Just learned my Little Buddy most likely has amyloidosis. Does not sound good. Kidney friendly diet is low protein. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Vet is researching.... Food question.. How is K/D for Slashy?

If he dies it will be our 3rd in less than a year..my heart is breaking.

Hi there

Sorry to read about this. I know next to nothing about this condition but in a few seconds found this site http://www.vetinfo.com/feline-renal-amyloidosis.html

What I'd want to know before changing anything is whether in fact it would be helpful to lower the protein levels in Slashy's diet. Because if you lower the levels too much, his muscles won't get enough protein and can atrophy. I know that Dr Lisa really doesn't like KD and I'd think that there are likely healthier ways to approach Slashy's diet. If you can afford a telephone consult, you may want to email her.

Good luck!!!

Jen

Where was the amyloidosis found? Renal, hepatic, other? It may make a difference in what you do.

Also, some general reading from the Merck Veterinary Manual: here
and here

I suspect that Dr Pierson's recommendationsfor renal disease may be appropriate - it looks like the cat can lose too much protein through the kidneys, so restriction may not be the answer.
