Blech....still being a bouncy girl over here, but she's trying to clear it. I don't know why she can spend days away from the yellow floor, then all of a sudden decides she just can't resist....sometimes she is just such a cat  ! No word yet on her pee test.

Kitties were a bit rambunctious again last night (and this morning)...hopefully this round will soon fade.

I'm off today, so I need to run errands - mainly pick up fresh juice for TrixieCat.

Have a great one, everyone!

Just when they think you have them figured out... Hope she clears it soon for you. Paws crossed that it is good news on the pee test. Enjoy running errands. Have a great day Amy!!

Good Morning, guys,

Well, Trixie-Cat came down nicely to blue, so maybe she'll get to the lagoon later. Fingers and paws crossed for good lab results.
Enjoy running around doing errands, Amy. Such fun. I may do some of that myself.

Thanks for visiting us,

Ella & Rusty

Re: 3/11 Trixie AMPS 247 +3.5 144 - Urine results

The results are in, and once again my head is kind of swimming with numbers and info. Long story short, her urine was dilute with a USG of 1.020. She had a little protein in her urine (+1), but I really don't yet know exactly what that means, even though the vetty explained it. I need to read and study stuff to really absorb it...hearing it isn't enough to make it stick with me.

Anyway, they're going to run a culture just to be sure there isn't an underlying infection. Chances are slim, but I guess we have to check it. Then we'll go from there, which probably means we'll have to re-run this whole urinalysis in a month or so.

And, of course, as a probable CKD kitty, we have to start monitoring her BP.

The vetty, who is usually very current, is pretty old-school when it comes to dealing with CKD. So, CKD and FD is a double-whammy. She said that - in the eye of the lab, at least - treating CKD trumps the diabetes, and started talking about lower protein foods. As you know, I just cannot do that. It doesn't make any logical or medical sense. She didn't seem all that familiar with the idea of feeding a lower phosphorous foods. Fortunately I've got my LL peeps and Dr Lisa's lists to help me out! Note, though, that the vet who called with the results is not the vet that we actually see when we're in the office, so hopefully our "real" vet will be a little more familiar with the approach we intend to take.

I am just SO frustrated. I know this is very manageable, but we just cannot seem to buy a break from constant, constant vetty runs. I spent so many of my days off last year taking poor Mario to the vet for BP checks and BW. And then all the visits we've already had this year, with Zen and Petey being so sick, then Petey's emergency dental. And we still have to get Frankie and Noah in for check ups and BW at some point in the next several months. This is just a horrific sense of deja vu....I'm pretty bummed.

Anyway...I'm running very late...I intended to be out picking up Trix's fresh juice hours ago, so I'd better hit it.

I don't have any advice for you cause I've not dealt with those issues before, but I can, and do!, send many hugs your way!!!

Re: 3/11 Trixie AMPS 247 +3.5 144 - Urine results

Amy seinding peaceful vines to you. Being a good bean is difficult sometimes, especially when our furbabies need so much from us. Your doing great and if I was closer I would help you anyway I could. Praying for less vetty visits and more coasting sometime soon. Keep up the good work. Your a hero to your kitties and to me. I know its hard and costly but so worth it, Just look into their eyes and they will thank you. Better days are coming, I promise. stay postitve and breath.
Trixie girl, mama bean could use a nice low blue/green surf with lots of lil head butts and purrs. A lil TLC goes a long way.

Re: 3/11 Trixie AMPS 247 +3.5 144 - Urine results

(((Amy))) I totally understand your frustration... the constant vetty trips can be a pain in the butt. My GA, Elvira, had advanced kidney failure and required a lot of vet visits. It is manageable, just have to take it a day at a time. I hope your regular vet is more amenable to your approach and better versed in current treatment.

Just an idea worth exploring... is there a way to monitor BP at home? I've read that their BP can go up at the vet due to stress, just like BG.

Sending good vibes your way.

Re: 3/11 Trixie AMPS 247 +3.5 144 - Urine results

Hi Amy, nice to see Trixie's numbers coming down. The Vet must suspect a possible UTI to run a culture or to rule it out? The good thing is that the CRD is manageable, if it is CRD. And if CRD, it's the very early stages. There's a lot of help here for you, one thing at a time. Maggie is a CRD kitty for several years and doing okay and the best as is possible. We still need to work on the B/P with our Vet/ Hang in there! Sending you comfort vines.

Re: 3/11 Trixie AMPS 247 +3.5 144 - Urine results

That's about what's going on with Zener. We started adding more water to his food and took away the high phosphorus food. Hugs to you, Amy. It's a lot to deal with. And I agree, thank goodness we have the peeps here to help out. :-D

Re: 3/11 Trixie AMPS 247 +3.5 144 - Urine results

Amy -

My Ruby is currently OTJ and was diagnosed with CRD in September. Her USG was also 1.020. We switched from Fancy Feast to Friskie's Special Diet Beef & Chicken. While its not idea PHOS-wise (I think its around 242 or something), its half of what the FF was. On her spreadsheet is a tab called "Ruby's lab tests". You can see her blood & urine results there. At the CKD diagnosis, her BUN was 33 and CREA was 2.1. The BUN seems to fluctuate, but the CREA has come down a little. USG has remained at 1.020. Her BP was normal the one time we had it checked, but I didn't get the exact number.

Basically, Ru is pretty early in as far as CRD/CRF goes but I still lost my mind when we got the diagnosis but I've mellowed a bit since then. For me, right now its important to keep her OTJ. Last night, +5 after dinner she was 75. The vet recommends the tests every 6 months, but I've been doing them every 3, so far.

Hang in there. If you can handle FD, you can handle CRD.

Re: 3/11 Trixie AMPS 247 +3.5 144 PMPS 111 - Urine results

She broke the bounce quite nicely today! Hopefully it will stay unbroken through the evening.

Thank you for the support and guidance, everyone! I so truly appreciate it.

I need to start looking at the fuds charts...I haven't had a chance just yet. I know we'll be able to manage this just fine...I'm just bummed, for both her and us beans. We really needed a little more time than this to recover from everything else that has happened in the last several months before tackling a new challenge, but there's not a thing we can do but push forward.

@Courtney - unfortunately there currently isn't an accurate way to measure her BP at home. I briefly looked into it when we were dealing with Mario's BP. The equipment is just too sensitive, too costly, and requires appropriate training. We're so spoiled that we can test BGs at home...it drives me crazy that I have to haul the cats to the vet for any other tests!

@Amy - I'll check out Ruby's SS/labs. I've fed Friskies Special Diet T&G to Trix on occasion...she gets sick of it after a meal or two, though  . But, I haven't tried other flavors. Time to re-study the charts!

Re: 3/11 Trixie AMPS 247 +3.5 144 PMPS 111 - Urine results

In the US CANNED CAT FOOD DATA chart on Tanya's site, all of the Friskies Special Diet choices I see have a 4 after the flavor. When you go to the bottom of that particular chart it says: 4 These foods are acidified, and therefore not usually appropriate for CKD cats. Please discuss with your vet before feeding them.
So, I don't know what that means. Just thought I'd make you aware of it.

Re: 3/11 Trixie AMPS 247 +3.5 144 PMPS 111 - Urine results

Thanks you so much for that info, Dyana!!! I don't know if Dr Lisa's chart says that, too, but I will definitely avoid those foods, just in case!

The Friskies SD Turkey & Giblets has even less Phos in it.

Hi again, Amy,

I'm sorry to learn of the CKD diagnosis. You are right that you don't need this right now. But I know that you will do just fine and that it will become just another routine. Did you know that Tanya's CKD website is available as a book?
http://www.felinecrf.org/ckd_the_book.htm

Often it is much easier to look up something in print form and to be able to flip back and forth easily. It could be a big time-saver.

Good luck with the foods. Ann (Tess) has put together a spreadsheet of foods geared toward the feline diabetic who also has CKD. It's a compendium of Dr. Lisa's lists with added stuff.

So sit down, put your feet up, breathe, and pour yourself a nice glass of something!

Hugs and scritches,

Ella & Rusty

((((((Amy)))))) You are facing so many challenges now, I know how overwhelming it can all be...
Be the wonderful Mom bean you have always been, & try to look at it as something that is manageable..
Look all your fur babies are here, and even though they need a lot of care, they are with you..
You are an amazing person, so loving & capable..I just know you will do the best you can for Trixie & all your babies--
I havent been around much as I was sick with that awful flu, trying to get my house together (still not home), and Brad had to rush to Texas as my DFIL was rushed to ER still is critical (DH is still there)-
Just My new normal state of insanity being!!
But i do watch from the side lines when I can..I just KNOW Trixie will be alright!!
Sending Healing Prayers to all your babies with Hugs & Love from me!!

Re: 3/11 Trixie AMPS 247 +3.5 144 PMPS 111 +2 99 - Urine res

Oh, Amy, as if you need more on your plate...
Ripley was dx with CKD shortly after her FD dx. Marje has been an amazing guide, as has Tanya's site. There are some wonderful food choices out there (low-carb + low-phosphorus).
I'm here if you need support.

Looks like Trixie's doing well ~ she's taking a nice little dip into the lagoon!

I hope the culture comes back infection-free.
Sending you hugs!

It's a good thing DH is playing volleyball late tonight...I can crash and he can take over testing duties since he'll be all wound up when he gets home anyway  !

Once again, thank you so much, everyone, for all the visits and support. Good to know about the book - you are right, Ella, that might work better for the way I process info!

Roni - it is so wonderful to see you here. I'm sorry you were so sick on top of everything else! You guys are still in my daily prayers.

Hi Amy - hang in there. I know how frustrating it all is... There are many beans here who deal with other aspects : FD, And CKD. Ann (Tess), and Ann(Maggie) come to mind, though I am sure there are others. Tess's Ann posts what she feed daily, phosphorus count and all. try not to worry . it sounds like you caught it early, and it can be managed. I'm with Ella, breathe, sit with your feet up, and have a nice relaxing evening with your furkids. Somehow that always seems to out it in perspective. Hugs to all, I will be keeping you in my thoughts.

Hi Amy, big hugs, you've had a lot to deal with. One sick kitty is too much for me! I hope that you can manage it at home without too frequent vet trips in the future.
