Yesterday--full update: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=115689

I went to visit Sushi this morning, and the overnight vet did some amazing things! He was able to drain about 200 ml more of the fluid from Sushi’s chest!! The vet also began treating him for congestive heart failure. He had an IV and something they put on his ear. Though it doesn’t sound like that’s what is going on to me, Sushi is really responding to the treatment. He was much more perky, and his breathing was quite improved. They said he was eating and drinking water (though from giving him his insulin, he was still quite dehydrated; I could barely pinch his skin).

Other than that we’re still just waiting on results of what kind of fluid is in his chest…

I'm really glad Sushi is feeling better. Please keep us posted on how he's doing.

Oh me too!! We're far from out if the woods yet...just hoping for the best & trying to prepare myself for the worst.
Thanks Sienne!

We are thinking positively and sending lots of vines to Sushi. I'm glad he's feeling better today and hope the vet can give you a diagnosis. Rusty has chronic congestion and sneezes and hacks up "gunk". He takes Standard Process Allerplex to help loosen up the gunk. But he dowsn't have the fluid that you describe.
Thinking of you. Thanks for the update.

Thank you all!! :YMHUG:

After waiting all day, I had to call (grr) and ask for an update on Sushi. It doesn't look like the test results came in today, so I guess we'll be waiting till tomorrow. I did find out that the IV has fluids & diuretics. Hes on 40% oxygen; there's a chance they might try weaning him off the oxygen tonight.
That's all I know for now.

I'm so glad you were able to get Sushi checked out. I didn't want to create any panic when I posted to you about ER, but I just lost my Sammy go contestive heart failure last week and what you were saying about Sushi sounded so similar to what he went through. Even though Sammy did eventually lose his battle, with treatment he did very well for quite a while. What they told me then was that if he could get through the initial crisis, then he had a good chance at a quality life (though probably a shorter life than I would want). That's exactly what happened, and we had some great bonus time together. I hope Sushi will be a miracle kitty too.

Oh Libby I'm so sorry to hear about your loss.
I definitely appreciate(d) your advice & concern!! Tell me more about Sammy--how long did he live after the bout with congestive heart failure? I'm just hoping I can have a few more weeks with Sushi; some bonus time like you said. ;-)
What kind of treatment did Sammy have?

Re: 3/19 - Sushi - Fluid in Chest; possible Cancer, FIP, etc

what I learned this week was that *where* the fluid is located and how quickly it comes back make a big difference. Sammy was first diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure two years ago, after he almost died during a dental. Before that, I did not know that he had a heart problem. His prognosis was dire, but my boy rallied and actually came home after just one night in the hospital! He came home with Lasix (diuretic) and 3 other meds.

Sammy lived for two years, but what I need to say is that apparently two years is very rare. At first the fluid was mostly in the lungs and Lasix was his lifesaver. This last time, he had fluid pretty much everywhere in the chest cavity (pleural effusion). After two years, his disease had progressed to the point where we wouldn't be able to stay ahead of the fluid buildup.

I hope you can have some extra time. Make it the best
