Okay, so I'm not sure what to think here. At AMPS, Bonk was off the scale again. So I figured he would be high all day, and I'll have no worries of him dropping low while I was at work. I test at +8 when I get home from work, and he's at 74! How do you have that much of a swing? I will admit one thing though, it's great finally seeing a green on his chart!

Chris, you asked me if I leave food out for him. My parents cat sit for me while I'm at work. Actually, I rent an apartment from them (not the best situation, but it saves me money while I'm saving up to buy my own place, and helps them out in their retirement.) Bonk and Faolan have run of the house though, so to answer your question Chris, my parents feed them during the day while I'm at work. Though, I don't think Bonk ate much until I got home today.

I understand Bonk was up and playing a lot today. Chasing Faolan back and forth across the house. I also understand he left a streak of poo across the living room carpet too. At least he had a bowel movement.

Re: 3/19 Bonk AMPS Hi +8 74?!?!?

hi Brian, wow that is a big drop? It seems like Bonk was bouncing from the blues and then broke the bounce. I know Lovey can drop a couple of hundred points after she has been bouncing from 400's to 100's. During a bounce clearing cycle, the numbers can go down quickly, more quickly than a normal cycle. But..

Keep an eye on the midcycle numbers in case Bonk will require a dose increase soon.

Re: 3/19 Bonk AMPS Hi +8 74?!?!?

it does look like he's diving and bouncing immediately. He's gotten so accustomed to the higher numbers that his body is reacting to the lower numbers. a cat can bounce from any range they aren't used to.

It does look like we're getting closer to a good dose. Often a cat was diabetic for a while before diagnosed, and Bonk may have gotten really used to high numbers. That phenomenon is called Glucose Toxicity. I can't remember if i've linked it for you before - it's on the "New to the Group" sticky, scroll down to the very bottom where there are a set of links on various single topics. It doesn't change what you do, but it *might* be interesting to you in understanding what's going on. Regardless of cause, we just continue up the dosing scale until his numbers come down. Most cats will get used to the green numbers once they've gotten there enough times.

It is a little disconcerting to have these high preshots followed by a dive. it makes it hard to trust the BGs enough to be able to leave him. Can your folks test him at all?

eta - by the way, now that he's seen green numbers we would slow down with the dose increases to see if he can get there again. We'll give him 10 cycles or so at this dose to see what happens.

Wow on that drop today. When a kitty is clearing a bounce, they can drop really fast. But that seems a bit extreme. I hope Bonk starts getting used to the lower numbers soon so he won't bounce so high.

Just out of curiosity, did you think to re-test? Sometime, it's a bad strip or bad test. However, that kind of drop is certainly possible. Gabby has gone from the 400s at pre-shot to the 40s (and gotten a dose reduction) and bounced back up to the 400s all within one cycle.

Okay, so I tested him again for +10, he's now up to 184. That's more in the range I would have expected.

Thanks Catherine, that is my take on it. Between the bounce breaking and his lack of eating, his numbers plummeted. Yes, I will have to keep a very close eye on his numbers, I really don't like him dropping that much, that fast. Because I know, it will just cause him to bounce again.

Thanks Julie, I found that link. I'll read through it a bit later tonight. I agree, it's disconcerting, I wasn't expecting it to drop so much today. It would help a lot if I could keep a regular flow of food into him. I keep working on it, but he want's to be Mr Picky! I did ask my parents about testing him while I was at work, let's just say I won't hold my breath waiting for that to happen.

It's already been 10 cycles on the current dosage, but I agree on waiting longer. I would think it best to let the bounces settle a bit before changing the dosage any.

Thanks Carla, it's a little too extreme for my liking. I guess Bonk figures, if he is going to do it, he's going to make it count.

Thanks Sienne, I did not even think to retest. You are correct, I should have come back a few minutes later and retook the test. Oh well, too late now. He did shoot up over 100 points in two hours though, but he also got quite a bit more food into his system, which I'm sure also has an effect.

My goodness...that's definitely one way to break a bounce! :o

Jersey is a really bouncy cat, too. I think the most she has dropped is about 400 points in a cycle (although we're still newbies with Lantus). I can definitely relate to your frustration, confusion, and concern about the numbers. I hope Bonk's numbers settle down for you a bit; it's so hard to deal with the drastic swings. If they would just do what we want them to do, all would be well. Stupid cats just won't listen..... :-D

I'm glad Bonk's feeling well!
