Good morning!
Last night Quincy completed his 14th day without insulin with a very nice PMBG value of 86. The party started yesterday and continued long into the night. I wanted to stop by, though, and share my heartfelt thanks to the members of this board for their advice and moral support. Quincy is/was not only a steroid-induced diabetic, but is battling IBD and GI lymphoma. The latter has made treating Quincy’s diabetes tricky at times because of vomiting. But we did it! Almost 7 months after on Lantus BID, here we are with an OTJ party! I am so happy, grateful, and relieved. It doesn’t seem quite real yet. I think it’ll take a week or two of no testing before it sinks in that I don’t have a 12-hour leash anymore!
Like many if not most of the members of this forum, treating Quincy’s diabetes was both a big sacrifice and something I couldn’t imagine not doing. Early in the game, I lost my beautiful cat Cleo very suddenly to an aggressive form of cancer, and it made me all the more determined to provide Quincy with the best possible care. I feel so lucky to have had my efforts rewarded with a healthier cat. Switching Quincy’s diet and treating him with Lantus have really helped him, I just know it, and hopefully he’s in a stronger position now to keep his lymphoma at bay. I hope so!
Thanks again, everyone, for your encouragement. Perhaps more importantly, you have reminded me again and again of how powerful the human-animal bond can be and provided countless examples of selfless, touching devotion to one’s feline companions. I only wish more of the world was as caring and supportive, but hey, it’s a start! I will be sure to try and pay it forward.
I am running my first marathon, the LA marathon, this Sunday, and I’ll definitely have more spring in my step thinking about Quincy’s OTJ status, his party, and all the supportive people here! I’ll be sure to drop by afterwards and from time to time to give you an update on my little champion. And of course, if you don't see me around and want my input about something, like lymphoma, don't hesitate to send me a PM. I'm sure I'll be checking in still to see how Quincy's online kitty friends are doing!
Best,
