Re: 3/21 Simba AMBG 113 & VET UPDATE with questions...

So we just got back from the vet's.

She's happy with:
His lungs
His heart
His hydration
His ears - no more inflammation, has suggested we stop giving canaural drops (yay)

She would like to see him be on one drop of lantus every 24hrs at least. HOWEVER.....

she hadden't even looked at his values. She has no idea what his ups and downs have been like and when. She Has Access To His Chart. Her estimation that he should be on at least 1 drop per 24hrs is based on a generalization that his pancreas needs time for the beta cells to regenerate. I agree that his pancreas needs time to readjust and produce beta cells... but looking at his values, can we not deduce that that's exactly what his pancreas has been doing?

I'm pretty mad that she hadden't even looked at his values.

She also poo-pooed all foods other than the ones she sells in-house (ie: science diet and royal canin).

When I pressed the issue of 'why give him 1 drop of lantus if we'll just have to give him sugar afterwards' she said we could try giving no dose for a week and see how it goes.

What do you guys think?

Kind of sounds like what you are already doing, doesn't it? Although we hope after two weeks of no shooting the answer will be crystal clear.

Re: 3/21 Simba AMBG 113 & VET UPDATE with food question...

Thanks, yeah... I had to press her to give me that option though. ugh. I hate the indecisiveness. I've got 'teh indecisive' BIGTIME, I don't like my vet to have it too! lol.

incidentally, what do you guys think of Blue Buffalo Wilderness foods in terms of nutrition for diabetics? It's not on Janet and Binky's list, but it's low carb/high protein and seems to score pretty high here ... it's a little more expensive than merrick's, but it's grain free!

This is yet another case of my indecisiveness creeping in... do you guys think Blue Buffalo is as good an option as merrick's?

Best,
Sarah.

no input on the food...but darn glad your vet came off the fence on your side!!

happy day 1, you guys!

Re: 3/21 Simba AMBG 113 PMBG 74.. VET UPDATE with food quest

no insulin = no danger of hypo but wow! 74?? Simba, whatcha doooooin

Re: 3/21 Simba PMBG 74 ATrak VET UPDATE with food question?

All of the Blue Buffalo Wilderness varieties are 2% carb.

Did your vet even look at Simba's SS when you were there? I think her suggestions would be a lot more credible if they were based on data. But that's me. As for the food suggestions.... Why would she suggest that your cat eat by-products? (I was going to write something graphic but I restrained myself!) How about promising you'll listen to her if she looks at Simba's SS and reads Dr. Lisa's site?

Re: 3/21 Simba PMBG 74 ATrak VET UPDATE with food question?

lol. Srsly. Last time I was there, I'd printed some stuff out for her (like stuff from catinfo.org and some info about carbs) and she wouldn't even look at it, saying 'I've read tonnes of this stuff, do you know how much of this kind of literature I've seen'??

It really disappointed and aggravated me that she didn't even know what his dose was or what his numbers have been doing. My fault that I didn't print out his ss for her, but she has online access to it (not the one I post in my sig, but another one I keep updated just for her) and last time I was there she'd already printed it out for 'us'. This time it's like she didn't give a ... care.

More than anything she's confusing me. On the forums I hear 'let's see how he does with no dose' from people who care, and look at his ss... and from her I hear 'he needs at least 1 drop per 24hrs for his beta cells to regen' without even looking at his numbers... this from a woman who said she'd never moved in less than .50 increments. She's contradicting herself. I guess she's just trying to tell me whatever she thinks will make me happy.. but she's not making me happy, she's making me confuzzled!

Thanks for the info on blue buffalo, but... do you think it's as good as merrick's for cats with diabetes? I know a lot of people here use merrik's.. blue buffalo just happened to be the only one I recognized as being 'probably good' at the pet store. lol.

Though, is it possible his low value sans insulin tonight tells us he NEEDS a higher carb food? He was super playful and happy today until he hit about AM + 8.. then he looked like he felt a little icky and hunkered down on the bed. Which reminds me.. moar fudz! Lucky devil eats in bed now. I don't even eat in bed!!

Re: 3/21 Simba PMBG 74 ATrak VET UPDATE with food question?

hi sarah. congrats on beginning an OTJ trial!

i have zero input on the food you're asking about, but i did want to comment on why your vet *might* want simba to remain on insulin a bit longer. i haven't seen much written about this recently, but in the past it was common to continue with insulin therapy (using lantus) for at least two weeks before trying an OTJ trial. supposedly, it takes that much time for the beta cells to heal. i have a feeling this is where your vet is coming from.

btw, as far as the lower numbers simba is throwing sans insulin...
2 of my civvies regularly test in the low to mid-40s (human meter). i really wouldn't worry about a 79 on an alphatrak.

Re: 3/21 Simba PMBG 74 ATrak VET UPDATE with food question?

Sarah: I used to feed Gracie the Blue Wilderness foods...until she turned her nose up to them. And I wanted her to have a little higher carbs to stop her drops. So...if Simba will eat them, they are a decent food.

Re: 3/21 Simba PMBG 74 ATrak VET UPDATE with food question?

hiyas, thanks for your comments - he does seem to like the blue wilderness! I'm still mixing it with the recovery formula after my disaster trying to get him to eat DM, but I'm glad he's eating it.. as long as it's not what caused his yicky-feelings tonight at the lower number. I guess, like everything, it's irrational of me to expect a 'quick fix' when it comes to finding the right food and I gotta give him some good old fashioned T-I-M-E.

He's turned up his nose at friskies and fancy feast. I'll see how he does on this stuff for awhile.

Thanks everyone for your kind words, encouragement and advice! see you in the AM

(This bean's finally getting some sleep) :thumbup
