yucky dreams last night.
I always start doing this a week before surgeries for her.
It's going to be a hard week.
Just my overactive imagination.

What should I expect from the fast on her night before surgery?
She's still a diabetic.
I would think by morning her number could be in the 50's without any food. And anesthesia lowers it more.
The vet who does the surgeries here is the one who seems to know the "wrong" things about FD.
He always insists that Shadow eat dry food after teeth extractions... thinks they don't really chew the dry... they just swallow it
and that is less irritating to their gums.
He wanted her to have dry after her fangs were pulled ... didn't want wet food in her stitches...

I need to be prepared.

(((Rhiannon))) Sorry to hear about the yucky dreams; sending you peaceful vines, I know how hard it is not to worry.

I am sorry I don't have any answers to your questions. My vet doesn't ever make Kismet fast because of the diabetes, but I don't know about surgery. The reason they make them fast before surgery is so that there is nothing in their system in case of anesthesia induced nausea. What time is her surgery slated for? How long is she supposed to fast? Maybe Anne or Liz can shed some light here since Zener just had his dental.

Hi guys .. I'm sorry to hear about the yucky dreams .. dentals, or any surgeries are always so rough on us beans! Mocha had her upper canine teeth extracted .. along with 6 other teeth .. she did fine in the surgery and was eating by the time we got home .. ((hugs)) Easy dental thoughts headed your way shadow! have a great day guys!

Re: 3/19 Shadow ambg 105

It's still a very nice # for Shadow, though. I hope that your dream doesn't become a reality. You know and the folks on here know that dry food isn't ever good for a diabetic kitty. Stand your ground. You know what's best for your kitty since you're the one taking care of her. Hang in there Rhiannon. :YMHUG:

Re: 3/19 Shadow ambg 105

I'm sorry about your bad dreams. I hope you can have some peaceful thoughts before the dental and not worry so much. I'm praying for you and Shadow.

When Furball had her dental, I had to fast her. She gave me a 199 that morning and I skipped her shot. After the dental she had bounced up to 503. I was told the anesthesia would lower her BG, but she went the other way.

Re: 3/19 Shadow ambg 105

Very nice number for Shadow this morning. Sending you some calming vines - I hope it all goes smoothly. :YMHUG:

Re: 3/19 Shadow ambg 105

I can tell you not to stress out too much, but it won't matter because you'll still stress out. But you hear me telling you not to, so even if you stress out, you know that there are people here for you sending you hugs and understanding what you're going through and are there for you. So don't stress out, okay? :-D :-D :-D

Blow off the doctor. If you already know he's got the wrong thoughts, then try not to get upset when he tells you Shadow's "post op" instructions, etc. Just do what you know is best for Shadow.

(((hugs)))

Re: 3/19 Shadow ambg 105

Hi Rhiannon,
Since Shadow isn't getting any insulin, I don't think it will be dangerous for her to fast. My vet also says no food after midnight. As for the post-op food. Just give her the usual paté food with lots of water in it, or try a little all meat baby food (Beechnut Stage 1) and water.

Sending you good-dream vines for tonight!

Hugs & scritches,

Ella & Rusty

Adding my voice to the have good dreams tonight choir! I hope you have a good nights rest and that Shadow does too :-D

Re: 3/19 Shadow ambg 105

Me too - I'll be sending prayers for you and Shadow to have a simple and successful surgery that is. And you do what you know is best; you don't have to convert the vet first.

Re: 3/19 Shadow ambg 105

Don't worry.
I don't plan on following vets advise...
I know he doesn't know diddly about diabetes and what's good for her.

I am planning on printing Dr. Lisa's website about feeding cats ( having the local print shop do it for me) to give to him.

He's one of the co-owners of the practice and they sell Science diet....
you all know the type. I'd love to convince them to stop that.

He's done a great job on everything but the diabetes and I mostly see one of the new vets there who knows far more about FD.
She loved my compliment to her that I thought she knew the most at this office.

But he's the surgeon and I'm not the best at biting my tongue. ( imagine that? )

I just wondered how the fast would affect her overall.
My DGM is diabetic ( no insulin ever) and she "crashes" ( gets loopy ) easily because she forgets to eat. She starts shaking and can't think straight and
someone has to go shove food in front of her and say eat!
So I wondered if that kind of reaction was possible.

sorry no more tests today... I had dr appt this am and then ran off to work... and now my head is pounding and shadow is laying beside me....
sleeping.
Her dreaded dental is next tuesday. nailbite_smile
