3/12 Robbie AMPS 404 ***Break open the Lantus??***

I don't know what's going on... scroll down to the orange line on his SS where we started over. Everything was beautiful, then went to he** in a handbasket. It seems that it can take 5-6 full days for a dose to show it's action with him, he doesn't food spike, and is actually spending much more time interacting with me and my DDs instead of snoozing-- but with his bgs high, he will not shut up! He's vocal anyway, but it's to the ridiculous proportions now. Jojo had thought I need to do his increases in smaller increments (like fat and skinny instead of 0.25u) so that's what I've done, but I'm getting impatient-- again!

I have 15 (yes, 15!!!!) Lantus pens in the fridge... should I try that? Right now he's on Levemir (plus the R this morning).

Help?

Carolynn,

Sorry you're having trouble... I have to ask the obvious question first, has Robbie been to the vet since his numbers changed on 3/3? The numbers were nearly perfect, then suddenly pink and yellow so I wonder if there is something medical going on. Also, is there any chance the cartridge could have gone bad?

I suppose the Lev could've gone... but it seemed awfully sudden. No vet visit-- can hardly find the time to sleep-- but that's something I will try to get figured out. I'm sure his vets would love to see him again since he was so,so sick the last time they saw him. Now he's a big fat roly-poly boy!

Maybe I'll just try the Lantus and see... at least that would rule out if the insulin went bad.

You were hovering high enough for keytones before your spike. Have you checked for keytones? If you kitty has keytones more insulin then usual is needed to rid him of it. Once gone, you can resume the regular dose. That could explain the sudden jump to the 400s. Sometimes keyones can develop even when BG are not all that high. I would rule that out first. One number doesn't mean that much but all those 300s aren't great and it could mean she has developed keytones over that time.

This is based on my daughter more then a cat. She is a type one diabetic for 19 years. I have dealt with insulin and it's effects under all kinds of circumstances.

come on Robbie, let's get back to those nice blue numbers!

I would consider replacing the insulin (whether you go to Lantus or replace with more Lev is up to you). Give that a couple of cycles and then if no change increase to 1.25 units and look into a vet visit. Something made those numbers change like that, hopefully it's just the insulin.

When in doubt. Change the insulin. Eliminate all possibilities and you will come up with the answer. If that doesn't work, trip to the vet time. Make sure there is extra water on hand to flush those sugars away.
