Good morning!!! ~O) Woke up to a nice number today, and a lower .09 reading on his ketone meter. His litter box looked beautiful. :? (never in my life would I think I'd call a litterbox beautiful, but... it was).

He's acting normal, he's mad at me now because he hates when I give him his liquid Baytril..I feel bad doing it too, but he needs it. He takes subq's better.

Speaking of Subq's, I still dont think he absorbed them all from Saturday AM if thats possible. His upper abdomen and belly are shaved because of the ultrasound and his abdomen looks a little red, as though the subq fluids pooled there and gave him a bruise from the pressure. Maybe I over did it on the fluids the other morning? it doesnt hurt him when I touch it. But he's not acting thirsty or showing any signs of dehydration, so I am going to wait until I get home from work to see if I should give him more fluids.

He's eating his LC food very well.

Sandy  , thank you so much for putting Sasha's R guidelines together for me! You and Dyana are my R Queens! Awesome!!! :-D

Ok I will check in a couple of hours..

Everyone have a great day!!!!

Please keep an eye on that reddened area of skin on his abdomen. Note if it is getting larger or darker in colour. There may be a problem with the skin, such as an infection.

Hi Linda no, it looks like it's a little bruised from inside and exactly where the subq fluids were. I dont know if it was the weight of the fluids.. but I'm definitely keeping an eye on it.

I almost feel sorry for beans whose kitties go outside instead of using a LB. It's strangely satisfying to know just what the daily production is. OK, I think I may be slipping over the crazy line there.

Hi Tara-
Where exactly are you administering the subq's? After the subq's are given the kitties will often have a pouch somewhere. When Latte received a gigantic amount of fluids during her acute renal failure, she would get pouches on both sides of her shoulders, looking like a football player. Once fluids were decreased, she would have a pouch on the side I administered.

LOL Julie and Linda!!! If only you could see this gorgeous litterbox... oh man, I am losing it!!!

Carolyn, yes, he still has a pouch on his side but the last time I gave him fluids was on Saturday AM, I dont know if I gave him too much and stretched out the poor guys skin (If that's even possible) or if there's fluid still in there. It's like a baggy pouch on his side! He's acting fine though... :?

Re: 3/19 Sasha +11 326 AMPS 330

Hi Tasha-
I know you are in the middle of finding a new vet. I would really encourage you to let one of the vets you have been working with know that the pouch has not disappeared after 2 days. Fluids really should absorb w/in 24hrs.

Here is some really good information about subq's. It is geared towards cat's with CKD, but is also very applicable for other issues. http://www.felinecrf.org/subcutaneous_fluids.htm

Re: 3/19 Sasha +11 326 AMPS 330

I'm with Carolyn on this....he should not still have that pouch. I'm glad you've been cautious about giving more fluids. I've never had fluids sink to the abdomen. The reason is because a thin cats abdomen is usually higher than the back of the front paws or chest....and fluids usually fall to the lowest area if they are going to move. I suppose I could see them going to the abdomen if you gave them back further then the scruff area.

Please let us know......

Glad ketones are down and LB makes mom happy!

Re: 3/19 Sasha +11 326 AMPS 330

Hi Carolyn! I am in the middle of finding a new vet but I had the one who gives me the subq's check him out. He says its a wrinkle in his skin from losing so much weight in the past few weeks, its not fluids, thank God, and the only reason I can see it is because his belly was shaved in the ER. He told me just to go slow with the fluids, because he does need them to keep the ketones at bay, so I only gave him 50 mls today on his other side.. The vet was nice enough to not charge me. That is a great link you sent me..I just bookmarked it! Thank you! :-D

Re: 3/19 Sasha +11 326 AMPS 330

Wow! That is awesome you got him to the vet AND they did not charge?!?! :o

Did the vet suggest an appropriate daily amount based on Sasha's weight and condition?

I do not have experience with fluids for ketones specifically. I did give them to Latte for 4yrs for multiple other health issues. I always found smaller amounts, more frequently to be most effective.

Glad the link was helpful. The website has very reliable information on common treatments for ill cats, even if not ckd related.

Hope your night goes well, and tomorrow even better!
