thanks. sometimes it is. he wasnt good last night or this morning. doesnt evn want his food if it means the shot. first time i put the needle in, he jumped. im afraid hes going to jump midshot or that im going to stick him somewhere as he jumps. worry abt his eyes, too. finally i put him down in the floor with this food, and got shot in with no flinch.
i dont know how much of this is bc he feels bttr and CAN jump some now? hes only had this shot panic since hes been on lantus.

I hate to say it but Lantus stings like hell and some cats are more sensitive to it than others.
Where are you giving the shot? Why are you worried about his eyes?

been giving wherever i can. scruff or flank. where i give it doesnt matter. sometimes he doesnt mind at all. neck, shoulder.... he acts the same. hes afraid of the shot. its been taking 15 mins or so to get him to let me do it.
when hes trying to jump down and im holding a needle and trying to stop him...he could run into it. it could go in his eye if/when he jumps. pretty scary.

Ideas:
You could snuggle him under an arm while he's on a counter or shelf. Gracie thinks I'm just snuggling when I do that.
You could grasp him between your body and the arm of a couch.
You could kneel over around him and clamp with your knees.
You could burrito wrap him in a towel so he'd find it difficult to move.
- put a large bath towel on the floor
- set him down in the middle along the short dimension
- wrap the towel snugly around him
- give shot, treat, and release

Pam,
I noticed you said once you put him on the floor with his food you had no problem giving his shot. That's exactly how I shoot both of mine. As good as Autumn is about testing and shooting she'll fight me every time if I try to shoot while she's on the counter. And Cassanova would be impossible to shoot if he wasn't whiskers deep in his food because he's so nuts wanting to eat.
Perhaps just setting him on the floor with his food and giving his shot while he's eating is the key with him. If that's where he's use to eating that's going to be where he's the most comfortable. I know with my bunch if I try to feed any of them in a spot that isn't their normal spot they become suspicious that I'm trying to slip something past they like meds. And either refuse to eat or fight me to get down.

i had asked, can u reinject a syringe if u dont pull up enough lantus?
sorry mel, but he is hard on the floor.
he still doesnt want his food. hes still scared. takes time, but i dont have to worry abt him jumping down. its a lot harder on ME. kills my back, my knees, and i have to hunch over and try to see what im doing. oh well.

Then I have to wonder if he's hyper sensitive to the sting of Lantus. If he was good for the N. Now fights the Lantus. Both Musette and Autumn were. Both were nightmares to shoot on Lantus but didn't blink on Levemir. So he might also need an insulin change to one with a neutral base. Either Levemir or PZI.

oh, ok. ill see how this morning is. yea he jumped whn the shot went in last night so i think he got it all bt not sure. its much harder to give on the floor. i dont have the control i need and cant see or function as well, but its too dangerous/hard with him trying to jump.

I was originally taught to shoot while Alska was eating but then he was skittish about eating and I had problems bcuz of bad eyesight and knees. We ended up finding a small table in a quiet place in front of a window. Now he hops up there himself and I softly but firmly push him down. He is not good about shot but when he tries to move I push against him with my palm. Now I know that none of this may be possible for you and Larry but sometimes you can get ideas to try from parts of other experiences.

When I started giving KT shots, I put him on top of a short, narrow bookcase. This placed him completely against the wall on one side then my body against his other side. I then laid my arm from wrist to elbow down his back until he laid down - kept it there to tent/shoot. I then gave treats. If I give him food while I give shots, even treats, he fights me.
I always shoot Dakota while he's eating food or treats or he cringes. He doesn't react if he's eating. We started with him across my lap and slowly moved to the table. I was then able to start shooting wherever he was laying, just hand him 4 treats. Lately he comes running when he hears me get the insulin out and hops on the table again...
ECID! Just keep experimenting until you figure out what works for both of you!
