T.G.I.F. and Happy National Sleep Day and Happy Pi Day! (I think this means we should sleep and eat pie all day!!!) :-D

WCR: All Ps in place. I got snuggles last night and this morning...it was wonderful!!! :-D I still don't feel like she's 100% herself. Which brings me to my question regarding Potassium supplements...can I give her too much K? When I took her in to get blood work done, the vet tech told me that I shouldn't worry if the dose is a bit much for her because her body will only use what it needs and will expel what she doesn't (in essence, what the body does with B12/zobaline). I know I read on Tanya's page that too much K is just as bad/deadly as too little...but does that refer to supplements, as well? I don't want to assume to know how all supplements work. Otherwise, appy was ok this morning...she's a little high in BG because I think I left out a little too much fud when we went to bed. We did have a little play time this morning and she has already peed and pooped (and left a little on herself which meant I had to help clean it off...not a happy kitty :-x ).

Hope everyone has a great Friday. Sending healthy vines to all our sugar kitties and their hoomins! Blessings!

Come on down Shasta! I have no idea on the K. I know you will get some good info though. Yay for snuggles. Staying in bed and eating pi sounds much better than tbp. Have a great day Deborah!

Sorry you had to help Shasta get cleaned up. I hope she slid down for you today. Next year's Pi Day will be even more special: 3.14.15.

Re: 3/14 Shasta AMPS=291 +1=243 +1.5=254

Sienne says that it's very important to have the right potassium dose and too much can be very dangerous. i don't have personal experience with it myself.

how much are you giving?

Re: 3/14 Shasta AMPS=291 +1=243 +1.5=254

Pardon me for being blunt, but the vet tech is an idiot. This is not the kind of supplementation that if a little is good, a lot is better. Too much potassium will cause diarrhea, throw electrolytes out of whack, and potentially cause cardiac problems. This is the link on Wikipedia for hyperkalemia. Sodium and potassium need to be in balance for the muscles to work and for there to be proper nervous system functioning. Too much K effects the level of Na and basically causes a mess. A potassium supplement is still potassium. I would not give any more than what the vet prescribed and I'd talk to the vet regarding the instructions the tech gave you.

Re: 3/14 Shasta AMPS=291 +1=243 +1.5=254

Ditto what Sienne said. Too much potassium is NOT good. If you get those electrolyte imbalances, it can make her extremely ill to the point of needing hospitalization.

Thank you, Melissa, Carla, Julie, Sienne & Marje for checking in on us today and for answering my question. Sienne - I have to laugh at your frankness, because I was thinking the same thing as soon as the vet tech said it. The vet prescribed 1 PotassiTab per day (1/2 morning, 1/2 evening), but no mention of wanting to get her back in for follow-up blood work to make sure her levels are better. We started her on the supplements back in August, but since he didn't seem concerned about getting her back in for follow up BW, I got nervous and backed her down on the supplements (she was at 3.5 on the K range). She registered a 2.6 at the beginning of March, so I definitely have her at 1 tablet per day now. I just hate not knowing how the supplements are working for her. Are they just enough, too little, too much?! UGH! My crystal ball has been in the shop for way too long. Time to get it fixed so that I can know what's going on with my girl.

Speaking of my girl, I think it's our bedtime. Hoping to get some more snuggles tonight. My back has been bothering me lately. It's been a year since blowing out my back and I'd prefer not to spend my soon-to-be spring break the same way I spent it last year...at doctor's offices. However, tomorrow I am painting my front door and putting the final coat on the back door and running errands and trying to get some stuff done for my students. Yay for weekends. Sleep well my friends...I must go coax my cat out of her carrier in hopes of snuggles.
