Morning everybody. Well little Missy Kitty is hanging in there. She's not bouncing back though the way she usually does. Probably with good reason. I got a phone message from Doug yesterday that the urine culture that they collected when Tori was in the ER came back positive for Salmonella. So it may be that she didn't have pancreatitis at all. We knew her WBC was up and that she had an infection but it seems know that that is what made her so sick. So Tori has now survived her second bout of septicemia. Quite an accomplishment.

I have a call in to Doug to see where we go from here. He mentioned that the salmonella might have come from the raw food. Funny thing is though that she hasn't had any for at least except maybe a couple of nibbles that she stole from the boys. I have been feeding her wet since she started on her chemo for the Lymphoma. ALso I'm very meticulous about how I handle the raw food. I always thaw it out in the fridge and never have it sit out for more than a 1/2 hour tops. If it isn't eaten by that time it's thrown out. Anyway I just need to know if the antibiotics she's getting (Baytril and Flagyl) are appropriate and if they need to be continued for more than the 10 days they've been ordered for. I also want to ask about a different appetite stimulant for her. The Mirtazapine doesn't seem to do too much any more except make her vocal.

WCR- She still is very reluctant to eat for me. Breakfast continues to be the best meal of the day. Otherwise it's a real battle. She has totally given up on the liver shake. All I can say it's a good thing she only has 1 upper fang because I'm sure by now she would have done me an injury. I've been resorting to finger feeding her quite a bit. Today's 86 preshot is the best she's had. Mind you my daughter didn't leave out any food for the kitties last night.

I'm still waiting for the contractor and the insurance adjuster to come about the flood. They were supposed to come yesterday but then cancelled. They are supposed to come this afternoon.

SO that's it for now. Hopefully I'll know more this afternoon. WIll check in then. For now I need to cat nap. It wasn't a bad night at work but it was a long one. I've been so tired lately,

Have a good day everyone.

Re: 3/2 Tori AMPS 86 Samonella in Urine

Poor Tori! Glad you got to the bottom of it!

Check the dosage of Baytril being prescribed... high doses of Baytril have been linked to blindness in cats, so Bayer has a recommended maximum dose that you will want to make sure you aren't exceeding.
Link to Baytril Safety Recommendations

The relevant portion states:
Retinal Toxicity in Cats

It is well known that old quinolones, such as nalidixic acid, may affect the eye as a potential target organ (6). In this connection alteration of the lens or melanin-containing eye tissues (retina, iris, ciliary body) have been reported from human medicine.

As a matter of precaution Baytril therefore has been evaluated in ophthalmoscopic and histopathological studies on laboratory animals, dogs, and cats. Those toxicological studies with repeated administration of high doses did not reveal any evidence of unwanted effects on the eyes of the animals examined.

Sporadic reports of blindness in cats previously treated with Baytril, however, have been received mainly from the US in the last few years. In an additional safety study on cats Baytril was given over 3 weeks at different doses (5, 20, 50 mg/kg body weight) once daily. No adverse effects were observed in cats that received 5 mg Baytril per kg body weight. The administration of doses of 20 mg/kg body weight or greater caused salivation, vomition and depression and additionally resulted in mild to severe fundic lesions on ophthalmologic examination, changes in electroretinograms (including blindness) and diffuse light microscopic alterations.

It has therefore been recommended to treat cats with Baytril at daily doses not exceeding 5 mg/kg b.w., which is the officially registered dose in most countries of the world.

In contrast to cats there is no evidence that visual alterations can also occur in other species, e.g. dogs.

I too had a bout of salmonella several years ago, and it was indeed a miserable experience. Hope Tori is feeling better soon!

PS--Love how the vets always assume it is the raw!

Re: 3/2 Tori AMPS 86 Samonella in Urine

Thanks Christie. Tori is receiving 15mg of Baytril daily. She weighs 4.25KG or at least she did at the beginning of this latest illness. She was on Baytril the last time she was septic and had no problems with it. Doug is very cautious about using it but she wasn't responding to the Ampicillin. One of those instances were you have to weigh the benefits and the risks.

I know what you mean about the raw. Doug is actually pretty good about it compared to some vets. He was taught by a lady who has contributed to Dr Hodgkin's book (sorry can't remember Her name right now). She is a firm believer in the raw diet and I think DOug is too. He can't say a heck of a lot though as the owners of his practice are very against it. He has seen though how it has cured my Rocky's IBD and how it put Tori into remission for 2 years. He said "I can't argue with those results."

Re: 3/2 Tori AMPS 86 Samonella in Urine

I hear you on weighing the risks... a short course of Baytril did Willie wonders as well! You are so lucky to have a vet that is supportive of your raw diet choices!!

Re: 3/2 Tori AMPS 86 Samonella in Urine

Morning, and WOW. Quite the girl you have there. She just never ceases to amaze me.

I am glad that they have found out what the problem was, and can treat is effectively. I hope the eating thing gets better. I truly feel for all the beans that struggle with a kitty that just doesn't want to eat.

Wonderful amps this morning. GO TORI!!

Hey Tori - we have an OTJ party today - for Haley. it's in Alberta, so I hope you feel better and can come. I can picks you up - we got the tour bus today, and wait til you see all the renovations! Gots lots of fleece and stuff too so you'll be warm. See you later? ~~ Mannie

Tori never ceases to amaze.

I'd be less concerned about how you handled the raw food than the way the manufacturer handled it. It's one of the reasons I would grind my own food -- I knew how fresh the chicken was and how it had been handled and there would be no cross contamination from innards.

Re: 3/2 Tori AMPS 86 Samonella in Urine

wow...she such a little fighter! good to know it's cause, and treatment!
sending healing vines to her and daniel, and good rest vines to you, Barb...

Re: 3/2 Tori AMPS 86 Samonella in Urine

I know nothing about salmonella except how it makes humans feel (like they are dying LOL). Glad you caught this and have a plan for dealing with it. Give Tori a big hug. She is a real fighter! Awesome AMPS

Re: 3/2 Tori PMPS 221 -Samonella in Urine

All and all she's had a better day. She's eating a bit better. Not as much as I'd like but enough that I think I can forgo the finger feeding that both she and I hate so much. She seems a bit brighter as well. She doesn't look as sick as she did that's for sure.

I had a nice long chat with Dr. Doug. He's not totally convinced this was caused by her diet either. She's been eating mostly high quality wet food ever since she started chemo with FF and the occasional nibble of raw. It's kind of a mute point anyway. She has salmonella in her urine and was septic and that won't change. It does show the importance of getting a urine culture though and not just relying on the routine and micro.

Her treatment plan now is to continue the Baytril for 1 month total. The Flagyl will be stopped after the 10 day course. Her Prednisolone will continue at 2mg for 2 more weeks and then will go back up to the 5mg. We are going to try a new appetite stimulant as the Mirt isn't working very well- it makes her vocal and that's about it. Her chemo will be postponed for another 3 weeks. That will make it a couple of weeks late but we have to make sure that she is over this. I still can't get over what an incredibly strong and brave little girl I have. I mentioned to DOug that he should write a paper about her. He agreed that it would be a great read. I laughed and said the problem is that people probably wouldn't believe it. He agreed saying that is is hard to believe that she has survived everything that she has. My lottle miracle kitty.

The meeting with the insurance adjuster and contractor seemed to go really well. My claim is being accepted and hopefully work will start early next week. It will be so good to have a functioning bathroom again.

So that's all for tonight. My son had a meeting with his GP today. Hopefully he'll have more information about what the nephrologist thinks is going on. Daniel's doctor knows we like to know everything and not have things left up in the air. We'd rather know what they suspect than just be told I think you have something very rare. So I may have another long post for you tomorrow.

Have a good night everybody. Mannie picked Tori up for Haley's OTJ party. She was really looking forward to it. I hope she doesn't over do it though.
