Yesterday’s Condo for Oliver

Yesterday's recap:
410 - after his arrival and sniff around - 230pm EST
425 - pmps (6pm) - went with 3uL as marked on his vet folder notes
383 - +2
317 - +4
275 - +6
155 - amps - went with same 3uL
367 - +2 what??

Oliver seems to be doing fine, but he's just a huge lug and patrols the place like a mountain lion out for a stroll. Yes, he is like a lion and I am sure his size freaks out the girls, but he is very much a gentle giant. He took over a sleep spot I had made in front of the bedroom window that is high up and out of the way. Both the girls like it there off and on, so I am glad that Ollie found it on his own.

I will get something for the loose stool, but will give him a couple days to settle in. I'll see how he is today. I have to go out from +4 to +6, so I can catch a +4 test then maybe a late +6.

Food may be a problem until Oliver gets settled with his surroundings and his insulin.
What's mine is mine, and lady, what you have not eaten once I am done with mine...
is mine also! Thanks! :-D and have a nice day.
I am thinking he will help Shadoe lose some weight.

Re: 3/21 Oliver amps 155

Nice AMPS! but what happened? maybe still stressing.
hey I use to have to take my two kitties to my mom's for extended visits, and she has a kitty too, plus thru the years roommates with kitties, I did notice it generally takes about a week or so for them to settle down, a couple of days to realize - hey this isn't home, then off to the races!

Re: 3/21 Oliver amps 155

Oliver the lion king! I like that!! Good luck with those settling-in issues. The girls will get used to having this big guy around.

Re: 3/21 Oliver amps 155

In response to your, "what?" to the +1, you know it's a bounce, right?

I'm very curious to hear Oliver's story and see pictures. Given his size, is he part Maine Coon or Norwegian Forest Cat? His personality certainly sounds like it.

Re: 3/21 Oliver amps 155

I'm glad to hear he's settling himself in and on patrol. Regarding the sleeping spot, I saw an interesting thing--I think it was on PBS maybe?--about cats and time-sharing. The idea was they are territorial about lying or sleeping in certain spots, but in a time-related way. So they might feel a certain spot was theirs in the morning but not feel any attachment to it, or any worry if another cat moved in there, in the afternoon.

Re: 3/21 Oliver amps 155

LOL at the idea of Shadoe and Oliver conspiring. They're cats, I wouldn't put it past them. Nice AMPS. Maybe he's a late nadir kitty, it's too early to tell.

Sienne,
My first thought when I first saw Oliver in person was, OK he is half cat and half what else? Is this really just a cat or is it some wild animal?
Seriously his head is DOUBLE the size of Booboo, and with Shadoe's head near his, her head even looks small and I thought she was a decent sized cat.

He is curled up right now on a table that measures 12inch wide x 24inch long, and he fills it. Take note that I said he is curled up, not stretched out.

Sonia (and Tom) can vouch for his size, but I don't know breeds, so he could be part anything.

His gait is interesting to watch; he lumbers along slowly with his front paws looking like the toes point outward as with a ballet dancers odd way of stepping.
The diameter at the base of his tail has GOT to 3x that of Shadoe or Booboo.

He really is a gentle giant and while his name may be Oliver, I keep calling him Leo for some reason. I guess my brain just keeps thinking of a mountain lion and I connect it to Leo the Lion.

I am going out for a couple hours, so I'll catch Ollie's +4 and be back for a +6.

And yeah, I figured it could be a bounce, but I have no experience with bouncing kitties; Shadoe is flat like a ruler, so Oliver is going to keep me hopping if he is a bouncer! Could his dose be too high? What sort of indication do I get for a dose too high?

Re: 3/21 Oliver amps 155

You know, you can't help but call him Leo for a reason. It's obviously his real name. Oliver is just something someone else called him. We try never to name new pets right away, because the new name always comes naturally.

Tugger is on his third version of his name.

Boomer, our dog, came to us with the name Chewy. This is the very large dog who uses a plush Easter rabbit stuffie as a binky when he's sad. He doesn't own a single chew toy because he hates to chew. Instead, we named him Boomer because the first time someone knocked on the door after he came to live with us, he barked and it was SO LOUD in our cathedral ceiling'd living room that it just kind of BOOMed ;) Made hubby's friend nearly pee himself

The kitten is Echo because we noticed he uses sound to navigate (he had an eye infection when his eyes were still closed we think, the very expensive animal opthomologist said that is what caused his eyes to shrink up and into the sockets, said he was blind before his eyes ever opened) when he's lost he cries out and listens to how the sound bounces. There's one spot in our house where that doesn't work for some reason, so I have to go rescue him.

Bella was Bandita and it didn't suit her either. She is very much a Queen in training (*I* am the High Queen in this house and they grudgingly let me think that) Her eyes are mesmerizing and she's just so darned pretty, so we kept calling her Bella Girl and that is what she has stayed.

BB is Baby B...ahem-rhymes-with-witch because when she came to us as a tiny girl, and to this day, she *itches. A lot. Her vocal stylings have been compared to a duck on more than one occasion. But she leaves no doubt in your mind that she is complaining. Since I am the High Queen, that makes me the HBIC, so hubby named her Baby *itch ;)

Tux is a tuxedo boy. It was Tux or Hemorrhoid because he chose me as his person and has not left my rear end since that day. I guess I could have named him Pita too... but I was less creative then ;)

I agree.. if you can't help but call him Leo.. that's probably what his name is.. The animal shelter I got Nova from named her Serenity and she was there for 4 or 5 months.. If you've EVER read any of her condo's you know that is NOT an appropriate name for her :).

P.S. We need Leo pictures!

Re: 3/21 Oliver amps 155

I love reading your description of him...such imagery!

Wishing him some firm poo soon!

Re: 3/21 Oliver amps 155 +2~367 +4~398 +6~337

Sounds like the settling in is going well and that Oliver is happy that he
chose you to be his bean.
I am sure it will take a few days to get his numbers making some sense to you
and I have no doubts with your attention to details he will be on his way.

Re: 3/21 Oliver amps 155 +2~367 +4~398 +6~337

Lucy's name was Precious. I agree that she is precious, but within hours of getting her home I knew she was slapstick-comedy goofy so she became Lucy after Lucille Ball. I couldn't help it, and I can't imagine still trying to call her Precious. Sammy's name was Gray, but I called him Sammy when I saw him online, even before I met him.

Re: 3/21 Oliver amps 155 +2~367 +4~398 +6~337

I have taken tons of pictures and he does not seem to mind.

Re: 3/21 Oliver amps 155 +2~367 +4~398 +6~337

teeeheee heee!! he's so sweet! he looks really soft! is his fur soft? looks so velve-tee.

Re: 3/21 Oliver amps 155 +2~367 +4~398 +6~337

He definitely IS a big cat. Only saw him in the crate but the size of his face said it all!!
He is so sweet.

Re: 3/21 Oliver amps 155 +2~367 +4~398 +6~337

Oh you are going to have fun with him.
He is gorgeous and you know, Max might look small compared to him
and we know Max weighs 18.5 pounds.
That fur does look like velvet and I am sure with the love and attention he
will be getting form you that's what it will feel like.
Thanks for the pics.

Re: 3/21 Oliver amps 155 +2~367 +4~398 +6~337

Oliver has paws the size of a dog's, and as big as he is, frame wise, I think he feels gaunt and needs to be fattened up

He's also shedding a fair bit, likely due to the stress, but I can tell it's going to be a fabulous coat and I am brushing and combing him alot. Hair is all over but whatever

He will be all spiffed up and ready for parties in no time!

Re: 3/21 Oliver amps 155 +2~367 +4~398 +6~337

Oh man he's so cute.. he looks like a big harmless lug... is he a head bonker? he looks like one of those head bonkers that comes up for a loving nudge but because of his size almost knocks you over :).

Re: 3/21 Oliver amps 155 +2~367 +4~398 +6~337

OMG...he is gorgeous!!! I can't believe how comfortable he looks in his new home too.

Such a handsome boy!!!!!!

I honestly don't think Oliver could get more relaxed; he's settled right in.

Not much to say other then he likes food. No, he's not eating lots of it, but rather, he'll eat any of it. I am grateful that he likes it soupy, so we can get water into him. He's pacing himself well, but I don't know how the auto-feeder will work. I will have to get a 2nd one for him, and hope that he eats his food and then does not saunter over to Shadoe's feeder and cleans out her portion. Mind you, she has been gaining so she can afford to drop a few ounces.

He is still exploring and has tried to get into a few things that the others use. He squished into one of the small carpeted kitty towers, but got out pretty quickly - I am sure he got claustrophobic and had trouble breathing in there

I am glad he's sticking to his own LB, so I'll be able to see how he's improving on the stool dept.

That's it for now. He's great with testing and also his shots. He's sound asleep on a little rug remnant. I'll get a +3 and +6/bedtime test, but don't expect much other than his flat high pinks.

Gayle, he is absolutely gorgeous. What a super cat, and what a super new Mom he has.

I'm thinking you'll find his dose is too high. But it's good you are taking changes slowly.

I think that the first poem from T.S. Eliot's "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats" is appropriate:

"THE NAMING OF CATS

The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter.
It isn't just one of your holiday games;
You may think at first I'm as mad as a hatter
When I tell you, a cat must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES.
First of all, there's the name that the family use daily,
Such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo or James,
Such as Victor or Jonathan, George or Bill Bailey--
All of them sensible everyday names.
There are fancier names if you think they sound sweeter,
Some for the gentlemen, some for the dames:
Such as Plato, Admetus, Electra, Demeter--
But all of them sensible everyday names.
But I tell you, a cat needs a name that's particular,
A name that's peculiar, and more dignified,
Else how can he keep up his tail perpendicular,
Or spread out his whiskers, or cherish his pride?
Of names of this kind, I can give you a quorum,
Such as Munkustrap, Quaxo, or Coricopat,
Such as Bombalurina, or else Jellylorum--
Names that never belong to more than one cat.
But above and beyond there's still one name left over,
And that is the name that you never will guess;
The name that no human research can discover--
But THE CAT HIMSELF KNOWS, and will never confess.
When you notice a cat in profound meditation,
The reason, I tell you, is always the same:
His mind is engaged in a rapt contemplation
Of the thought, of the thought, of the thought of his name:
His ineffable effable
Effanineffable
Deep and inscrutable singular Name."

(From T.S. Eliot, "The Complete Poems and Plays: 1909-1950" (New York: Harcourt, Brace, 1952), p. 149)

Great photos of the giant cat!!

Gayle,

Claudia here! Oliver is smaller than my Pewter Boy who is also a short haired cat. And, he was smaller than Rusty who is about 75% Maine Coon. I found him very loving and gentle while I had him. He was a very good boy travel and while a guest in my friend's house. If she could, Nancy would have kept Oliver.

A note on Lantus dosing. Deborah had given him one unit of Lantus and so did I.

She had numbers
Wed PMPS 526 1u Lantus
Thur AMPS 430 1u Lantus
Thur PMPS 1u Lantus I didn't test Thursday night, just let him settle.
Fri AMPS 337 1 u Lantus

Given that progression and the fact that the shelter and previous foster home were not testing, it is possible his dose is way too high. In three cycles, he dropped the morning PS 200 points. He's not bouncing. My guess is he is rebounding.

You might try going back to either 1 u or even .5 for at least 4 days. I like to give a dose a week to settle in.

Gayle, not trying to be a know it all, but I have had 10 diabetics in the last 3 years. Three of them are in remission. None of my guys have used more than 2u of Lantus. The other thing is, being a human diabetic, I know what a low feels like as well as a high. Does not feel good:)

More than willing to help with dosing if I can.

Enjoy your beautiful lion boy. I thought he was a great boy. Sprawled out on my desk for a belly rub the first night.

Claudia
