 302 +5.5 289 ? prescribed Tylan

Same well wishes right back at you Kat & Gobbles! I hope things have been a bit easier for you today. I'm waiting to see what Mego's crazy body is going to decide to do tonight. I'm hoping for good surfing but you never can tell these days.

Re: 3/28 Gobbles PMPS 329 ? anyone used Tylan/Tylosin/Elanco

Ick, it has to be hard to get any cat to eat something that tastes nasty. cat(2)_steam I'm no expert, but I would try mixing it in something that is strongly flavored, like maybe a little oil from a can of tuna (packed in oil, natch). Or even put some tuna in the blender to puree it, mix in the medicine, and then feed with a syringe. Can't hurt, right? Good luck!

Re: 3/28 Gobbles PMPS 329 ? anyone used Tylan/Tylosin/Elanco

Hi guys,
Sorry that Gobbles is having problems. Did you try plain yogurt with active cultures? Sometimes these intestinal things can go on for a long time (in humans as well as in cats). But if there is an infection, that must be dealt with first. (And the yogurt will help the "good" bacteria to keep on doing their job while the "bad" bacteria are being killed off by the antibiotics.)

I'll have to check out the new raffle. Been short on time lately. I won a basket in the annual FDMB/DCIN raffle in January, so maybe my lucky streak will hold!

Thanks for visiting us. I hope that Gobbles improves very soon.

Thank you Sienne. I read through the link you provided me with :-D I will call the vet tomorrow to see if there is a compounder in my area.

I tried yogurt the other day (and he had diarrhea--but do not know if it was from yogurt or whatever infection/illness he has) and also fortiflora. So now I'm eliminating things. He had a bout of gardiasis about 5 years ago and if memory serves me, it was a nasty little bugger to get rid of.... From what I've read, tylan is good for diarrhea plus an antibiotic; I think maybe for now I may just stick to the Tylan a few days and see what that does... the problem is getting the Tylan in him; will try tuna and baby food tomorrow and also call vet to see if there is a compounder in the area.... The new raffle has some absolutely great prizes--18 in all! Tickets are being sold through April 7th.
