3/20 Post Have a good day, everyone. Edit: Has anyone ever seen nerve damage / neuropathy occur after insulin starts? Just wondering if Petey's sore back leg may be diabetes related. He's really not regulated so I imagine nerve damage is still possible.
Good question Laurie, curious to see the answer too. Is there a limp too or just the sensitive to the touch and more reserved behavior?
Limp too, he is slower to get up and takes care to sit just right with that leg out a little and I can see he puts most of his pressure on his left. I could see he was getting stiff so I figured arthritis and got the dasaquin. He has pretty much laid in front of the pellet stove all winter so I thought that didn't help... but curious if nerve damage is seen late in disease.
Here's a good picture of how he positions that rear right leg/foot... also that leg was always a little wonky since we got him, past injury maybe. It was like twisted a bit. Helps to chat this through till I can get him into the vet.
Awww...poor fella! I'm sorry he's having some discomfort, and I hope you get your answer soon so that you can help him feel better.
Hi Laurie, Oh my, he’s so beautiful. I’m sorry to hear he sounds like he’s feeling uncomfortable. Hoping the medication will help. I noticed that Ivy definitely got some neuropathy which I didn’t notice until after she had been on insulin for a few months. She still has some neuropathy I believe, but it doesn’t seem to stop her from getting around and it’s not debilitating for her. I was giving her Zobaline for quite a while and now I use Vitacost Vitamin B-12 Methylcobalamin -- 5000 mcg, which is recommended on this website for neuropathy. Hope you both have a calm and boring day
Poor little man. I guess old injuries will cause aches in cats as they age, just as they do in people. Whether it is diabetes-related or a touch of arthritis, I hope you can figure out how to make him as comfortable as possible. He really is a beautiful boy - just the sweetest little face
Oh Poor Petey, sounds like he's really trying to stay off that leg. Unfortunately, I don't know much about late onset but I can say that Binx's neuropathy presents in a "slippy" way - like he doesn't have the strength to hold himself up. It's gotten much better but he still defaults a lot to being stationary on his back hocks. I hope whatever it is gets better and he gains comfort again. He really is such a handsome guy!
Thank you I ordered some Zobaline the other day after searching some old posts here. Sounds like a miracle... The Gaba seems to be making him more comfy for the time being and it doesn't seem to be messing with his BG which is shocking cause it smells so sweet. They prescribed it when he was first diagnosed so I can't imagine it would be a sugar solution. I just hope it's nothing serious and I really miss the cuddles.
Hi Laurie! From my experience with Nestle I can tell you yes, neuropathy can develop after you start the insulin. With Nestle after his initial disgnosis and being on insulin roughly for a month or so he seemed to be getting worse. Mind you initially the vet prescribed Caninsulin so that didn't help. And Nestle was just all over the place. Up and down and up again. He seemed to be getting worse week by week. I first noticed when he tried to jump on the bed and didn't make it. Then slowly I started noticing other things. Eventually it got so bad he almost stopped walking completely and I thought it was the end. This whole time I was giving him vit B12 (sounds like the same one that Staci recommended) and with persistence and continuing his shots and everything else he managed to turn around. Today he's walking, running and jumping. He jumps on the counter again. So there's hope. Although I'm not sure if what Petey has is early neuropathy. Could be just as simple as he hurt his leg/paw somewhere. Or could be something completely different. Either way I hope you find out soon enough and help him get better. He's so handsome in this photo. As always. Have a safe night
Thank you Karolina, this helps a lot. I think we just had a perfect little storm and I'm hopeful his little sunshine comes out again, soon! Gotta get this numbers back down!
