Yesterday on Unbreakable Ruby Cat. :cat:

This morning as I was waking up there were post-LB zoomies. It sounded like galloping ponies were in the house. There was a hefty present left for me to clean. Ruby's BG was high. Scientific study completed: BMs lead to high BGs.

Healing thoughts for all of the sick kitties and hugs to you beans. Happy Tuesday! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Well glad you got that figured out! So, then, my next question in this study - do you think most of the blue numbers in her SS are poop-related? Would be very interesting if so!
Ha! That's a very good question! I actually don't know, as I never made the connection between BMs and BGs before. I think it's really influencing her numbers now because the poops are HUGE and far between since going on raw food. Pushing out that quantity must be stressful. I have to figure out how to make her more regular.

I really wonder. A coming poop really makes Pearl upset. I haven't noticed it affect her BG, but ECID. I do wonder if there is a correlation with Ruby, and even if some of her nausea might be related. If the pooping is that stressful for her, it makes sense the way I think about it.

Ruby used to sit in the litterbox. I haven't seen her do that in a while. I'm sure there's a connection between the constipation and the vomiting and nausea. Hoping that if I can solve the backend problem that the frontend will work better.

Yes, I am also wondering when she is nauseous, is her BG higher? I wonder if it is alllll connected with her.

Congratulations on your second drop below 50 :)
Do you cook her raw or it is a commercial brand?
Most of Ruby's food is homemade raw consisting of boneless meats mixed with EZ Complete. Occasionally I'll add some Primal premade raw for variety. I feed her Weruva foods as MC and HC as well.

Wow! Ruby keeps throwing you 40s here and there. I think she's trying to go "you know what." Anyway, I wanted to ask you about the food you make for Ruby. Do you just grind up meat that you buy at the grocery store and add EZ Complete? I just can't picture my cats eating raw food (at least not without a long trial period). We tried freeze-dried raw that was rehydrated before and every cat in the house vomited every time we gave it to them. But that's not the same as "home made." I keep sitting on the fence about this food-making
thing... I need to take the plunge.

Raw makes them poop less frequently and they do look a little different. Doesn't necessarily mean something is wrong.
Fibres can help, but they can effect the BG downwards.

I seriously had to think very hard about what BM was :oops::bookworm:

Ruby's definitely trying to prove a point and keeping me on my toes!

I started with Primal frozen raw duck, introducing it to her REALLY slowly, adding .25 ounces of raw to .75 ounces of her Weruva foods at first and then increasing the raw portion for about three weeks. I planned to do it for 4 weeks but we got to the point where she was only eating the raw and leaving the cooked in her bowl, so I figured it was time. I then bought ground turkey from Trader Joes and mixed it with EZ Complete and she loved it. After that I got ground bison from Whole Foods, and when she enjoyed that I placed larger orders of a variety of boneless frozen meats from Hare Today and Raw Feeding Miami. With the shipping, it winds up being just slightly more expensive than buying Weruva, but I figure feeding her better food is preferable to paying vet bills. I mix 1 or 2 lbs of meat at a time, freeze it portioned out in large silicone ice cube trays and thaw as needed. It takes me very little time. The only thing about the whole process I find daunting is keeping my kitchen clean so that the humans who live here don't get salmonella or E coli. I wear latex gloves when handling the food and bleach the heck out of everything. :)

I am seriously upset that I never thought to feed raw when my cats were younger or else we might never be where we are now with Ruby's multiple health issues. I never knew it could be so easy. You might want to get a sample of the EZ complete and give it a try over the freeze dried, which has on occasion made Ruby vomit as well. Ruby prefers the taste of the homemade over the prepared raw, which I use as a topper every once in a while because it contains bones and isn't good for her CKD.

I've been anxious about Ruby's raw food poops because she only goes once every 5 days and they are very large. Her BG goes up whenever I test her right afterwards so it's clearly very stressful for her. I am going to start adding a pinch of psyllium fiber to her meals to see if it helps.

BM is bowel movement. :) I didn't know what it meant either at first and English is my first language (though you Danes speak English better than most Americans)!

Just be careful, it can impact BG levels so start out with tiny amounts
Liver can soften it up a bit, but it would probably throw some nutrients of balance.

I figured that, but it took some thinking :D:oops:
I don't know witch Danes you've heard speak English, but if you ask me it sounds horrible. Like chop chop, or as the Swedish say, we speak Danish with a potato in our mouth. We speak English like that too :banghead:
I'm not speaking out loud unless it's an emergency :p

What's the EZ? Vitamins? Minerals? Supplement or instead of bone?

Too much calcium makes hard poop, and make the poops lighter in color, sometimes even white.

Do you know raw fed and nerdy?

EZ Complete made by Food Fur Life. It's a supplement that completes the boneless grind. I use it because they use eggshells for calcium instead of bone so the phosphorus levels are lower for Ruby's CKD and it contains liver so I don't need to add it. I might get some Alnutrin, another raw food completer that does not contain liver unlike EZ Complete, so I can add fresh liver to her food for her poops. The thought of chopping up raw liver isn't very fun to me :arghh: but I'll do it for Ruby. :cat:

I know Raw Fed and Nerdy and it's totally scary! :nailbiting::stop: I'm not quite ready for that level of detail yet. Maybe when I retire and have all of the time in the world to source all of the ingredients and mix.

I kinda wonder if that 115 today was a "high before the low". Nice numbers today.
fwiw, Butters has been almost all raw fed for the past six years, and yet she still wound up a diabetic with her myriad of health problems. I think there are so many other factors at play, just like for humans. Stress, environmental toxins, etc.
Have a good night.

They have an online class, pay what you can, and then you can make your own.
Mauer and the others are fed a commercial raw food. I have made it myself, and then Mauer got fat :nailbiting:
Not just fat, but seriously obese
So be aware of fat content :D
