And behold...the bounce. It's going to skew results for his first full testable cycle on 4.5 but I'm glad to have made the decrease. I'll also have staff try to get a ketone test today since I have a feeling it's going to be pinks, reds, and blacks all day.

What intervals would you all suggest the tests today? I feel like I had them over do it a little yesterday and would like to give him somewhat of a break.

Ahh, the inevitable bounce. At some point, they will get better. Good plan on the ketones testing today.

As far as BG testing, you can definitely get the staff to take it easy. When the +2 or +3 is so much higher than the preshot, it'll be a quiet cycle. Your call if you want them to get a test somewhere between now and PMPS. It will be more data gathering than anything else, but would be good to know whether he decided to start coming down at all.

At least this bounce is staying in the red (from what we can see)! Thanks for the testing advice. I think we will stop for now until PMPS. Tomorrow should really show what the 4.5 is doing. Will he earn another reduction of he falls below 100?
 
The reduction point is BG below 90, not 100. We'll have to see where he lands when he clears the current bounce. Normally we reduce by 0.25 units so the 0.5 reduction may or may not have been too much. Rusty will show you whether not it was the right move.

Also, when you reduce, the larger depot can influence from 4-6 cycles after a reduction. So it's more like the 4th cycle after a reduction when you can start to see what a dose can really do by itself. Which would be tomorrow. And you have to wait for the bounce to clear too and that can take up to 6 cycles. Last time Rusty took 4 cycles to clear a bounce. Good to see he's got some downward movement today.
 
Hi Mandi, I have been on/off the board this past month being well...busy... so I just noticed you as a new member. I just saw your thread today and decided to check out your condo. When I saw your name, I wanted to learn more about you and Rusty so I went to your initial post and discovered how you ended up here. As soon as I read about how Rusty's owner relinquished him, my heart just SANK and I cried. We have been though so much with our own diabetic kitty (also an orange tabby) who was also in DKA back at the end of November and it's SO HARD. I don't want to judge Rusty's former owner, but just acknowledge how difficult it is to have a kitty with this disease and to express my sadness for Rusty's situation. I'm so happy that you are trying to do all you can for him at the shelter and learn to manage his diabetes. It must be so difficult for the little guy to be given up from his home and then to deal with being sick on top of it. If I could reach through this computer right now and hug and cuddle Rusty I WOULD.

I am so touched by Rusty's story and if my husband would let me have another cat, I'd take him IN A HEARTBEAT! I really hope you can help get his FD under control and find him a loving home. I know there at a lot of people out there who have had FD kitties and would take another one in just because they know how special sugar kitties are and how much extra love and attention they need and there are a lot of caregivers who would gladly accept another sugar kitty. I hope and pray Rusty gets a second chance at a new home.

Will be following your story.

Got it :) Thanks for explaining that! 4.5 it is for now. This bounce, although it lasted the whole day, wasnt as severe as the one a few days ago so...progress? Lol. Got a neg ketone test so I even got to relax a little on my day off!

Oh my gosh, this post nearly made ME cry!! :bighug: Thank you Joanna, for your incredibly kind words. It really is a sad situation and being the amazing cat he is, I'm sure his previous owners must miss him very much. I'm thinking about calling them just to let them know he's doing okay and we are doing everything we can to make him comfortable, happy, and hopefully adopted soon! Ive only been immersed in the diabetes world for less than a month and its an incredibly complicated disease to understand and treat. Everyone on this board is just amazing, but I can't imagine how most of the people who are dealing with this on their own (or with the help of the many times unhelpful vets) are even able to cope! You're right, it's hard!

Rusty is a pretty special cat and is so tolerant and loving through it all. Being with him, even when I have to poke him, is a joy. If my husband wasn't allergic, he'd be home with me. If you hear of or know of anyone who'd be willing to take another sugar kitty, I would get in my car or on a plane to make it happen! I think with the switch to Lantus and the help of this board we will get his FD under control, it's my current life goal, lol. I would have thought my bleeding heart would have been drained already after 7 years as a Shelter Manager, but apparently not!

I think it's a great idea to call Rusty's previous owners and let them know how he is doing. I'm sure they think of him often and miss him dearly. I don't think that they gave him up without much consideration and I can only imagine how difficult of a decision it must have been. I'm absolutely sure they are heart broken. I can see that they did try to work with his condition and it appears that it was just too much for them. FD is not for the faint of heart pet owner and it requires a huge time commitment from the pet owner.

I love that it's your current goal to help Rusty with his FD. That's just wonderful and you are an amazing person to do the work you do. I am not sure how to adopt out a cat with FD. Maybe you could contact someone at the Diabetic Cats in Need (DCIN) organization and see if they have suggestions. I believe @Chris & China is a volunteer and maybe could offer some advice.

Wishing you all the luck in the world with Rusty. He is one lucky cat to have you on his side, Mandi! :bighug::bighug:

Prayers for our FDMB buddy Rusty that someone will take him to his next forever home. Thanks Chris for posting status.
 
I hope with all my heart that Rusty will get a good home. :bighug::bighug::bighug: If it was at all possible I'd take him but I live very far away in Eastern Canada, have three already including my FD boy and an expensive equine to maintain.
