Hello.
Looks like we're back... I hope our stay will be short.
Shadow isn't holding in the good numbers anymore.

vet is calling in a solastar pen ... found a pharmacy in a nearby town that had one left out of a pack. Paws crossed that we don't need more than that.

I also am penciled in for a dental for Shadow on tuesday, March 26. (first available slot)
She does have some tartar buildup and I sure am hoping that her numbers rising might be from her odontoclastic resorptive lesion condition.
It's been a year since her fangs were pulled so she could very well have some new teeth cracking....
cats with resportive lesions tend to have all their teeth affected over time....
only way to know for sure is to have x-rays ....

So I guess tonite should be our first shot.... I had hoped to wait until after the surgery.... but she seems to be creeping up a little each day....
don't know what dose to start....

sure wish I could have slept last night... but I worried instead...

i wish they could get her in for the dental now.... so I could wait....
shadow does not deal with fasting well at all....

Not bad but creeping ever so slightly the wrong way.

Boy don't know about the dose for this case, but it seems like you don't want to let it get too far along.

Have you ever checked the effects of food? Tried even lower carb?

Hopefully the dental will help. Chip had to start up again so I know the feeling all too well.

You have the dental in less than 2 weeks, and you don't know if there is a tooth that is causing a problem but will be fixed soon enough.

Also, 140 is not a bad number; what happens to the numbers after eating? Food test can be done .... you feed and it's the start of the body using the food to make its own insulin, and you should see lower numbers in a few hours later.

My Oliver has been off insulin for over a year and he has had the odd highish number. He has megacolon, so he gets a bit bunched up and his numbers go up a bit till he has a good dump.
My Shadoe's insulin dose dropped a great deal after her dental, so I would say to wait.

You are not getting numbers in the higher range, you are still under, way under renal threshold, so get the pen to have on hand but don't start it until you have had the dental or the numbers get up into the high 200s.

I like that thought. ( the denial side of me ) it's only 13 days....
I have been following her around with lower carb foods trying ... she's halfway cooperating...
she just ate wellness chicken and herring which is 6% so I will test again in 4 hours and see. she still drops some of the time....
she does seem to take 4 hours to do the drop.

my observation when we were on the juice before was that she went up with lower/or zero carbs .... and I had found thoughts about that in the think tank.... some cats do better
with some carbs which is why I kept the friskies 8% around... plus she was always a friskies girl so it made her most likely to eat....


they did put me on a waiting list in case someone cancels a surgery before then....
oh i hope, i hope, i hope someone does....

i bought her a jenny-o's turkey leg that i'm going to see if she'll even lick it.... (hard to find turkey around here)
still wanting to get her to eat raw... or even slightly cooked homemade.
she likes fried chicken meat (only a bite or two) but walks away from boiled chicken.

Hi guys .. Well I really hope that the dental keeps shadow at the falls where she belongs .. I don't really have any advice as far as starting insulin or not, so I will just keep fingers crossed you don't need any at all .. have a great day!

Hi Rhiannon, hoping and wishing fervently with paws crossed, fingers crossed, and eyes crossed, that Shadow will stay at the Falls where she belongs.

I have a solastar pen now tucked safely in the fridge. $57 but i had no alternative but to get a vial. We are a pretty small town and i'm feeling
lucky to have had one within 30 miles...

Vet likes the idea of waiting to see if she keeps rising before starting...

also realized we'll have to postpone any more Adequan until after March 26. So glad I thought of it as the vet and I were talking about her giving
me a bottle of that.
If Shadow is feeling any tooth achiness.... that could also make her feel more achy elsewhere.

The stopping of the Adequan is because of it's blood anti-coagulation qualities..am I remembering right?

I wish you luck with the dental and with helping Shadow to quickly get back to The Falls.

Oh gees Rhiannon, I hope I hope I hope, Shadow doesn't need that juice. I certainly am not going to wish a toothache on her, but I pray it's something that can be remedied easily, and she can stay off insulin.

I hope Shadow doesn't need to go back on insulin. Hopefully the dental will take care of her rising numbers.

Yes. The adequan is postponed because of the anti-coagulation.

I hope, I hope, I hope too. That's this is her teeth, especially since it will cost a bundle. I know it always needs to be done. This will be her third dental in her almost 12 years.
The resporptive lesions tend to hit all the teeth unless you're lucky enough for it not to affect them all.
I'm guessing she has maybe half left in her mouth.... but they are all small little ones now.... all the big teeth are already pulled.
she's gonna look like one of the muppets when she yawns soon. ohmygod_smile


I did cut big chunks of meat off the turkey legs , and I cut some up really tiny and showed her. She ate the raw turkey. :o
So now if I go borrow a grinder and get all the supplements.... i'm sure she'll decide it was a one time thing. :roll:
but i'm gonna try... even tho' it's pretty icky. ( I already didn't like turkey anyway)

So now I have 13 days until her surgery to agonize about putting her thru another surgery. ( this will be number 6 :sad: )

Prayers and crossed paws much appreciated that this is what's going on...
It does seem to be the most likely thing.

Awww, poor little Shadow Muppet Face. :-| Sorry you guys are "back" (not that YOU ever left because you're cool like that!). We'll pretend it's a mini vacation to see all of Shadow's kitty friends! ...and then back to the Falls for you guys!

Sorry to hear about higher numbers, I'm hoping it's just the dental needing to be done and that you can get some sleep I-)

Sorry about Shadow's dental issue. Dont worry Rhiannon, I am sure your vet will do a great job. Let's get these solved before tackling the slightly raised bg is a good idea. If the pain & discomfort gone, Shadow might be better bg again.
