AMPS=145, shot a skinny 0.20u

I guess yesterday was too good to last, today started off wonky. Harley woke me up at 4:30 am with a yowl and sprint around the house. This happened right after snacking on the remains of his dinner from last night. I followed him around the house until he sat still but then he did the head circling thing first counter-clockwise, then clockwise. (He's done this before and I've told my vet. She's not sure what it could be except that mild stroke or TIAA comes to mind. She did BP, hyper-T and a heart x-ray and at the time, the kidney values were fine.) I stayed with him, petted him and waited until he calmed down. I read a post on Health about a kitty doing something similar and another member said it could be an ear infection or vestibular disease. Something else to look into.

An hour later I took his AMPS and it was 145. I should have waited and retested but I shot a skinny 0.2u. At +2 he's already at 268. Looks like I'm re-learning how to shoot with him now. :?

His appetite seems to have fallen off a little after this morning's 4:30 a.m. scarf. He picked at 2 different kinds of Fancy Feast and meatloafed soon after. I'm picking up a new fluid bag after work today and some more baby chicken and turkey so he'll get another juice bar treatment tonight. Since I can't count on him getting his meds. in his food, I'll have to resort to mixing them in the baby food.

I stepped out last night to take out the trash and recycling and wouldn't you know it, that's when my regular vet called back. cat(2)_steam She left a long message indicating she'd been doing some reading on pancreatitis and FD and that she read about how prednisolone is used with good results for feline pancreatitis. She also looked into Levemir (she'd never heard of it until I told her) and said we could consider it once Harley is better. So it seems like she's trying to be open to learning new things. I wish it didn't take something like this to get her attention though. Both vets seem to agree that he might benefit form pred. If things don't get better, I'll have to restart it but it's got to be a different application than a pill.

Ah well, another day, another hairball.

Wishing everyone GD & GN!

Re: 3/22 Harley AMPS 145

Wow his AMPS was a lot lower this morning.
It sounds like he may have to go back on the pred for awhile.
I don't know what the head circling and yowling may be in Harley's case, but my 18 year old dog, 'lil D that passed in 2003 did that and it was an inner ear problem and infection. She also tilted her head sometimes and would get off balance. It was an ongoing problem.
Hoping Harley will feel better later today and eat well.
Can you grind up the pred with a pill grinder and put it in his food? None of my cats are cooperative with pilling. With Henry and the antibiotic and baby aspirin I ground them up and mixed in well with about a 1/2 teaspoon of food and he didn't seem to notice it or be suspicious, although any of the steroids are very bitter; I take Medrol for RA and it is very bitter if it melts even a little before you swallow it.
I hope both of you have a good day.

Looks like we're back on the roller coaster. Harley perked up a little this evening after he ate a jar of Gerber baby chicken. My mom says I'm spoiling him and she's probably right but I really have no other choice right now.

I'm not sure if prednisolone comes in any other form than pill and liquid, or how effective transdermal application would be. But it's a good question Judy. There is a local compounding pharmacy nearby and they do a lot of pet medications, I think I'll call and ask them about options tomorrow before talking to either vet again.

Both kits are staring at me with their "vasoline please" look, so I'll sign off now and wish everyone a good night! Thank you all for the love, healing light and good wishes!

I'd be interested in hearing what you find out about the Prednisolone. That is what my civie is now on and responding well too, but she HATES it. Would be nice if there was an easy way to give it to her. I imagine they can make it into chewy treats, but those are always a toss-up whether they'll actually eat them or not, especially once they catch on it doesn't taste *quite* as good as it ought to.

Baby food is a must IMO when needed. They should rename it Kitty Comfort Food or something, I mean really! My other civie has been tricked for years into thinking she likes her semi-daily pilling, b/c I started out with giving her baby food after every pill. Now I don't do it regularly, but years of pills later she still comes running, ever hopeful I guess.
