Beef was a successful add to the menu at Kat's Cat Kitchen. :p Paws crossed for you know what today or else I'm adding more pumpkin.

Healing thoughts to all of the sick kitties, and HAPPY CATURDAY! :woot: :bighug::bighug:

i remember starting once a food conversation with you, other people continued it but i was busy that time so couldn’t get in with my own questions :D we are cooking for Chico as well. for now we tried chicken, now we switched to turkey, i have the recipe for rabbit too. I use this recipes from Lisa. Now i am gathering recipes for other meats, what recipe do you use? What bone part from beef?

Hi Marina! It's great that you're following Dr. Pierson's recipe. She has inspired so many people, it's incredible.

Because Ruby has kidney issues, I cannot feed her anything with ground bones, so I'm sorry to not be helpful with your question. So far she eats turkey, bison, venison, and beef and she likes them all. I also have commercially made duck, rabbit and venison from Primal that I use as a topper sometimes to add some variety to textures, but I add that sparingly as that has bone in it. Since I've really just started to make Ruby's food in the last month or so, I'm keeping everything simple by buying ground boneless meat and adding EZ Complete from Food Fur Life as a supplement to complete the blend. EZ Complete has liver in it so there is no need for me to add it, but there is another supplement called Alnutrin that allows me to add my own liver should I decide to get more adventurous in the future. Instead of bone, these powdered mixes have calcium in the form of egg shells which has less phosphorus and therefore is better for her kidneys.

I love to cook and since the pandemic I've been spending more time in the kitchen than ever, so adding Ruby's food to my weekly and daily routine is a pleasure. :)

Ohh, thank you for sharing your experience. Chico has long term diarrhea so we are trying to improve it with novelty protein. I am struggling to find liver from the “novel meats”, using a supplement could help me with that. Gill recommended me on a while ago, it is available here so thanks for reminding me this is an option.
We are grinding the meat with a manual grinder (still didnt find the motivation to invest in an electric one) so to grind turkey has been much more challenging than chicken :D the supplement could help me with the bone sometimes, i like that :)

yeah, the pandemic reminded us all that the kitchen is not our enemy. My motivation to cook for Chico is to see his stool improve compared to when we fed him commercial foods and what is not less important he loves it :)

I started Ruby on this diet after a lot of nausea and inappetence with the commercial food. As her vets suspect IBD or small cell lymphoma, they suggested a diet change as a first course of action before biopsy or treatment to see if her GI symptoms improve. Aside from a few vomits that I know the cause of, her appetite has been perfect on the raw diet and she seems really energetic and happy. I also recently stopped all of the supplements I had been giving her before and started her on a course of pre/probiotics, digestive enzymes and powdered pumpkin and that seems to be working well so far.

In case you don't know it, Raw Feeding for IBD Kitties is a great site and has lots of tips for how to deal with diarrhea: https://www.rawfeedingforibdcats.org/feline-nutrition--health.html. I've learned nearly everything about how to deal with Ruby's GI issues from this site.

Yes, the supplement available in Europe is Fellini Complete. Better than tired arms from grinding bone! I don't have room or need for a grinder, but I might get one of those mini food choppers for when I add my own liver. The nice thing about living in NYC is access to Asian food markets where you can get many kinds of organ meats inexpensively, so I have a source when I need it!

Thank you for the site, i did not know about it. We suspect as well some form of IBD, we don’t have a test that would confirm though.
Asian markets- thats not a bad idea, there is a small vietnamese market in my city, maybe i can find there something more novel.

what about the pumpkin? I see a lot of people mentioning it for GI issues. Is it really the vegetable pumpkin? I guess i will read abt it on the site you suggested though...

Yes, it's the vegetable. Many people here use the canned version for their cats to add fiber, but Ruby doesn't like the taste so I found powdered pumpkin and I sprinkle it on her raw food mixed with water and she eats it up. I also like the fact that it has a lot of healthy vitamins. The IBD Kitties site actually says don't use pumpkin , but I've tried nearly everything else for her constipation. :)

Probiotics might be what Chico needs for his diarrhea, and S. boulardii is very popular among IBD cat caregivers. I'm sure you can find it in Europe. Here's more on probiotics and diarrhea on Tanya's CRF website: https://www.felinecrf.org/treatments_waste_products_regulation.htm#probiotics.

Oh we give him for around 2 months boulardi and lactobacilus. Thank you thank you thank you for all the links and information:bighug:

She said this is a recommended diet in case of GI issues... i started being skeptic to vets and dietary recommendations. For now we excluded skin to reduce fat but i intend to introduce some when his stool stabilizes.
That's interesting. Have you had Chico's B12 and folate levels checked with a blood test? Did the vet recommend B12 injections?

B12 was normal, folate was increased. All the other blood parameters were absolutely normal. She didnt like some thickening on the lymphatic nodes in the ultrasound. One month later though she didn’t see the thickening anymore. We didn’t repeat the folate test since the thickening wasn’t there anymore. Now our plan is to change the protein source until his stool normalizes. There was clear improvement since we started cooking for him, its just not where we want him to be yet.

Hope you’re able to find the right protein to resolve Chico’s stools, poor thing. I can’t feed rabbit to Ruby because all of the ground versions have bones, but so far I have been sure she’s never had bison and venison and she has done well with those. I have to have them shipped to me frozen so that is expensive but it seems worth it to me if it makes her feel good and she likes it. Have a great night, Marina!

I'm glad Ruby enjoyed her beef. Butters loves beef, too, but last time I fed it to her, her BG started going up. I still have a baggie of frozen beef food taking up space in my freezer though, so it might be time to try it again. Too bad I can't ship them to you!
Very nice cycle again. Whatever you're doing, keep doing it! She is looking great lately.

I have high hopes on rabbit, it is the next protein on the list after turkey. I agree with you about how nice it is to see them satisfied and energetic and no effort or expenses can beat that :)

I do remember this happening with Butters. I’m introducing it to her slowly as with all the proteins but so far she seems to be A-OK with the beef. :cat:
