3/15 Doodle still in the ER

Last nights update was ultrasound and xray were unremarkable other than lots of fluid. They drained 175ml and sent out to be looked at. The ER vet did a slide of the fluid and said it seems to be bacteria not cancer. Which several people including the ER vet seemed surprised cause that is usually from a wound (which Doodle does not have). His RBC and WBC were ok, WBC were slightly elevated but not significantly. He has no fever, neurological exam was fine, his abdomen was fine to touch. The only thing the vet said was it was hard to aspirate the fluid because his skin was thick/fatty? so it was not all removed. His BG was 199 at 10:30 last night. Vet was not sure if they were going to give insulin since it was not terribly high. At that point he had not been offered food but they were going to maybe try.

Anxiously waiting for them to call with an update.

Unfortunately I missed Mikey's insulin dose yesterday morning because we took Doodle to the ER so Mikey was 120 at PMPS. Guess he still needs insulin!
 
Bacteria can be treated, fortunately!

120 mg/dL is right on the edge of normal glucose. You might try feeding Mikey a little, then re-checking in 2 hours to see if it goes down any.
 
Sending more prayers for Doodle....kitties do sometimes come down with mystery infections, and hopefully an AB will clear up whatever is gong on with Doodle!
 
We hope that Doodle will be fine very soon and we are sending lots of good thoughts for Doodle to make a complete recovery from this "mystery" affliction.

Jennifer, I'd ask about his heart possibly being the cause of that fluid. I'd also ask what the vet thinks the chances are that the fluid will return even though you've had it aspirated.
 
The ER vet yesterday said it doesn't seem to be heart related but he was not 100% sure. Basically waiting for results of fluid to determine anything else. He did say he probably will need to see the cardioologist to truly verify heart related or not. I have a few questions, I will add about the fluid returning but it seems they are not saying anything until the results of the fluid biopsy.
 
i just wanted to bring it up because it's my understanding that once you've got a big fluid build-up like that, even if it's removed it will return. I don't want to alarm you, but i think it's a question that's important & you'd want to explore. I hope I'm wrong on that.
 
I had a civvie,Farrall, who developed a similar problem. No bacteria were detected in her, so it is somewhat different from your situation. The fluid did return very quickly and continued causing breathing problems. Draining it continuously would disrupt the electrolyte (mineral) balances to unsurvivable levels. I helped her go to the Bridge.
 
If he has congestive heart failure, the fluids will return but they could give him lasix to help absorb the fluids as long as his kidneys are functioning well. I had a kitty with CHF and she could take lasix at first but she was 21 and she started having kidney issues so they had to drain the fluids....they came back and the more often you drain, the faster they can come back.

If it's bacterial, it's a much better scenario. I would still ask if giving him lasix would help get the rest of it but be sure his kidneys are 100% and that he doesn't have any labs which indicate early onset CKD. While lasix can be given to a cat with CKD, it's really got to be done extremely cautiously as you can't really chance further dehydrating the kidneys unless the heart condition is really significant. It's a balancing scenario.

Tidus had fluid build up due to heart issues but I'm pretty sure this is not the same and the vet really didn't seem to think it was heart related but not yet ruled out. Just can't figure out where it would come from if it's bacterial. The vet was pretty certain it was cancer until he looked at the slide sample and cancer was not obvious. Hoping for better news tomorrow.
